This poster highlights the Nevada Test Site Oral History Project (NTSOHP); a digitization collaboration dedicated to documenting, preserving, and disseminating the stories of persons affiliated with and impacted by forty years of U.S. Cold War nuclear weapons testing.

The project is a partnership between the UNLV University Libraries, the director of the NTSOHP, campus, and community partners to create an online, fully searchable, digital re-search collection from the collected oral history research. Project participants include scientists, miners, military officers, contractors and corporate executives. Ms. Susan B. Donoff, a graduate student in history at the University of South Florida, investigated the horrific 25 March 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. As part of her research, she sought to examine how the fire transformed the labor movement and how notable leaders of the time—especially Frances Perkins and members of Tammany Hall— assumed important roles in promoting progressive reforms. Perkins, who later served as the first female cabinet member when she began her tenure as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s Secretary of Labor, championed the plight of those who perished in the …

How To Get More “Product” While Doing Less “Process”, Janet Hauck

Mark Greene and Dennis Meissner’s landmark “More Product, Less Process” method (MPLP) applies the least number of necessary processing steps when readying an unprocessed collection for use by researchers. If the number of steps for arrangement, preservation, and description are reduced, the application will naturally reduce the amount of processing time. Using their "middle way" of ensuring that at least half of the processing steps were done “adequately” rather than traditionally, Whitworth Archives was able to process a significant number of collections for preservation and use.

Historically archives and museums have sought out collections to keep in their institution. Many members of the community are not ready to donate their cherished family heirlooms to a museum or archive. The East Texas Research Center (ETRC) at Ralph W. Steen Library views collecting material in a different light. They are helping to preserve and disseminate Texas cultural heritage through the promotion of preservation of Community Collections. ETRC temporarily borrows material from the community or members of the community bring their historic material to be digitized and added to the TIDES database.

A member of the USF faculty since 1980, Raymond O. Arsenault specializes in the social, political, and environmental history and historiography of the American South, though his teaching and research interests cover nearly all areas of American history, culture, and civilization. He serves as the John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History. In the summer of 1998, Arsenault donated some of his research files and miscellaneous materials to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library. In 2001, 2004, and 2008, he sent additional materials for preservation as part of this collection. This guide includes accessions through the spring of 2008.

Discuss the work of the project and the importance of documenting, preserving and

making public the diverse and dissenting stories of Cold War nuclear testing in Nevada. It is the goal of the project that people directly involved with the issues on the ground as well as those who know little about the test site, its impacts and importance, will benefit from using the project materials. This presentation will provide information about the archive contents and how to access them.

A Digital Archive Of Historical Railroad Property Valuation Maps, Dean Chauvin

UCCGIA PAPERS AND PROCEEDINGS

This paper describes the creation of a digital archive of railroad property valuation maps created for a railway line operated by the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Company. The original maps were created by the railroad company in 1915 for the Interstate Commerce Commission. The Commission took data on railroad property into account in calculating passenger and freight rates. Property title schedules for parcels along the railway are provided with the maps.
