The Research Repository @ WVU was launched in October 2018 to serve as the institutional repository for West Virginia University and a corner stone of the WVU Libraries Scholarly Communications & Publishing Program. The repository collects, preserves, and showcases creative and scholarly works from WVU faculty, staff, and students and makes them available to readers worldwide.

This report highlights the growth and impact of the Research Repository since its launch in October 2018. Statistics reported are accurate as of November 30, 2020.

Abram Healy was born in Fall River, MA (or possibly Maine) on October 3, 1836 to Abraham and Nancy (Coombs) Healy. He died June 18, 1889 in Fall River, MA of apoplexy (stroke) at age 52. He married Sarah Thompson (born in Maine, June 26, 1837, died 1919 of old age at 80 years old), October 23, 1862 and they had three children, Caroline “Carrie”, born in 1863, Carl, born in 1871 and Hattie, born 1873 (died 1878 in Nagasaki, Japan). The family moved between Maine and Massachusetts.

Charles William Sargent, PhD, AHIP, FMLA, director emeritus of the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Library of the Health Sciences and 1981–1982 president and member of the 1972–1975 Board of Directors of the Medical Library Association (MLA), died on January 8, 2020, in San Antonio, Texas. Sargent’s career in librarianship included positions at research, special, and health sciences libraries, as well as an appointment as a library school faculty member. He was known for his mentoring, interest in clinical librarianship, and belief in the power of organizations.

The Syracuse University Libraries’ Disaster Recovery Plan for library materials outlines procedures for salvaging a wide variety of library materials in the event of a disaster of minor emergency. We have designed this plan to help library staff cope with and recover materials from minor emergencies that typically involve 500 or less items. The majority of these emergencies will be caused by interior flooding due to leaky pipes (or water coming in from other vulnerable areas in library buildings) or from patron mishaps. The resultant wet books and other objects, such as photographs, microfilm, and sound recordings, can usually be …

Survival novels provide a host of attractions for children. On a continuum of danger, they are the high-risk counterparts of adventure narratives.

Characters in survival novels face not just adversity and risk, but also potential death. The fast pace and high drama of these narratives have always made them popular choices for children.

Desperately Seeking Funding: Library Guides To Student Funding, Rochelle Lundy, Reilly Curran

Library Faculty Scholarship

Purpose: This study examines online research guides as a measure of academic library support for students seeking educational funding opportunities.

Design/methodology/approach: The library websites of 38 members of a regional academic library consortium were examined for guides that address funding for educational purposes. Guide content was manually reviewed. Information regarding institutional characteristics was gathered from the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.

Findings: Despite relatively few reports of educational funding support in the library literature, online guides exist at 42% of studied institutions. However, few guides are comprehensive and many lack features that promote discoverability. Instructional content — guidance, …

A common issue present since makerspaces in libraries first began revolves around what types of equipment a library makerspace should have. Boise State University’s Albertsons Library undertook a substantial collection downsizing project in 2017. A survey tool was developed to investigate whether this project would strengthen working relationships between technical services staff and librarians. The survey would allow us to assess the process and its outcomes and gain insight into the emotions of those participating in the project. Survey results showed librarians and staff members had different experiences during the project. Librarians experienced more anxiety during the process than staff. More staff than librarians felt that there was a barrier to sharing their expertise due to their job role. Perceptions of …

This best practices document is intended to assist catalogers in creating bibliographic records for objects, which RDA refers to as three dimensional forms, according to RDA instructions. This document provides guidance for the most common object situations encountered in libraries. Each section includes examples that reflect the RDA instructions. A list of resources and a selection of full MARC record examples illustrating common situations encountered in cataloging objects (of various types) completes the document. Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis

Some archives have been quick to respond to the crisis in audio preservation brought on by the combined forces of obsolescence and degradation inherent in legacy audio formats and their playback equipment. These archives have undertaken digitization projects for particular collections or, in a few cases, have digitized the bulk of their audio holdings for preservation. Based on an examination of the literature on audio preservation, however, the responses of some institutions—particularly small and midsized institutions—have been stymied by roadblocks related to cost and expertise.
