Conservation recasing is a way to preserve our 19th and 20th century materials in which the bindings have failed and, in many cases, been lost over time. It is not intended to be used on valuable bindings or volumes printed before 1800. The structure used is based on the German (Bradel) case binding.

The molded paper spine is a rebacking/recasing structure intended for leather-bound books for which the covers have deteriorated too much to be salvageable. The new molded paper spine looks very much like leather and is very strong.

In the past, systems that present digitized archival materials were often created with limited knowledge of their audiences’ needs and greater focus on the materials. Organizations must ask whether digital delivery systems are sufficiently effective to merit financial support. As part of the planning process for a digital delivery system at the Orbis Cascade Alliance, the Northwest Digital Archives (NWDA) consortium conducted a study of its core researchers’ needs for the selection and presentation of archival materials online. With the assistance of NWDA members, 19 subjects were recruited for hour-long interviews. Although the number of subjects meant that the conclusions …

The Moise D. Levy, MD papers is limited to selected papers that were donated by Dr. Levy's daughter Justine (Levy) Bennett to the Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library in 1982, including a selection of letters, original copies of two articles, one on the treatment of Bubonic Plague in Galveston, TX circa 1920, one on the use of Tartar Emetic as a cure for Malaria circa 1917, and a plaque from 1957 that commemorates Dr. Levy's time as president of the Harris County Medical Society. With digital recording devices readily available to most people, events are documented and shared on-line in real time by the “person on the street.” The ease of creation and dissemination belies what archivists know will be the long-term challenges of organizing and preserving collections of born-digital information. While other processes require little modification, the inherent fragility of digital content and the ease of depositing files call for a substantial modification of established procedures. Archives are a frequently untapped resource for novelists. Accounts of daily life, the lives of individuals, details of specific eras, and other minutiae found in the documents and memorabilia housed in archives can be used to fill out the essential scenes and events of the stories. Such facts and personal details help fiction writers make their stories real to readers and keep misconceptions and factual errors out. This study looks at the limited literature on the subject of authors in archives and presents examples of the types of information housed in particular archives to illustrate the kinds of details that …
