There has been a recent global shift away from democracy and towards authoritarian forms of government. Much attention has been given to analyses of the social and economic trends that feed this decline in democracy, with further attention paid to the missteps of the global powers as they navigate shifting economic dominance and populist movements worldwide. My research arose from questioning whether certain factors might exist that are reliably predictive of democratic support or political participation and can be affected through nongovernmental avenues. North Korea’s drastic shift in foreign policy in 2018 focused the world’s attention on Kim Jong-un. This thesis examines the intention of Kim Jong-un, who plans to make North Korea a socialist economic powerhouse; it also analyzes the changes in his foreign policy decisions. This analysis is based on literature reviews and external statistical data suitable for North Korean studies. Thisarticle examines the newspaper Silangan, published in Winnipeg, Canada, from February 1977 to July 1982, to analyze the negotiation of Filipino identity in the diaspora. Over its six-year run, the columns in this newspaper dealt with issues of cultural maintenance, the importance of Filipino heritage, and political engagement in their adoptive homeland. A critical dialogue argued in support of certain aspects of life from the Philippines, such as extravagant pageantry and corrupt political practices. Statutes governing preservation of presidential records must be adapted to accommodate presidents’ evolving use of social media accounts. The Freedom of Information Act is meant to promote government transparency, and subjects governmental agencies to information requests from members of the public. However, as it relates to social media records, the problem is one of volume; are the means of preservation currently in place able to adequately address the vast amount of records created by a President’s use of social media? Several researchers have developed a framework for analyzing the impact that droughts have on a location, with some insight into the impact of this occurrence on the tourism industry specifically. Through an analysis of resources from the State Departments of Education and state education codes, I argue that levels of state regulation of charter schools differ in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and New York. Specifically, I demonstrate that this regulation can be classified as low, moderate, or high, depending on the language of the state’s educational legislation. I also analyze the racial diversity of each state’s charter school and public school sectors, using race as a proxy for income levels. This data is used to assess the educational outcomes of the different sectors. It is evident that charter schools are …

In this research, we address a longstanding question concerning how individuals evaluate social and political issues. We focus on the role that political self-identification plays when individuals evaluate policy statements. In a laboratory setting, participants completed a task facilitation procedure, in which they made paired sets of judgments about a series of policy statements. Relative to a control task, ideological categorization of policy statements as liberal or conservative influenced the ease of evaluation. On experimental trials that began with ideological categorization, policy evaluations that were consistent with the participant’s own ideology were made more quickly than responses that were ideologically …

Many of the studies about minority voting are from the 1990s, and they effectively say neither representation nor redistricting affect turnout for African Americans. We hypothesized that making people politically aware is more likely to get them to vote rather than directly telling people to vote. There were 117 participants in this study, with ages ranging from seventeen to thirty-six. These groups were split into two populations: “Aware” and “Unaware”. Only 10% of the Unaware population voted because they were told to vote but the informed participants (Aware) were 71% more likely to vote (p<.01).

Apartheid South Africa represented a paradox as a US ally and human rights pariah. “Genocide Masquerading” uncovers the implications of US foreign policy on the rise and decline of apartheid, looking specifically at the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre and the 1976 Soweto Uprising. By comparing Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy, Ford, and Carter foreign policy responses, this thesis creates a comparative analysis of how effective, or ineffective, the United States was during pivotal moments in apartheid history. This thesis will not only expand on the developing South African literature but add to the conversation of international aid, diplomacy practices, and North-South relationships.

This thesis attempted to create a better understanding of how the transition from Islamic and right-wing radicalization to violent terrorism occurs in Western countries. The hypothesis that was tested was that the greater level of radical actions an individual takes part in based on their extreme views, the greater likelihood that they will participate or attempt to participate in violent terrorism.
