A New Induction Proof Of The Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem, Sarvesh Bandhu, Rohit Kumar
A New Induction Proof Of The Gibbard-Satterthwaite Theorem, Sarvesh Bandhu, Rohit Kumar
Working Papers
In this paper, we provide a new induction proof of the Gibbard–Satterthwaite theorem, where the induction argument builds on n = 1 rather than the existing proofs using n = 2. The provided proof is much shorter, and the arguments are very intuitive, which will be helpful in teaching and for beginners in this field.
Queueing Problem With Dynamic And Heterogeneous Opportunity Costs, Sarvesh Bandhu, Parikshit De, Devwrat Dube
Queueing Problem With Dynamic And Heterogeneous Opportunity Costs, Sarvesh Bandhu, Parikshit De, Devwrat Dube
Working Papers
We study queueing problems in which agents have heterogeneous per-period waiting costs (their private information), which can vary with queue position and are thus dynamic. Our goal is to implement a Rawlsian allocation rule that minimises the maximum of individual waiting costs among all agents. Under complete information, we introduce the Just Algorithm, a simple method that always selects a Rawlsian queue. However, in settings with incomplete information where agents possess multidimensional private types i.e., the vector of their per-period waiting costs for each period, we prove that no Dominant Strategy Incentive-Compatible (DSIC) mechanism can implement the Rawlsian queueing rule …
Implementing Efficiency With Equality, Sarvesh Bandhu, Ratul Lahkar
Implementing Efficiency With Equality, Sarvesh Bandhu, Ratul Lahkar
Working Papers
We consider the implementation of efficiency with minimum inequality in a large population model of negative externalities. Formally, the model is one of tragedy of the commons with the aggregate strategy at the efficient state being lower than at the Nash equilibrium. A planner can restore efficiency by imposing an externality equivalent tax and then redistributing the tax revenue as transfers to lower inequality. We characterize the payment scheme that minimizes inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient, at the efficient state subject to incentive compatibility and budget balance. We then construct a mechanism that implements efficiency with minimum inequality …

Rural Credit And Self-Help Groups: Micro-Finance Needs And Concepts In India By K G Karmakar, New Delhi: Sage Publications,1999., M S Sriram
IIMB Management Review
Microfinance is the latest buzzword in developmental circles. Inspired by the success of the Grameen Bank experience of Bangladesh and its extensive documentation, there are several experiments being carried out in India as well. Naturally, literature about these experiments follows. Rural Credit and Savings is one sector which has been damaged almost beyond repair by the excessive intervention of the state and therefore people are trying to look at unconventional solutions. In the light of immense action happening in the microfinance sector, Karmakar’s book is not only timely but also an important addition to the existing literature.

Knowledge: The New Republic, K L Chopra
IIMB Management Review
As the societies of the world have progressed from the spoken to the written medium, to the audiovisual and finally to the electronic media for communication, civilisations have undergone enormous changes. With the IT revolution, coupled with an era of globalised economics and commerce, 'knowledge' power, as K L Chopra puts it, will increasingly dominate the governance, social and economic structure and lifestyle of a nation. In this Republic of Knowledge, the 'knowledge worker', 'knowledge engineering' and 'knowledge factories' will play a pivotal role in determining its health and wealth. However, it remains to be seen whether the new Republic …

Public Sector Management And Change Psus: Are We Ready To Change?, Abhoy K Ojha
IIMB Management Review
Public sector companies have played a major role in the Indian economy. With 45% of all investment in India accounted for by PSUs and with the liberalisation of the Indian economy it is imperative that they become more productive and accountable. Are we ready to change and manage change? The objective response is that PSUs will not only have to change but change fast. The real challenge is in gearing up for change.

Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander
Doing Business In The Third World- With Special Reference To India, Premchander
IIMB Management Review
Dictators, debts and declining economies are the dangers of the third world which have effectively kept away western businesses. The term third world, a product of the now defunct cold war, refers to those nations which currently constitute three fourths of the world population that are poor. This is a variegated grouping of nations with differing political systems, ranging from Westminster type democracies, neo-fascist dictatorships to monarchies -hereditary and otherwise. The sustaining economic models may be capitalist, Marxian or any acceptable mix of the two leading some writers to believe in the existence of convergent capitalism where elements of freemarket …

Self-Employment Programme For Rural Youth: The Role Of Non Governmental Organisations(Ngos), S N Sangita
IIMB Management Review
The Author offers a comparative analysis of govemment and non-government organisations in implementing rural development programme in four districts of Kamataka. He found a distinct variation in the performance of these organisations. The philosophies, strategies, and methods adopted by these organisations appeared to be mainly responsible for the effectiveness of the programme. The adoption of grass-root level planning, selection or operation in a smaller area, involvement of the people, supervision and commitment of its personnel in NGOs mainly contributed for the effective implementation of the progamme. On the other hand, top down approach, uniform policy with inappropriate administrative structures and …
