Access to online archival materials has become vital for many academic historians and other researchers. The COVID-19 global pandemic has aimed the spotlight on the digital archival collections hosted by archives institutions and available through the web. In light of this increased role of digital archival collections, it is imperative for archivists to gain a better understanding of academic historians’ perceptions of these materials. The study reported in this article builds on previous work in the archives, history, and library and information studies disciplines to assess current perceptions that academic historians have toward digital archival collections. Hiring Student Workers As Subject Experts In Archives: A Case Study, Laura Romans

This article aims to share a successful experience of addressing a known knowledge gap within a special collections department by hiring and retaining a student worker with the needed content expertise. Outlined are the details of the lifecycle of the initial project for which the student was hired and reflections on the pros and cons of this mutually beneficial arrangement. By describing this experience in full, this case study can serve as a replicable model for managers within archives and special collections settings to intentionally hire student workers with advanced content knowledge.

The John Earl Cutler, MD papers contains 5 ledgers and some loose business-related papers, including two ledger books in which Dr. Cutler recorded patient fees and fees he paid to suppliers. The ledgers cover the years 1918 to 1922. Dr. Cutler recorded the names of his patients and the companies that paid for his services. He also recorded the drugs dispensed and the cost. He rarely mentions symptoms, which he treats. There are some loose receipts for repairs to Dr. Cutler's Franklin automobile and purchases from drug wholesalers. See more at MS 116.

Archival collections hold tangible documentation of the range of human experience. Diaries, letters, photographs, audio recordings, reports, and other paper and film-based materials tell the stories of people’s lives. Using examples from the vast parapsychology archives and rare book collections at the University of West Georgia, this paper will share people’s first-hand accounts of extraordinary incidents or of their supernatural abilities, from the profound to the disappointing, and from the unexpected to the purposefully sought, including near-death experiences, extrasensory perception, and psychedelic drug use.

Women print shop owners have existed for much longer than most people realize; the first examples in Mexico date to the seventeenth century. Unfortunately, these texts are not always clearly described in a way that is findable beyond searching “viuda de.” Though many title-pages describe their businesses in terms of being a widow of their husband, these business owners deserve credit for their entrepreneurial efforts and should be findable in their own right. In this update of a traditional image analysis exercise, students work together as partners or small groups to identify key components found in visual primary sources. Students analyze an image individually, answering a set of guided analysis questions. They communicate their findings with their partner or group, who analyzed a different, but related image. The groups answer additional questions after collaboratively reviewing, and potentially altering, their initial findings to develop a more complete understanding of the images, such as what is in the images, the purpose they were created for, or the creation time period. Through our work, we are aware of previous initiatives in this area, but written sources about the history of this work are patchy at best. This account offers a description of recent activity so that it is "on record". We recognise that a historical account of previous efforts would be valuable, but that is not our objective here. Lockdown Lemonade: Successful Remote Projects, Donica Swann

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced the closure of libraries and archives, many archives professionals assumed that working remotely afforded them limited opportunities to effectively do their jobs. These intrepid archivists pivoted, and used the lockdown as an opportunity to pursue projects they always wanted to undertake but never had time to pursue. Donica Swann will discuss managing a remote project conducted by non-Archives staff members that included transcription of 50 oral histories and the digitization of 100 more, while simultaneously supervising Archives staff’s efforts to create more digital content for users.

Purpose: This paper aims to show how managers/users’ communication and negotiations through electronic communication reflect individual and organizational resilience facing the global changes in ICT. The networked record structure, as the centre of the interactions, symbolizes the internal and external communication process in the organization.

Design/methodology/approach: We analysed the integrated network structures of the record from six government offices and three multinational corporations and one international Non-Government Organization in Indonesia as symbolic interactions between individuals and groups who easily cope with ICT innovation and who find the innovation to be challenging. In this paper, we use the topic of breast cancer as an example of health crisis erasure in both informational and institutional contexts, particularly within the transgender and gender-nonconforming population. Breast cancer health information conforms and defaults to conventional cultural associations with femininity, as is the case with pregnancy and other “single-sex” conditions (Surkan, 2015). Many health information and research practices normalize sexualities, pathologize non-normative gender (Drescher et al., 2012; Fish, 2008; Müller, 2018), and fail to recognize gender-nonconforming categories (Frohard‐Dourlent et al., 2017).
