This article explores the transferal of a historic library of books known as the Salzburger Collection, and the collaboration which resulted from this transferal between a library and archives.

This collection documents the development of the Park Avenue Hospital in Rochester, NY, its relocation from downtown Rochester to the suburb of Greece (where it was renamed Park Ridge Hospital), its growth there, and its subsequent merger with St. Mary’s Hospital to create the Unity Health System. Older materials documenting the Park Avenue Hospital also include information pertaining to the Park Avenue Hospital School of Nursing. The bulk of the collection consists of materials generated by the hospital administration and Corporate Communications Department: annual reports, meeting minutes, news releases, news clippings, newsletters, working files created by employees, and printed material …

Public Libraries And The Economically Disadvantaged: A Bibliometric Assessment Of Published Research, 1996-2016, Scott A. Manganello

One of the greatest challenges that American public libraries have faced is serving the disadvantaged and homeless population. This research project analyzed publication trends in LIS literature from the past 20 years pertaining to research related to public libraries and the economically disadvantaged, specifically publication trend over time, core journals, most prolific lead authors, and focus of the studies.

African American Archival Resources: Representation In North Carolina, South Carolina, And Georgia, Tekla Ali Johnson

The breadth, scope, security, evaluation, and preservation of African American archival resources in the United States are all understudied. Moreover, the scope and contents of the majority of African American resources are likely unknown. The purpose of this study was to compile a record of collections holding primary resources on African Americans to conducting research on African American Archival Resources in three states, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia.

As gender equality has become a more prominent issue and men and women have become more equal, one would expect this change to be reflected in children’s literature. This study examines four Newbery-Award winning books to determine if this change is apparent.

For every advance of information and communication technology in the 20thand 21st centuries, there has been gap between those who can readily adopt and benefit from it and those who cannot. As higher education becomes increasingly enmeshed in Internet-based learning, academic libraries will need to maintain and even increase digital literacy and fluency instruction in spite of presumed reduced need. Furthermore, academic libraries themselves will need to examine their own status in the divide.

Open-Source Opens Doors: A Case Study On Extending Archivesspace Code At Unlv Libraries, Cyndi Shein, Carol Ou, Karla Irwin, Carlos Lemus

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries is in its third year of implementing the open-source archival collection management application ArchivesSpace, and is sharing UNLV-developed code that extends ArchivesSpace’s built-in functions. The case study demonstrates how adopting and building upon community-created code and developing original local code is improving critical workflows that support creating collection descriptions, cleaning up metadata, and disseminating finding aids that are easier for researchers to comprehend. In the summer of 2017, the Marian Library—a special library devoted to the Blessed Virgin Mary within the larger University of Dayton Libraries system—completed a move of its rare book and archival collections into a new space within the main library building. The space, previously leased to the Society of Mary provincial archives, was already outfitted with a Liebert system for temperature and humidity controls, as well as shelving and some furniture.

Prior to the move, the rare book collection and archival holdings were stored in less than ideal conditions. In 2014, a consultant from Lyrasis conducted a preservation assessment …

This case study explores how one personal interest of President Minor Myers, jr.—that of a life-long book collector—influenced the University’s library collections and its leaders. Myers arrived with a desire to make IWU a nationally recognized, Phi Beta Kappa–affiliated institution. As one tactic for achieving these goals, Myers actively engaged in library collection development through practices shaped by his methods of book collecting. Bulk acquisitions—through gifts-in-kind and lot purchases—and a prohibition on weeding aided in his pursuits. His vision for the library challenged the style of the first university librarian (UL) who resigned two years after Myers’ arrival. The actions …
