The Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-COC) serves as the regional accrediting body for postsecondary academic institutions in the southeastern United States. Regionally accredited institutions generally recognize course work, academic programs, and transfer credits from other similarly accredited colleges and universities. Beginning with its inception as the first branch campus of the University of South Florida (USF) in July 1965, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg’s academic programs received full recognition under the umbrella of the colleges and academic divisions of the USF Tampa campus. Dr. Lowell E. Davis served as dean during an important phase of USF St. Petersburg's history. He arrived in August 1986 and promptly set into motion an agenda that supported the expansion of course offerings and academic majors at USF St. Petersburg. Davis took a strong position in advocating greater autonomy and independence for the growing campus at a time when many Tampa-based administrators hoped to limit curricular initiatives at the University's "branch" campuses. His untimely death in the fall of 1989 slowed the process but did not extinguish the dreams of greater autonomy. Subsequent administrators at USF St. Petersburg …

We live in an increasingly digital world. Preparing for this conference I composed my paper in word-processing software, e-mailed the draft to my co-presenters, selected digital images and screenshots for our presentation, and announced my travel plans on the library staff blog. Cultural materials are also riding the wave to go digital and oral histories provide intimate pathways into the stories of our world. Many institutions are feeling pressure to embark on digitization projects to provide greater access and visibility to their unique materials. Digitization initiatives have numerous benefits, but they can also drain staff time and resources if they are not planned and prioritized well. As new librarians are hired into increasingly technical entry-level positions, they are often expected to contribute to or lead digitization projects requiring a diverse skill set. I Wonder Who's Using Us Now: Hurricane Katrina's Influence On Use Of Special Collections At The University Of New Orleans Library, Florence M. Jumonville Ph.D.

Hurricane Katrina (August 29, 2005) necessitated the temporary closure of the University of New Orleans, including its Earl K. Long Library. When the university reopened with a smaller student body, librarians in the Louisiana and Special Collections Department observed that patterns of research use of the collections had changed. This article analyzes data gathered during eight six-month periods (2003-2007) to compare the number of research queries, the institutional affiliations of the researchers, and the collections that were requested before and after the storm.
