Islamic Presentation On Social Media Communication, Adnan Osama Shareefi Jan 2013

Islamic Presentation On Social Media Communication, Adnan Osama Shareefi

Student Theses and Dissertations

The evolution of social networking sites and their integration with many modern-life aspects has urged religious people and parties as well to develop ways and tools to reach and communicate with others. Precisely, people who follow the religion of Islam have also used social networking sites to communicate religiously and to promote their religion and culture. This research has surveyed people who practice Islam to determine their usage of social networking sites to express their religious beliefs. This study attempts to answer three research questions and examine a hypothesis. Findings suggest that Muslims obtain religious communication on social media frequently …

Steve Jobs' Moment Of Silence, Janet Dooley Jan 2013

Steve Jobs' Moment Of Silence, Janet Dooley

SOJMC Faculty Research

Steve Jobs, founder and longtime center of Apple Inc. passed away on October 5, 2011. Tributes to this visionary were spontaneous and abundant. Two students from the School of Visual Arts in New York, Hyui Yong Kim and Bryan Wolff, working with KNARF® Advertising, conceived of a means by which a traditional remembrance, the moment of silence, was upgraded to a modern technological tribute. Users of iPods, iPhones, iPads and other computing devices could download to their iTunes library eight seconds of silence as a remembrance to Jobs’ contributions to technology, to communication and to the impact on their …

Procrastination And The Shifting Political Media Environment: An Experimental Study Of Media Choice Affecting A Democratic Outcome, Morgan E. Ellithorpe, Lance Holbert, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly Jan 2013

Procrastination And The Shifting Political Media Environment: An Experimental Study Of Media Choice Affecting A Democratic Outcome, Morgan E. Ellithorpe, Lance Holbert, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications

The shifting media environment is expected to have a variety of effects on political knowledge and behavior. An experimental study was conducted to assess the influence of media environment on news consumption, perceptions of media experience quality, and success on a political outcome. In addition, procrastination is introduced as a potentially important individual-difference variable with assessments offered for both its main effects and its ability to moderate the influence of media environment. Media environment complexity predicted lower news use and higher success on our political outcome. Procrastination’s effect was on media experience perceptions and a media environment-by-procrastination interaction on this …

Medical Tourism: The Role Of Communication Regarding Risks And Benefits Of Obtaining Medical Services Abroad., Kevin Wright, Alicia Mason

Faculty Submissions

The ever-increasing globalization of healthcare has led to a greater number of consumers using the World Wide Web for the purpose of accessing health information and medical services that transcends international borders (Kangas, 2010; Lunt, Mannion, & Exworthy, 2012; MacReady, 2007; Snyder, Crooks, Adams, Kingsbury, & Johnston, 2011). When faced with the high cost of health care or limited treatment options in the United States, more and more Americans are looking to developing countries to obtain a variety of health-related services, including cosmetic surgery, dentistry, diagnostic testing, fertility treatment, and major surgeries such as heart valve operations and organ transplants …

Sperm Stealers & Post Gay Politics: Lesbian-Parented Families In Film And Television, Elena Rose Martinez

Theses Digitization Project

This study is theoretically significant because it addresses gaps in scholarly knowledge regarding media representations of same-sex parented families, and more specficially, lesbian-parented families. Findings of this study may also inform content-producers as to trends in representation and relevant issues of power and sexuality as well as political-economic factors to consider in future productions. This study addresses the political economy of a segment of sexual minorities that already have an uneasy history with marketers: lesbians.

Packaging Inspiration: Al Qaeda’S Digital Magazine Inspire In The Self-Radicalization Process, Susan Currie Sivek Jan 2013

Packaging Inspiration: Al Qaeda’S Digital Magazine Inspire In The Self-Radicalization Process, Susan Currie Sivek

Faculty Publications

Al Qaeda is today a fragmented organization, and its strategic communication efforts now focus largely on recruiting individuals in the West to carry out “individual jihad” in their home countries. One Al Qaeda–affiliated publication, Inspire, represents an unusual use of the digital magazine format and content for recruitment. This study examines the content and design of Inspire to determine how the magazine may advance the self-radicalization that it seeks to induce in its readers. This analysis finds that the magazine weaves together jihadist ideology, a narrow interpretation of Islam, and appropriations of Western popular culture to maximize the publication’s …

City Magazines And Social Media: Moving Beyond The Monthly, Susan Currie Sivek Jan 2013

City Magazines And Social Media: Moving Beyond The Monthly, Susan Currie Sivek

Faculty Publications

City magazines have long been established in many American locales, but digital media of all types are now offering opportunities and challenges to this genre of magazine. Digital media have also complicated the rapidly changing ecosystems of local information in which urban citizens reside. The resources and popularity of newspapers and broadcast news have shifted, and other forms of print, digital, and mobile media are assuming important roles in informing the public. With all these factors at work, this may be a pivotal moment for city magazines as they explore innovative technology, creative business strategies, and the new possibilities for …

Eco-Terrorism Or Eco-Tage: An Argument For The Proper Frame, David Thomas Sumner, Lisa M. Weidman Jan 2013

Eco-Terrorism Or Eco-Tage: An Argument For The Proper Frame, David Thomas Sumner, Lisa M. Weidman

Faculty Publications

What does the term “terrorism” mean? Is it accurate to lump illegal acts that destroy property but carefully avoid harming people into the same category as acts clearly intended to kill? Is this a difference of kind or just of degree? While we (the authors) don't generally endorse the destruction of property as a method of generating social change, we believe that the destruction of property is fundamentally different from the intentional killing of people; therefore, to label acts of obstruction, trespassing, vandalism, sabotage, or arson as “terrorism” is inaccurate and has the potential to damage one's understanding of real …
