Digital Repository Adoption In New York City Research Institutions, David J. Williams
Student Theses
As more scholarly and research materials are created in digital formats, institutions charged with managing, preserving, and disseminating these materials are increasingly adopting specialized software tools and environments created to fulfill these functions. Concurrently, subscriptions to serials databases provided by academic publishers are increasingly prohibitive and problematic. This paper surveys the adoption of digital institutional repositories by research institutions in the New York City region as of the Spring of 2009, and concludes that in spite of their potential advantages these systems are still not widely applied toward addressing the issues of preservation and access to their fullest potential.

Working Together: A Literature Review Of Campus Information Technology Partnerships, Eleta Exline

This article reviews the recent literature about the essential but often uneasy alliances made between content experts (archivists and librarians) and technology experts. Differing professional cultures, misunderstandings of one another, limited abilities to envision change, and lack of support from top-level administrators are the most often cited reasons for the persistent difficulty in working together. Failure to collaborate may result in the marginalization or exclusion of content experts from projects where their professional skills are most needed. In spite of these problems, successful models for working together do exist. True collaborations are mutually beneficial, open opportunities for continuing relationships, and …

As the Kentucky representative in the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), the University of Kentucky Libraries Preservation and Digital Programs (UKPDP) team has worked extensively with historic newspaper digitization from microfilm over the last four years, using both an in-house production methodology and vendor resources. With more than 50 years experience with microfilming newspapers added to that, UKPDP is well versed with issues related to historic newspapers on microfilm. Many academic libraries have invested time and resources into the creation of library digitization programs, and at this point in time there is a growing need to evaluate the impact and success of these efforts. What factors determine whether institutions achieve goals and experience long-term success or face challenges in staffing, funding, and strategic vision?
