The Role Of National Archives In The Creation Of National Master Narratives In Southeast Asia, Michael Karabinos

This paper is a working paper for a research project in its initial stage. Using an article by German historian Stefan Berger on the role of national archives in the creation of master historical narratives in Europe as its inspiration, I look at the same concept for postcolonial Southeast Asia. Particular attention is paid to Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia. Due to the colonial past of these countries, what is held in their national archives includes many records created by the former colonial administrations. This case study describes a recent exhibit of archival photographs at the University of Dayton and how it was used as a teaching tool in an undergraduate course. The exhibit, Faith, Reason, and One-Hour Processing, showcased archival photographs from the Marian Library, a special library on campus devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary. This article outlines how the project was developed in conjunction with a campus-wide theme, Faith and Reason, and used as a teaching tool in an interdisciplinary undergraduate course, Development of Western Culture in a Global Context (ASI 120). Long-term monitoring and research projects are essential to understand ecological change and the effectiveness of management activities. An inherent characteristic of long-term projects is the need for consistent data collection over time, requiring rigorous attention to data management and quality assurance. Recent papers have provided broad recommendations for data management; however, practitioners need more detailed guidance and examples. We present general yet detailed guidance for the development of comprehensive, concise, and effective data management for monitoring projects. What’S Your Source?: The Dilemma Of Scanning Negatives Vs. Prints To Represent Images In Photography Collections, Kevin C. Miller

Recently, Pepperdine University Libraries initiated the digitization and curatorial arrangement of a large collection of negatives and prints donated by the widow of Hanson A. Williams, Jr., one of our alumni. Williams had been a photographer by trade and, after his death, his wife donated 13.86 linear feet of photographic images depicting his life at college and immediately afterwards in the Korean War. After processing the collection, we realized that we had a copious number of Williams’ original negatives in addition to multiple iterations (in some cases) of prints that he had made from these negatives. Forging Connections And Building Collections: The Mass. Memories Road Show At Umass Boston, Jessica R. Holden

In this presentation, I explored three aspects of the Mass. Memories Road Show: the public event, the digital collection, and the archival record of Massachusetts communities. I discussed bringing archival resources out into communities (rather than vice versa), and thus reaching new audiences, as well as building new partnerships within those communities.

The Mass. Memories Road Show is a state-wide digital history project that documents people, places, and events in Massachusetts history through family photographs and stories. Over fifty years ago an historian and a library director traveled the back roads of Kentucky (USA) with a portable microfilm camera, two lights, and a dream of preserving Kentucky’s newspapers. From their ambitions arose a successful newspaper preservation program at the University of Kentucky Libraries (UKL). Now in its sixth decade, the program has developed a new way of preserving contemporary born-digital newspapers. Jefferson Medical College yearbooks (published under various titles) are a rich source of Jefferson history. Scott Memorial Library and University Archives and Special Collections have been preserving the yearbooks by digitizing and uploading them to the Jefferson Digital Commons. Yearbooks from 1899 to 1960 were digitized previously and ten more years have been completed and added to the JDC in the latest phase of the project.
