This paper thesis examines how the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL has influenced voting behavior within the affected community, specifically regarding candidate and policy preferences related to gun control, mental health support, and school safety. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the study incorporates surveys and interviews to capture voters' opinions and attitudes in the aftermath of the tragic event. This paper examines the application of external world moral skepticism to contemporary political discourse and decision-making processes. Drawing from epistemological traditions that question our ability to access moral truths about the external world, I argue that a pervasive form of moral skepticism has infiltrated modern political rhetoric, creating a crisis of justification for political action. Through discursive analysis of political communication across partisan divides, I demonstrate how skeptical attitudes toward external moral facts have transformed from philosophical positions to rhetorical strategies that undermine democratic deliberation. Like Joseph Stalin before him, Vladimir Putin has brought Ivan the Terrible back from oblivion and has made the memorialization of one of the country’s most infamous and brutal rulers a centerpiece of the Kremlin's contemporary propaganda toolkit. One Step Back, Two Steps Forward: How Ballistic Missile Defenses Put Us On The Path To War, Karan Kuppa-Apte

This article argues that the use of credible homeland ballistic missile defense (BMD) systems counterintuitively encourages offense dominance by undermining the deterrence by punishment behind mutually assured destruction (MAD). It contends that while BMD is a defensive technology, under conditions of MAD that defensive capability, if credible, is perceived by adversaries to signal an intention to circumvent deterrence. Fearing an attack with impunity, adversaries increase their supply of offensive weapons, pressuring defenders to improve their BMD capabilities, and an arms race thus emerges. This semester-long project examined the use of social studies trade books to thematically teach the civic contributions of three individuals who served as change agents in the United States during the late 19^th and early 20^th century. Two were African American men, Robert Smalls and Frederick Douglass, who took civic action to address racial discrimination faced by the Black community following the U.S. Civil War. The other was Ida B. Wells who challenged social inequities and injustices within her community. The 2016 Presidential Election was unprecedented in its results. The predicted winner, Hillary Clinton, ended up winning the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College count to Donald Trump. I examine voting for the winner, Donald Trump, and what factors caused people to vote for him or for another candidate. Although there are several factors that go into how people vote, I analyze demographic, geographic, and ideological predictors for why people voted the way they did. After coup events, the literature finds that economies perform worse overall. This literature has explored other factors tied to coup events, such as overall political stability and the effects of different governing types on economies. Leading up to the 2024 U.S. presidential election, concerns about electoral fairness and integrity in democratic institutions became central to public discourse. This study examines how perceptions of election fairness and integrity mediate the relationship between political ideology and voting intentions. While prior research has demonstrated the influence of political ideology and trust in electoral processes on voter behavior (Birch, 2010; Stanziani et al., 2024; Schaffner & Streb, 2002), the mediating role of these perceptions remains underexplored. Angola and Namibia, neighboring countries in southwestern Africa, share a history of colonial exploitation and rich natural resources, yet diverge sharply in their post-independence trajectories concerning gender equality. This paper employs the method of difference to investigate how Namibia emerged as a continental and global leader in advancing women’s rights, while Angola continues to face significant challenges. It argues that Namibia’s inclusive liberation movement and peaceful, UN-brokered decolonization contrast with Angola’s prolonged and violent colonial legacy under Portugal, which culminated in a devastating civil war. Prison-Based Factors and Deviant Behaviors Amongst Inmates in Selected Correctional Centers in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

Abstract The study was conducted in two correctional centers in Ilorin with a total population of 908. Data was obtained from 713 respondents. Descriptive and inferential analyses were analyzed, variables were analyzed using frequency and percentage, while hierarchical logistic regression was used to test the formulated hypotheses. On ethical consideration, consent of each inmate who participated was obtained from penitentiary institution. A selected finding revealed that verbal and physical abuses of inmates by prison officials could predict deviant behaviors among inmates. Additional findings revealed …

Using data from ANES and the Pew Research Center, I examine white evangelicals’ attitudes toward perceived out groups and political compromise. I compare their attitudes to the national average to see if evangelicals are consistently unique. I also compare white evangelical Republicans’ attitudes to those of non-evangelical Republicans to see if evangelicals stand out among Republicans as well. White evangelical Republicans feel more negatively toward outgroups and are less supportive of compromise than non-evangelical Republicans and the national average.

Fertilizer For Independent Terrorism: Social Media's Facilitation Of Radicalization, Mary Moody, Rachel Stark

Does social media play a role in the radicalization of independent terrorists? We theorize that, while neither necessary nor sufficient, social media facilitates the radicalization of independent terrorists due to its low barrier of entry, allowing individuals around the world to have access to and create echo chambers around radical ideologies, reinforcing their political identities. To test this theory, we conducted a mixed-methods analysis, running statistical tests on the PIRUS database and executing a most-different qualitative comparative design. We find that social media is more involved in independent rather than traditional terrorist radicalization, establishing the causal pathway in case studies.

Under Threat, Overwhelmed: How National Security Crises Impact Support For Right-Wing Populism, Mary Moody

How do national security crises affect support for extremist parties? Using Poland’s far-right Law and Justice (PiS) party as a case study, we argue that security threats requiring multilateral responses—such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine—erode populist support. Analyzing Polish survey data and election results, we highlight the limits of populist appeal and demonstrate how reliance on multilateral security responses limits populist appeal.

Introduction

Anti-transgender legislation has been introduced in state legislatures at exponentially increasing rates over the past five years. 85 bills were introduced in 2020, climbing rapidly to 692 in 2024. As of April 3, 2025, 830 bills have already been introduced in 2025.*

Studies show that this legislation is harmful to the LGBTQ+ community, especially transgender youth, even if bills are only introduced. This project seeks to understand the demographic factors of legislatures introducing and passing this legislation to assist advocates in electing legislators who will fight this legislation.

• Supreme Court Justices often look to the Federalist Papers when making decisions but do not always come to the same understanding.

• In Printz v. United States (1997), both the Supreme Court’s majority and dissenting opinions used Federalist No. 27 to support their arguments.

During the Arab Spring in 2011, youth became the backbone of protests and a force for democratic change. Particularly in Tunisia – the heart of the Spring– youth had a dominant role in starting protests and toppling regimes. Extant literature's mixed findings on wealth’s positive association with democratization processes suggest democracy’s support depends on public opinion and age. Building off fieldwork and interviews with students in Tunisia, my study focuses on economic development and its impact on public opinion.
