The Value Of Economic Reality: Applying Economic Value Added, David M. Phillips Apr 2007

The Value Of Economic Reality: Applying Economic Value Added, David M. Phillips

Senior Honors Theses

The concept of Economic Value Added (EVA) is a revolutionary way to measure the value of a business. In its simplest form, EVA is a system that determines companies’ worth and performance based on their economic reality, not numbers produced according to traditional accounting rules. EVA sets high standards for measuring performance and is essential for all companies wishing to create value for their shareholders.

Measurement Of The Market Data For The Ocean And Coastal Economy, Charles S. Colgan Apr 2007

Measurement Of The Market Data For The Ocean And Coastal Economy, Charles S. Colgan

Publications

This paper supplements reports and data released on the Coastal and Ocean Economies of the United States by the NOEP. It provides a discussion of the relevant literature involved in the investigation of the Ocean and Coastal related Economies, the theoretical background of measures such as gross domestic product (GDP) and gross state product (GSP), and provides details on sources, methods, assumptions, and limitations of the data provided by NOEP.

Those concerned with the health of coastal and ocean resources increasingly need to understand the socio-economic context in which changes are occurring. The market data of the National Ocean Economics …

India’S Unlikely Democracy: Economic Growth And Political Accommodation, Aseema Sinha Apr 2007

India’S Unlikely Democracy: Economic Growth And Political Accommodation, Aseema Sinha

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

There is no doubt that India’s democracy has become stable, yet economic change could create distributional conflicts and stresses on its democratic institutions. Economic change and liberalization have served to reinforce and further stabilize democracy rather than undermining it. This has happened partly because of the nature of economic and social transition, which has allowed the rich many options in the private, urban, and global economy. Simultaneously, the poor are divided and seek redress through electoral and democratic channels. Weak coalition governments in the 1990s have responded to claims from the poor contributing to the continuing stability of Indian democracy.

Economy Of Change: The Organic Market As A Model For Agricultural Development In India, Amanda White Apr 2007

Economy Of Change: The Organic Market As A Model For Agricultural Development In India, Amanda White

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In India, 50% of children under five years of age are malnourished amidst a yearly surplus in grain production. Approximately 40% of food is lost in transport on a daily basis, yet the country has been able to prevent major famines for over 60 years. In a country with a GDP of 8-9% and an ever-growing presence on the international economic stage, these double standards cannot be tolerated. 260 million Indians live in extreme poverty, and 40% of those depend mainly on agricultural labor. This sector accounts for approximately 26% of India’s GDP, and provides employment for about 70% of …

Self-Employed, Self-Empowered: Working Women In Benares, Madeline S. Oatman Apr 2007

Self-Employed, Self-Empowered: Working Women In Benares, Madeline S. Oatman

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

“Economic independence is the password to women’s empowerment.”

Sathi Nair, a Senior Administrative Services official in Andhra Pradesh.

Twenty or so women sit peacefully on a cool cement floor at the Kutumb program center in Benares, India. The room floats like an oasis above the dusty heat of the street, and unobstructed light pours in through a large window. The women, heads bowed, black hair shining, are stitching and measuring, brows furrowed in concentration despite the lull of the lazy afternoon. They have come to learn a skill in order to make extra income, to be around women, exchange advice …

Crédito Y Confianza: Los Impactos Socioeconómicos De Fondo Esperanza En Temuco Y Padre Las Casas, Rebecca Berwick

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Microcredit is not a 21st century phenomenon, but it has gained remarkable momentum recently, with the awarding of the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize to the founder of the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh. Fondo Esperanza saw a need for such facilitated access to small loans around Chile. Though Chile is often viewed as a model for Latin American macroeconomic success, it maintains one of the worst distributions of wealth in the world. Much of Chile’s disadvantaged people attempt to make a living through the operation of micro-businesses. In my research, I explored Fondo Esperanza’s operations in Temuco: its organizational structure and …

How Do Women In Prek Toal Village (Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve, Cambodia) Participate In And Benefit From Ecotourism?, Amy Dowley

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Abstract This study assesses how women in the floating village of Prek Toal in the Tonle Sap Biosphere Reserve, participate and benefit from the ecotourism activities in their area. The study also investigates women’s perspective on ecotourism within their community, how it affects their lives, and if they have expectations of current and future benefits or changes resulting from ecotourism. This study is conducted in the context of current studies on livelihoods in the Tonle Sap region, including the recent technical report, “Influence of Built Structures on Local Livelihoods: Case Studies of Road Development, Irrigation, and Fishing Lots,”(ADB, 2007a) identifying …

Religion And Community: Mexican Americans In South Omaha (1900-1980) - Ollas Report No. 4, Maria S. Arbelaez Apr 2007

Religion And Community: Mexican Americans In South Omaha (1900-1980) - Ollas Report No. 4, Maria S. Arbelaez

Latino/Latin American Studies Reports

Mexicans, like all other ethnic groups that created the United States as a nation of immigrants, were adamant in establishing churches of their own. Ethnic religious affiliations were essentially of Judeo-Christian origin and benefited effectively from the tolerance of worship mandated by the Constitution. Freedom of belief was known, demanded, and exercised by all immigrants. For Mexican and other ethnic communities, religious belief and centers of worship were the very heart of their community and identity bonds, their source of strength and reason to persevere in a new society where multiple nationalities, cultures, languages, and ethnicities converged.

The Role Of Industrial And Traditional Fishing In Sustainable Resource Management, Aime Schwartz Apr 2007

The Role Of Industrial And Traditional Fishing In Sustainable Resource Management, Aime Schwartz

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

For decades, the notion of ‘sustainable development’ has been a source of international contention and debate. While the meanings and implications of sustainable development are widely disputed, it is interpreted by many as an ideal that encompasses social, environmental and economic spheres while promoting the value of human rights in development. Theoretically, this approach allows for the quality of life of current and future generations to be considered in environmental decision-making and formally recognized by national and international standards, dictated primarily by wealthy industrialized governments (Adebowale et al 138). Policy-makers in developing nations continuously face the struggle to balance the …

The Impact Of Privatization On Economic Growth And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Samuel Adams Apr 2007

The Impact Of Privatization On Economic Growth And Income Inequality In Developing Countries, Samuel Adams

School of Public Service Theses & Dissertations

In the 1960s and 1970s academicians, economists and politicians favored state ownership over private ownership in the production and provision of goods and services. By the end of the 1980s, however, there was a reversal of public policy from state domination of the production and provision of goods and services to private ownership and operation. This was due in part to what the World Bank referred to as "state failure”, which was characterized by inefficient service delivery, unprofitable SOEs, high government debt, and stagnant economic growth rates. Accordingly, privatization caught on in many countries as a policy tool to foster …

The Persistence Of Corruption And Slow Economic Growth By Paolo Mauro Imf Staff Papers: A Review, A. U. Musa Mar 2007

The Persistence Of Corruption And Slow Economic Growth By Paolo Mauro Imf Staff Papers: A Review, A. U. Musa

Economic and Financial Review

The author listed two classical corruption practice that has impeded on economic growth i.e. (i) the individual bureaucrat who allocates his labour services between productive activity and theft of government resources in a classical case of portfolio adjustment and (ii) the corrupt politician who sets a bribe collection system (a bribe rate) with the maximization of utility as his goal vis-Ã -vis similar decisions by fellow politicians.

Capital Flight And Economic Performance, Edsel L. Beja Jr Feb 2007

Capital Flight And Economic Performance, Edsel L. Beja Jr

Economics Department Faculty Publications

Capital flight aggravates resource constraints and contributes to undermine longterm economic growth. Counterfactual calculations on the Philippines suggest that capital flight contributed to lower the quality of long-term economic growth. Sustained capital flight over three decades means that capital flight had a role for the Philippines to lose the opportunities to achieve economic takeoff. Unless decisive policy actions are taken up to address enduring capital flight and manage the macroeconomy more effectively, the Philippines remains caught in the perpetuity of crises, its economy hollowed-out, the people trapped in poverty, and once again, the country is frustrated from realizing a takeoff.

Two New Lessons From Asian Miracles, Hing-Man Leung Feb 2007

Two New Lessons From Asian Miracles, Hing-Man Leung

Research Collection School Of Economics

Four Asian economies – Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan – have grown at spectacular speeds adopting different strategies. Past debates focused on their growth takeoff. The present paper studies their future outlook. As an economy matures, sustaining economic performance requires innovation and technology upgrading. Hong Kong, under a minimalist administration, is now critically deficient in technology. Singapore, dependent on foreign multinationals, is struggling to become a creator and not just a user of technology. We seek to explain why Hong Kong and Singapore are so much less innovative than Korea and Taiwan.

Business Output And Business Experience: Evidence From China's Nongovernmental Businesses, Liangjun Su Feb 2007

Business Output And Business Experience: Evidence From China's Nongovernmental Businesses, Liangjun Su

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the application of the Solow growth model in China's non-governmental businesses and propose a reasonable modification for it. Our analysis indicates that business experience is closely tied to the output of China's non-governmental businesses. Our major findings include: (1) the business experience has little overall impact on the elasticity of output with respect to labour; (2) the business experience has a large impact on the elasticity of output with respect to capital and the elasticity increases as the business experience increases; (3) the adjusted Solow residual that reflects technological progress exhibits a negative relationship with the business experience, …

Capital Gains, Dividends, And Taxes: Market Reactions To Tax Changes, Mark Foster, Larry White, Michael T. Young

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of a capital gains tax reduction on the stock price of firms that have not historically paid a dividend. If markets are semi-strong-form efficient, one would expect that the market price would have already adjusted prior to the day the announcement was made, assuming no new information was included in the announcement. If markets have not already incorporated the information, there would be a possibility for abnormal returns from investing in the stocks on the date of the announcement. This paper studies the returns from companies prior to, and subsequent …

Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva Jan 2007

Voices Of The Poor: Poverty And Growth In Albania, Magda Tsaneva

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

This paper uses three waves of panel surveys at the household level to study growth and poverty in Albania over the period 2002-2004. It attempts to answer two main questions. The first question is directed at finding the micro determinants of growth and aims to expose the obstacles households face to improve their economic situation. The main focus of the analysis is to investigate the importance of health, education, and infrastructure indicators for income growth. The second question asks whether growth in Albania during the period 2002-2004 has been pro-poor. I find that there is some evidence for a convergence …

Internal Increasing Returns To Scale And Economic Growth, John A. List, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2007

Internal Increasing Returns To Scale And Economic Growth, John A. List, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

This study develops a model of endogenous growth based on increasing returns due to firms' technology choices. Particular attention is paid to the implications of these choices, combined with the substitution of capital for labor, on economic growth in a general equilibrium model in which the R&D sector produces machines to be used for the sector producing final goods. We show that incorporating oligopolistic competition in the sector producing finals goods into a general equilibrium model with endogenous technology choice is tractable, and we explore the equilibrium path analytically. The model illustrates a novel manner in which sustained per capita …

The Meaning Of Poverty: Questions Of Distribution And Power, Arthur Macewan Jan 2007

The Meaning Of Poverty: Questions Of Distribution And Power, Arthur Macewan

Economics Faculty Publication Series

Focusing on the low-income parts of the world and reviewing the different ways we can define poverty, I first argue that what people generally mean by poverty – or, more broadly, by economic well-being – cannot be adequately captured by a single, absolute measure such as income level or a more complex aggregate such as the Human Development Index. Not only do these measures fail to account for the complexity of human material needs, but they also fail to recognize the importance of distributional issues. The failure to incorporate a consideration of distribution in defining poverty (or, more generally, economic …

Washington Dollars And The Puerto Rican Economy: Amounts, Impacts, Alternatives, Arthur Macewan, Angel Ruiz Jan 2007

Washington Dollars And The Puerto Rican Economy: Amounts, Impacts, Alternatives, Arthur Macewan, Angel Ruiz

Economics Faculty Publication Series

By examining the Washington to Puerto Rico flow of funds in some detail and comparing it with the flow of federal funds to the states, this paper demonstrates that the island’s receipt of funds is not uniquely large and cannot be viewed as representing the “largess” of U.S. taxpayers. The funds coming from Washington to Puerto Rico cannot bear the weight of responsibility for the island’s economic problems that various sources have placed upon them. Puerto Rico’s economic ills have to be explained by a larger set of factors. Nonetheless, some of the Washington to Puerto Rico transfer programs may …

Lawyers And Community Economic Development, William H. Simon Jan 2007

Lawyers And Community Economic Development, William H. Simon

Faculty Scholarship

The Articles in this symposium and the experiences they report show that, for lawyers, Community Economic Development (CED) has become a more expansive and more complex subject than it was when we discovered it two decades or so ago.

The Articles and the experiences are particularly revealing about what I would guess have been the two central preoccupations of lawyers in the field. The first, of course, is what we mean by community, and more specifically, how a community can become – or be regarded as – a legal and political actor. The second concerns lawyer accountability. Progressive lawyers have …

Stock Prices And Economic Growth: Are They Related?, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh Jan 2007

Stock Prices And Economic Growth: Are They Related?, Peter J. Saunders, Koushik Ghosh

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of Business

This paper investigates the relationship between economic growth and stock prices in the U.S. Quarterly data on NASDAQ, DJIA, S&P 500 and real GDP ranging from the first quarter of 1971 to the fourth quarter of 2005 are analyzed. Cointegration test results indicate that while RGDP and S&P 500 are not cointegrated, RGDP and NASDAQ appear to be cointegrated. VEC analyses of the RGDP and NASDAQ data indicate that in the short-run, RGDP has a positive impact on stock prices. Further Granger causality testing of the data indicates that RGDP Granger -causes both changes in DJIA and S&P 500.
