The MakerLab and the Emerging Technology and Experiential Learning Unit team serves the Boise State University students, staff, and faculty. We offer access to emerging technologies, coaching on emerging technologies, and formal instruction on emerging technologies. In 2020, we welcomed a faculty member, a part time staff member, and two new student assistants. We welcomed Associate Professor Yitzhak "Yitzy" Paul who joined us as a faculty member in August 2020. This instruction session was developed to address an engineering professor’s concern that his students weren’t able to discern between factual and biased information. They weren’t evaluating the information they found, and readily accepted as truth anything pertinent to their research topic. While this plan was done in an elective civil engineering class, it could easily be adapted for any class using controversial and biased sources.

The following is a revised protocol based on assessment of the birds of a feather session held as part of University Libraries Convocation, 11 August 2020. The session was held in response to staff concerns about prioritization and workflow management during the COVID-19 pandemic, and was held over Zoom.

This was a peer-led session that was not affiliated with any organizational prioritization efforts or budget conversations. It is recommended that anyone wishing to replicate the session consider the power dynamics between facilitator and attendee, and revise as necessary to best fit your organizational context.

In January 1890, a week before Mary W. Howe and Helen F. Ryder were to graduate from the two year program at Bridgewater State, a fellow female student of the same class told school administration these two women, “early in their course,” had violated school regulations by going for a Sunday walk with two young men who were not students of the school. Results From A Psychology Oer Pilot Program: Faculty And Student Perceptions, Cost Savings, And Academic Outcomes, Juliana Magro, Sara V. Tabaei

Touro University Libraries Publications and Research

This case study describes the library’s experience of collaborating with an undergraduate Psychology Department at Touro College to integrate open textbooks into their program. We discuss the pedagogical changes as well as explore the impact of Open Educational Resources (OER) on students’ savings, their academic outcomes and perceptions of OER. Furthermore, we highlight the successes and shortcomings in having the library as a central OER partner. To measure the results, we surveyed students and conducted a faculty survey and a focus group, in addition to analyzing the students’ final grades. This pilot program delivered strong results. Background Identifying the most appropriate journal for a manuscript can be challenging for both experienced and novice nurse authors. Several factors should be considered when selecting a journal (e.g., peer-reviewed, target audience, type of manuscripts accepted, type of copyright and publishing model used). Selecting the most appropriate journal can save time for both authors and publishers.

This chapter argues that these benefits will accrue more quickly, and will be more significant and more enduring, if researchers make their data “meaningfully accessible.” Data are meaningfully accessible when they can be interpreted and analyzed by scholars far beyond those who generated them. Making data meaningfully accessible requires that scholars take the appropriate steps to prepare their data for sharing, and avail themselves of the increasingly sophisticated infrastructure for publishing and preserving research data. The better other researchers can understand shared data and the more researchers who can access them, the more those data will be re-used for secondary …

Virtually every evaluative task in the academy involves some sort of metric (Elkana et al. 1978; Espeland & Sauder 2016; Gingras 2016; Hix 2004; Jensenius et al. 2018; Muller 2018; Osterloh and Frey 2015; Todeschini & Baccini 2016; Van Noorden 2010; Wilsdon et al. 2015). One can decry this development, and inveigh against its abuses and its over-use (as many of the foregoing studies do). This paper is part of the LOEX 2019 conference proceedings and reports on an engaging information evaluation lesson designed by a team of librarians at Utah State University. Teaching evaluation skills in the highly emotional world of fake news is a daunting task. The lesson described here uses realistic case studies to give students the critical distance necessary to practice evaluation before diving into their personal research and biases. The article outlines the lesson’s case study activity and rationale in teaching students adaptable evaluation skills that they can apply in their academic, professional, and personal lives.

In 1996, the Linköping City Library in Sweden was destroyed by arson. Many materials were lost or very badly damaged. This paper looks at the circumstances that caused the fire to be so destructive in such a short amount of time and how the librarians at Linköping City Library worked to save the items that remained.

Helping Struggling Students Develop Skills For Academic Success: An Academic Library And Student Services Collaboration, Amy Castro, Julie B. Horwath

In the fall of 2018, two Touro University California (TUC) librarians began a collaboration with Academic Support Services to teach a library session in their 1-unit Pathways course offered each semester. This course is designed to help students develop skills for academic success, including time and stress management, professional communication, and study strategies. All students are welcome to enroll, but most Pathways students are identified by their program as needing additional support and referred to the course. Based on this, Academic Support determined a library session would help students improve their study and research skills, and the librarians agreed.
