A Genealogy Of The Lesbian Herstory Archives, 1974-2014, Rachel F. Corbman

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

This paper traces the collection development of the Lesbian Herstory Archives, a community based repository founded in 1974. I argue that the collection grew organically as a reflection of a dialogue between an evolving cohort of volunteer archivists and a community of donors. Primarily focusing on the first five years, this paper pinpoints key early decisions made by volunteer archivists. Specifically, I examine the Archives’ early collecting priorities and the introduction of the special collections in 1978. These decisions, I argue, laid the foundation for the Lesbian Herstory Archives and continue to shape it today, forty years later.

Many of the images in this collection once appeared in the “Negro” news section of the St. Petersburg Times. At some point in time, they were acquired by the Neighborhood News Bureau, a partnership of USFSP and other entities that documents events in and shares news of Midtown, an area of southern St. Petersburg with a substantial African American population. In January 2014, Dr. Deni Elliott, Chair of Journalism and Media Studies at USFSP and the Eleanor Poynter Jamison Chair of Media Ethics and Press Policy, transferred this collection from the Neighborhood News Bureau offices to the Poynter Library to …

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Like many cultural heritage institutions, the Archives and Special Collections at the University of Louisville faces the dichotomy of material abundance and budgetary scarcity. Driven by the desire to make historical primary sources accessible online, this organization harnessed the power of the public to transcribe the Louisville Leader, an historic African American newspaper. The first sections of this article define crowdsourcing and describe how it was implemented at the University of Louisville, including the tools adopted and the process used. The latter sections outline the marketing strategy, the public response, and lessons learned from this ongoing project.

With the advancement of open access (OA) journal publishing opportunities in partnership with presses and faculty, libraries in alignment with intersecting academic values are fulfilling a need by supporting sustainable models of scholarly communication that incorporate disseminating faculty scholarship in collaboration with library and/or press staff and editors to “start up” an OA journal or transform an existing print journal to OA. Library staff that embrace faculty or student publishing partnerships are structuring and utilizing their scholarly communication skill sets by positioning the availability of open access publications to disseminate quality research results. Institutional repositories (IRs) host an abundance of unique and valued digital content. The premise of garnering scholarly and local collection materials is to engage them for visibility and accessibility. As an additional tool to assist in the process of creating an infrastructure for reachable content, the WorldCat Digital Collection Gateway tool enables academic libraries to target individual repository collections to minimally harvest the metadata and be visible through WorldCat.org and OAIster. In a time where websites are ever changing, what metadata standards and tools are best for ensuring that web archive objects (such as snapshots of websites) are readable for users of the future? Can the evolution of web interfaces be documented? Initiatives that explore these questions already exist such as the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine (which stores source code from websites along with images); however, other archive building solutions are also available but have yet to be explored.
