Summary Of Creative Research Grant Results: The Effects Of 15th And 16th Century Scholarship On The American Founding, Owen D. Yeates, Dr. Richard Vetterli
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The scope of my initial research proposal was quite wide, simply stating that I would study the writings of the Cambridge Platonists and Oxford Reformers and those surrounding them to discover the effects of religious thought on the concepts of virtue and liberty as transmitted from the initial Christian humanist movement in Italy to the American Founders. After reading some information gathered from Dr. Vetterli I decided to focus my research on Isaac Newton and included science and reason with religion, virtue, and liberty in the thrust of my research.

Justice George Sutherland: The Forgotten Utahn, William Lyle Stamps, Dr. Paul Edwards
Journal of Undergraduate Research
George Alexander Sutherland was the first and only Utahn to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court. Curiously, he isn’t mentioned in Utah History books. Further, his national reputation is not much brighter. While acknowledged as a “good” justice, he isn’t ranked with the greatest. Despite his many accomplishments and lasting influence, he has been forgotten (Peterson 1980, 310).

“Small Happiness” In China: The Battle To Save China’S Daughters, Jennifer H. Myers, Eric Hyer
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In an attempt to discover if attitudes toward female children are changing in China, I conducted interviews of 48 Chinese women in several areas of China and Hong Kong. My original plan included only two age-groups of women: women ages 60 and older, who were born before the Chinese Communist Revolution, and college-age women born after Deng Xiaoping’s reforms of 1978 (which included the one-child and birth-planning policies). In conducting interviews, however, I discovered that I was ignoring a crucial age-group: women of child-bearing age. Because China’s population is so large, enrollment at Chinese universities is limited; college students may …

Squandering The Future? A Utah-Colorado Comparison Of Industry Development Path Dependency, Michael Murff, Dr. John Griffin
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Escalating in the 1970s, the Intermountain West experienced a dramatic economic shift from mining and agriculture toward information technology (IT). Both Utah and Colorado took steps to attract computer and software firms in an effort to diversify and develop IT industries. At first glance Utah appears especially well prepared for technological innovation and a progressive IT market. Strong university computer science departments, two solid law schools, and a respectable business school provide ample intellectual capital for a robust Wasatch Front IT environment. But a closer look reveals that Utah firms lag behind their regional counterparts in overall growth rates, initial …

Women’S Rights: Domestic Abuse In Venezuela, Melissa Humes, Dr. Darren G. Hawkins
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The results of my research were surprising and have inspired further research and investigation in the area of how international norms of human rights are spread throughout regions. The findings to date have taken my research in a new direction as I search for understanding of how the international norms of domestic violence were transferred into political action throughout Latin America.

In Salt Lake City at the Traveler’s Aid Society Family Shelter there are many kids running around. They come in all shapes and sizes, all races and ethnic backgrounds, from all venues of life, from suburbs and slums. But they all have one thing in common – none of them have a home. They don’t consider the shelter their home, nor would they want to.
Observations On Public Interest Group Maintenance: Environmental Groups Shed Light On Success And Failure, Jeffrey Jones, Dr. Jay Goodliffe
Observations On Public Interest Group Maintenance: Environmental Groups Shed Light On Success And Failure, Jeffrey Jones, Dr. Jay Goodliffe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The massive proliferation of public interest groups in the past forty years appears to have surpassed our understanding of how these groups form, function, and maintain members. The purpose of my research is not to attempt to answer all the questions of how groups form and stay afloat, but to shed light from both a theoretical and practical perspective how public interest group leaders maintain membership and explain the demise of respective groups in their field.
Statistical Survey Of International Terrorist Activity: An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of Military Deterrence, Eric R. Jorgensen, Dr. Jay Goodliffe
Statistical Survey Of International Terrorist Activity: An Examination Of The Effectiveness Of Military Deterrence, Eric R. Jorgensen, Dr. Jay Goodliffe
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As we recently observed the one-year anniversary of the embassy bombings in Africa, thoughts turned again to our vulnerability to terrorist attacks. One year ago President Clinton vowed to “wage war on terrorism.” It was at this point that many began to question the effectiveness of military deterrence on terrorist activity. This research examined the question of effectiveness. My hypothesis has been that military strength has no measurable effect in the deterrence of terrorist activities. I proposed instead that terrorists strike powerful, industrialized, democratic countries because their attacks appear more devastating when conducted against these states.

Confronting The Past: Japan And Its Legal And Moral Responsibilities Towards Asian Comfort Women, Timothy D. Tree, Dr. Ray Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
On August 14, 1991, Kim Hak-Sun became the first Asian comfort woman to break fifty years of self-imposed silence about the horrors she and thousands of other young Asian women endured a half century ago. Four months later, two more Korean women stepped forward and told the world their stories. These three Korean septuagenarians were former “comfort women”, women drafted by the Japanese Imperial Army for military sexual slavery during World War II (1).
North Korea: Madman Or Rational Actor, Daniel Skidmore, Dr. Raymond Christiansen
North Korea: Madman Or Rational Actor, Daniel Skidmore, Dr. Raymond Christiansen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Some experts have stated that North Korea is a good example of an illogical regime, which, to a lesser or greater extent, adheres to the madman theory. The madman theory emphasizes that states will sometimes purposefully act in a random or irrational nature of violence in the hope that other nations will be afraid to deal forcefully with them. Knowing whether this commonly held belief is correct or not is an important step to solving the Korea problem.
Political Participation Of Latinos In Utah, John D. Smart
Political Participation Of Latinos In Utah, John D. Smart
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research project was to survey the political participation of Latinos in Utah. In order to conduct my research, I concentrated mainly on conducting surveys and interviews with Latino leaders and ordinary Latino citizens; I also did a great deal of library research. I participated in the Washington Seminar during Winter Semester 1994, and I was able to interview staffers for Senator Hatch, Rep. Orton, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). I was also able to speak with community and state leaders in Provo and Salt Lake City. My project has great application because Utah has more Latinos than all …

Utilizing the newly released CIA documents at the National Archives in D.C., this research project explores the ins and outs of the government’s investigations into their use of nuclear power in war. Specifically of interest are the analyses that were produced by the government regarding the probable success of using nuclear weapons to bring the Korean War to a conclusion.
Protestantism, Liberalism, And Racial Equality, Abraham Uppal
Protestantism, Liberalism, And Racial Equality, Abraham Uppal
Honors Theses
In this paper, I will examine liberalism in Protestantism. Liberals who are Protestant, Mainline Protestants, are an interesting group who are different from the conservative, Evangelical Christian crowd. I will pay special attention to racial issues like affirmative action and racism. Liberalism in Protestantism is often called the social gospel, a theology in which Protestants believe Christian teachings mandate an active role in society in which values such as freedom, equality, and love are pursued. The social gospel contrasts with the theology called individual salvation, often identified with conservative or Evangelical Christianity, in which one’s personal relationship with God is …

Origins Of The Movement And The Development Of Protest: The Birmingham Campaign, 1963, James Munro
Origins Of The Movement And The Development Of Protest: The Birmingham Campaign, 1963, James Munro
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Social movement theory in the late twentieth century has offered competing explanations for the origins and development of protest. In an attempt to explain the American Civil Rights Movement, scholars from the resource mobilization (RM) and political process theory (PPT) schools have provided somewhat mechanistic and formulaic explanations for how the black protest developed in the southern states. This study takes the emergence and development of protest in Birmingham, Alabama, culminating in the Birmingham Campaign of 1963, as a case study to examine the claims of RM and PPT. An evaluation of the Birmingham Campaign suggests the emergence of protest …

Inventing Burke: Edmund Burke And The Conservative Party, 1790-1918, Hannah Z. Sidney
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis explores the circumstances by which Edmund Burke came to be regarded as the father of Anglo-conservatism. Conventional wisdom assumes Burke was hailed as a Conservative oracle from the moment Reflections on the Revolution in France appeared. In fact, nineteenth century Conservatives considered Burke a "Whig" who had erred on most critical issues: slavery, Crown prerogative, Ireland, empire.
In the twentieth century, however, the advent of universal suffrage and the demise of the Liberal party forced Conservatives to develop an identity which might compete with Labour's mass appeal. It also shifted the locus of Conservative ire from liberalism to …
The Congo As A Case Study: The Making Of Unipolarity, Justin Tepper
The Congo As A Case Study: The Making Of Unipolarity, Justin Tepper
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The current international system has been described by some as unipolar. After World War II, the United States was able to develop and solidify a liberal international order built upon multilateralist principles but founded upon American military and economic supremacy. As a result of the orders success, it has become global. The Cold War is generally understood as the conflict between the liberal capitalistic American-led order and the Marxist-Leninist Soviet-centered bloc. To fully understand the making of unipolarity, however, scholars must shift their focus to the process of decolonization and the intra-NATO tensions that developed. This paper will use the …
The Silent Guerrillas: Under Slavery, In Peasant Politics, And Throughout The Industrial And Social Factories, Kevin Van Meter
The Silent Guerrillas: Under Slavery, In Peasant Politics, And Throughout The Industrial And Social Factories, Kevin Van Meter
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In the work that follows, I will examine what political theorist James C. Scott calls "the hidden transcripts" of social struggle, which are written between the lines of the political record through the quotidian and clandestine practices of resistance and mutual aid that are the first and last recourse of subjugated populations. By engaging with literature on contemporary and historical social movements, I will explore the emergence and brief legibility of these practices among chattel slaves in the American South, the peasantry in various settings, and in a number of other industrial and social settings in an attempt to determine …

Peacebuilding After Civil War, Caroline A. Hartzell
Political Science Faculty Publications
Book Summary: This comprehensive new Handbook explores the significance and nature of armed intrastate conflict and civil war in the modern world. Civil wars and intrastate conflict represent the principal form of organised violence since the end of World War II, and certainly in the contemporary era. These conflicts have a huge impact and drive major political change within the societies in which they occur, as well as on an international scale. The global importance of recent intrastate and regional conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia, Nepal, Cote d'Ivoire, Syria and Libya – amongst others – has served to refocus …
Dollar Democracy: The Politics Of Dollarization In Latin America, Cori Madrid
Dollar Democracy: The Politics Of Dollarization In Latin America, Cori Madrid
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The state's right to print money and control monetary policy is among its most powerful abilities: it allows the state to manage the economy, raise revenue, and reward political allies. Since the establishment of the Westphalian state system, the state's monopoly of money within its borders has been a source of wealth and within the last century, influence over the macroeconomy and local actors. Nevertheless, in the year 2000, Ecuador and El Salvador surprised the world by announcing that they would officially dollarize their economies, replacing their national currencies with the dollar. What can explain why countries, such as Ecuador …

Not By Accident: How Egyptian Civil Society Successfully Launched A Revolution, Helen-Margaret Nasser
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the role of civil society in Egypt and argues that it was central to the success of the 2011 revolution that ended in the ouster of President Hosni Mubarak. I will discuss the development of civil society under Mubarak and demonstrate its strength. In understanding civil society in Egypt, this thesis will discuss the strengths of groups such as associations, Islamist movements, women's groups, labor activism, and youth movements. I also demonstrate that it is important to understand the precedents established that shaped the state's stance towards civil society. As such, this thesis will also discuss the …

Sanctions Under The Eu's Generalised System Of Preferences (Gsp): Coherence By Accident?, Clara Portela, Jan Orbie
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article investigates the relationship between the European Union's withdrawal of trade benefits for developing countries under the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) and its sanctions under the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP). Our expectation is that GSP withdrawals and CFSP sanctions will not cohere. However, our research reveals that GSP suspension has been coherent with CFSP sanctions when the latter exist prior to the decision-making process on GSP sanctions and when the International Labour Organisation has set up a Commission of Inquiry condemning the country, as with Myanmar/Burma and Belarus. The presence of separate institutional frameworks explains the …
Diaspora As Development Actors: A Source Of Human And Social Capital For Local Development In Turkey, Meryem Senay Ataselim
Diaspora As Development Actors: A Source Of Human And Social Capital For Local Development In Turkey, Meryem Senay Ataselim
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation provides an analysis of Turkish-American diaspora philanthropy - done through social and human capital transfers - and its role in impacting local development in Turkey. The study offers the consideration of a new kind of diaspora philanthropy, namely innovative philanthropy, which channels ideas, skills and experiences that have the potential to impact social change in local communities through social and human capital transfers.
The dissertation presents and analyzes two cases that have been supported by the Turkish-American diaspora. Case studies show that even though diaspora philanthropy towards Turkey is still relatively new and small in financial terms, there …
For Right And Might: The Militarization Of The Cold War And The Remaking Of American Democracy, Michael Brenes
For Right And Might: The Militarization Of The Cold War And The Remaking Of American Democracy, Michael Brenes
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation examines how Cold War defense spending shaped the evolution of American political culture and public policy from the 1940s until the 1990s. It argues that the Cold War economy contributed to the realignment of American politics in the postwar era. The fight against global communism abroad altered the structure, purpose, and public perception of the federal government following World War II, but also subsidized corporations, suburban communities, and individuals affected by defense spending. The militarization of the Cold War therefore created various dependents of America's military and defense apparatus that continuously pressed for more defense spending during the …
Leaders, Ideas, National Interests, And Economic Strategies: Explaining The Regional Integration Decisions Of Mexico And Brazil, Roberto Genoves
Leaders, Ideas, National Interests, And Economic Strategies: Explaining The Regional Integration Decisions Of Mexico And Brazil, Roberto Genoves
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Regional integration agreements (RIAs) facilitate economic integration by allowing member countries access to each other's markets and by removing or reducing trade and investment barriers. Their increasing influence on international patterns of trade and investment flows has stimulated substantial academic work. Yet, scholars note that we lack an adequate comprehension of the factors that cause governments to seek RIAs, and why they prefer a particular type of integration arrangement. These are important questions because they speak to the forces that shape cooperation among states, a vital issue in international relations with implications for global governance.
Using an eclectic analytical approach, …
