Listening To Ghosts In The Appalachian Mountains: The Western North Carolina Tomorrow's Black Oral History Project As A Community Archive, Elizabeth Harper

This case study invites archivists to broaden our understanding of what constitutes a community archive using the Western North Carolina Tomorrow Black Oral History Project as its focus. The oral history project captured the experiences of Black elders in Western North Carolina in the 1980s and provides a unique insight into a Black community in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The leaders and participants wanted this project to increase Black representation in Appalachian history and intended the materials be distributed widely. Five dental collections have been processed and are now available for research at the McGovern Historical Center collection search site.

These collections were processed by Arthur Fowler, while interning at the McGovern Historical Center this summer. These collections are almost 12 cubic feet of material. Materials included books, scrapbooks, papers, ephemera, plaques, and personal items belonging to dental professionals spanning 110 years from 1902 to 2012.

Creating resources that facilitate the preservation of community-based archives and ecological knowledge in the Louisiana coastal region is integral to its survival amongst the effects of climate change. Research and records created and stored within the Louisiana coastal region have a higher predisposition to the drastic and pervasive effects of climate change and natural disasters. Archival donations are often triggered by critical transitions in donors' lives, like the end of a career, the selling of a family home, or the death of a loved one. Because donors approach archives during these transitions, archivists often find themselves in the middle of emotionally charged relationships with donors working through feelings of grief and loss. However, archivists are often unprepared and untrained for this emotionally demanding labor. A literature review reveals that while this is a common experience among archivists, there is very little guidance on how to approach this aspect of donor relations. Other fields that provide …

The rapidly changing face of the UNH system, retirements spurred by COVID, and a challenging financial environment motivated SCA to restructure the ways that they collect and preserve institutional history. This paper reports on a qualitative study that aimed to discover faculty and graduate students’ reaction to journal cancellation projects. In most studies that examine cancellation projects the main aim is to delineate methods used in making decisions about cancellations and the process followed to achieve a successful outcome. Our study looked at these factors but also interviewed faculty to get their response to the cancellations that had occurred at their university and to discover whether there was an alignment between the different ways in which librarians and faculty evaluated journals. However, statistical data show a significant decline in student visits between September and December 2023. This phenomenon raises questions about the factors influencing users' experiences, particularly their perceptions of the library's interior design, which should ideally enhance comfort and increase visitation. This research is essential to understand how interior design affects user perception and visit rates, and to provide recommendations for improvements that could boost the library's appeal among students. This study aims to identify and analyze the marketing strategies implemented by the Trisakti School of Management (TSM) Library to enhance service quality and user satisfaction. Utilizing a qualitative approach with a case study method, the research offers in-depth insights through field observations, interviews with library staff, and document analysis. The findings reveal that TSM Library excels in high-quality imported book collections, comprehensive digital resources, and strategically located services. However, challenges include limited reading space and restricted operating hours. This study examines motivations for adopting the Protocols for Native American Archival Materials (PNAAM), the factors that might impact implementation of PNAAM in practice, and an exploration of how and why new ethical standards are accepted or rejected. The researcher conducted a survey in 2023 of archivists and/or memory workers working at non-Tribal institutions that have some materials about Indigenous people. The study was designed around the respondent’s perceptions of authority, skills, knowledge, relationships, and resources both as individuals and within their repositories. The paper will highlight ongoing work at three cultural heritage institutions in northern Ohio (Bowling Green State University, Kent State University, and the Lakeside Heritage Society) to extend the work begun during grant-funded digital projects beyond the term of a grant. Sustaining related work after the grant funding period has expired is a concern for many practitioners and to date, is a topic that has not been discussed in-depth in the literature. Bringing Servicewomen Into Focus: Exploring Methods For Indexing Second World War Archival Photographs At Library And Archives Canada, Rebecca Murray

The Second World War saw women officially serving in the Canadian military in capacities other than nursing, breaking into roles historically held by men. The service of over fifty thousand Canadian women is documented in photographs held at Library and Archives Canada; photographs that allow historians to widen the lens on the traditional narrative, but only if they can find them. This article presents two methods for indexing archival photographs and highlights the particular challenges of identifying servicewomen in the archival record and bringing our aunties and grandmas into focus.

Organizational change is challenging. At the heart of this challenge is an attachment to the status quo. Both employees and managers tend to prefer the status quo because it is known and, unless shown otherwise, enables them to successfully accomplish their responsibilities. They often use tradition as a way to maintain the status quo. This case study provides an example of organizational change in the Brigham Young University (BYU) Library and discusses how tradition was used to both promote and resist change.
