กองทัพเมียนมา หรือตัตมะด่อ (Tatmadaw) เป็นตัวแสดงหลักที่ก่อให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจของเมียนมา วิทยานิพนธ์นี้มุ่งวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองภายใต้อำนาจของกองทัพเมียนมากับการขยายธุรกิจของกองทัพเมียนมานับตั้งแต่ได้รับเอกราชจากอังกฤษจนถึงปัจจุบัน โดยต้องการพิจารณาว่าการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองที่เกิดขึ้นในแต่ละช่วงเวลาสำคัญส่งผลต่อผลประโยชน์ทางธุรกิจของกองทัพอย่างไร และในทางกลับกัน อำนาจทางเศรษฐกิจนี้ส่งผลต่อการรักษาและขยายอำนาจทางการเมืองของกองทัพเมียนมาอย่างไร การศึกษานี้วิเคราะห์ผ่านกรอบแนวคิดว่าด้วยความสัมพันธ์ระหว่าง ‘รูปแบบของความสัมพันธ์พลเรือน-ทหาร’ กับ ‘ระดับการควบคุมของทหารต่อธุรกิจกองทัพ’ ของ Ayesha Siddiqa ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ‘อำนาจทางการเมือง’ กับ ‘อำนาจทางเศรษฐกิจ’ ของกองทัพเมียนมาเป็นเงื่อนไขเกื้อหนุนซึ่งกันและกัน กองทัพเมียนมาได้อาศัยอำนาจทางการเมืองเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกแก่การสร้างและดำเนินธุรกิจของตนเอง ธุรกิจของกองทัพสามารถปรับตัวและยืดหยุ่นต่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมืองที่เกิดขึ้น และขยายตัวมากขึ้นออกไปครอบคลุมธุรกิจทุกประเภท ทั้งในรูปของเครือบริษัทที่ดำเนินการโดยกระทรวงกลาโหม อย่างเครือบริษัท UMEHL และเครือบริษัท MEC, ธุรกิจที่ดำเนินการโดยหน่วยงานย่อยต่างๆ ในกระทรวงกลาโหม, ธุรกิจของหน่วยทหารในระดับภูมิภาค รวมถึงเอื้อให้เกิดระบบ ทุนนิยมแบบเครือญาติ (Nepo-capitalism) และระบบทุนนิยมแบบเครือข่ายบริวาร (Crony capitalism) ในทางกลับกัน กองทัพเมียนมาก็ใช้อำนาจทางเศรษฐกิจที่ตนเองครอบครองเพื่อรักษาและขยายอำนาจทางการเมืองของตนเองให้เข้มแข็งมากขึ้นกว่าเดิม อันจะเป็นหลักประกันว่าตนเองจะสามารถควบคุมธุรกิจให้เป็นไปตามเงื่อนไขที่พึงพอใจได้ กองทัพจึงดำเนินการเสริมสร้างศักยภาพทางการทหาร, สะสมความมั่งคั่งในหมู่ผู้นำทหาร, สนับสนุนสวัสดิการเพื่อสร้างความจงรักภักดีในเหล่าเจ้าหน้าที่ทหาร และทหารเกษียณอายุ, ก่อตั้งมวลชนจัดตั้ง และให้การสนับสนุนขบวนการชาตินิยมที่ฝักใฝ่กองทัพ ตลอดจนเปิดโอกาสให้พลเรือนเข้ามาประกอบอาชีพในธุรกิจของกองทัพ เพื่อขยายความนิยมทางการเมืองของตนเองออกไปสู่ภาคพลเรือนในช่วงการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางการเมือง การศึกษายังพบว่า อำนาจทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจของกองทัพเมียนมาที่ปราศจากการควบคุมและตรวจสอบจากรัฐบาลหรือหน่วยงานใดๆ เป็นอุปสรรคสำคัญที่บ่อนเซาะการเปลี่ยนผ่านไปสู่ประชาธิปไตยของเมียนมา ให้กลายเป็นเพียงการเปลี่ยนผ่านไปสู่ระบอบประชาธิปไตยภายใต้กองทัพผู้พิทักษ์ระบอบเดิมเท่านั้น

This dissertation concerns how Jewish-Muslim and Israel-Palestine grassroots activism can persist in the face of threats to the safety, freedom, lives, or even simply the income and employment of those engaged in acts of sustained resistance. At the heart of the study are the experiences of participants in the Hashlamah Project, an inter-religious collaboration project, involving Jews and Muslims. Across chapters and even nations, chapters of this organization faced similar threats and found universally-applicable solutions emerging for confronting those threats and persisting in the face of them. Whilst the CIA have been using psychometric profiling for decades, Cambridge Analytica showed that people's psychological characteristics can be accurately predicted from their digital footprints, such as their Facebook or Twitter accounts. To exploit this form of psychological assessment from digital footprints, we propose machine learning methods for assessing political personality from Twitter. We have extracted the tweet content of Prime Minster Boris Johnson’s Twitter account and built three predictive personality models based on his Twitter political content. We use a Multi-Layer Perceptron Neural network, a Naive Bayes multinomial model and a Support Machine Vector model to predict the OCEAN …

For seventy years, Puerto Ricans have been bitterly divided over how to decolonize the island, a U.S. territory. Many favor Puerto Rico’s admission into statehood. But many others support a different kind of relationship with the United States: they believe that in 1952, Puerto Rico entered into a “compact” with the United States that transformed it from a territory into a “commonwealth,” and they insist that “commonwealth” status made Puerto Rico a separate sovereign in permanent union with the United States. A gratifying feature of recent scholarship on administrative power is the resurgence of interest in the Founding. Even the defenders of administrative power hark back to the Constitution’s early history – most frequently to justify delegations of legislative power. But the past offers cold comfort for such delegation.

A case in point is Delegation at the Founding by Professors Julian Davis Mortenson and Nicholas Bagley. Not content to defend the Supreme Court’s current nondelegation doctrine, the article employs history to challenge the doctrine – arguing that the Constitution does not limit Congress’s delegation of legislative power. During the three years leading up to this year ’s 60th anniversary of the signing of the 1960 U.S.-Japan Security Treaty, a series of workshops were held under the joint sponsorship of Columbia Law School’s Center for Japanese Legal Studies and the National Defense Academy of Japan’s Center for Global Security. Bringing together experts in international law and political science primarily from the United States and Japan, the workshops examined how differing approaches to use of force and understandings of individual and collective self-defense in the two countries might adversely affect their alliance.

The Influence Of The Government On Corporate Environmental Reporting In China: An Authoritarian Capitalism Perspective, Hui Situ, Carol Tilt, Pi-Shen Seet

This study uses panel data to investigate the different roles of the Chinese government in influencing companies’ decision making about corporate environmental reporting (CER) via a two-stage process. The results show that the Chinese government appears to mainly influence the decision whether to disclose or not, but has limited influence on how much firms disclose. The results also show that the traditional model of authoritarian capitalism (under which state-owned enterprises [SOEs] are the major governance arrangement) is transforming into a new model. In the new model of authoritarian capitalism, the Chinese government uses newer, more sophisticated tools to manage both …

Examines the “counter-” move in Balibar’s thought, analysing it not in the Kantian or Hegelian sense of a synthesis that resolves an antinomic opposition (not the least of which, because the particle “contre-” functions differently than the particle “anti-”), but rather as an original counterpoint that itself becomes so powerful as to liberate itself from the oppositional relationship and transform itself into a free-standing concept, intervention, or even mode of governmentality. This dissertation asks: how does intimate labour interact with the mobility and political subjectivities of Haitian migrant women and women of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic (DR)? It answers this question in three specific ways. First, it explains the relationship between intimate labour and the spatial trajectories of women of Haitian ancestry who work as domestic workers. Second, it examines how the interaction between intimate labour and human mobility plays out in the Dominican border regime. Third, it explains how these subaltern women act politically in the midst of the intersections between borders, mobilities, and intimacy.

Esta contribución pretende ser una tentativa de análisis crítico y geográfico del trabajo del caricaturista venezolano Eneko de Las Heras Leizaola. En este artículo proponemos un análisis espacial y cronológico de sus dibujos de humor gráfico y de denuncia social publicados en los periódicos Interviú y 20 Minutos entre los años de 2007 a 2018. El sustento de dicho análisis reside en el empleo de herramientas digitales. Demostraremos cómo Eneko representa, incluso si hay algunas críticas sociales en respuesta a fenómenos económicos, políticos y bélicos, nuevas formas de contar cuestiones sociales como el sexismo o la ecología.

System-involvement resulting from anti-trafficking interventions and the criminalization of sex work and migration results in negative health impacts on sex workers, migrants, and people with trafficking experiences. Due to their stigmatized status, sex workers and people with trafficking experiences often struggle to access affordable, unbiased, and supportive health care. This paper will use thematic analysis of qualitative data from in-depth interviews and ethnographic fieldwork with 50 migrant sex workers and trafficked persons, as well as 20 key informants from legal and social services, in New York and Los Angeles. The purpose of this research is to discover why some individuals abstain from voting in America. Using this information, countries may be able to increase voter turnout amongst their population. Literature provided several theories as to why individuals abstain from voting. This research focused on the impact of: age, education, and confidence in the courts system. A regression was conducted using GSS 1998 survey data to observe the impact of these three variables on voter turnout. It was found in this model that age and education have a statistically significant impact on voter turnout, but confidence in the court system …

This study examines the applicability of Michael Lipsky’s (1980) concept of “street-level bureaucracy” to the profession of social work in 2019. Street-level bureaucrats are public service workers “who interact with citizens in the regular course of their jobs; have significant independence in decision making, and potentially have extensive impact on the lives of their citizens” (Lipsky, 1980:3). They are faced with uncertainties in their work related to inadequate resources, unclear policies, and caseloads/workloads that defy what may be possible to achieve by any one worker. Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal

Studies of the onset of genocide and accompanying early warning and forecasting efforts have focused almost exclusively on states. This article suggests that genocide prediction must move beyond a purely state-centric approach. Specifically, I suggest three major avenues that will refine and complement existing research and related prediction efforts. These include 1) theorizing and analyzing non-state actors who commit genocide, 2) engaging in conflict-centered approaches, and 3) addressing the onset and triggers of genocide within subnational spaces. I conclude with a discussion of how these three avenues can be pursued simultaneously to inform more robust genocide prevention endeavors.
