U.S. Policy: Food Production In Low Income Countries, Donald Taylor May 1981

U.S. Policy: Food Production In Low Income Countries, Donald Taylor

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

This paper reflects observations and experiences arising from the author's living and working as a specialist in agricultural development in Asia during 1965-1980. The basic issues addressed are whether the USA should be involved with efforts to improve food production systems in low-income countries and, if so, what might be the forms of that involvement.

How The Imm Can Help Banks, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1981

How The Imm Can Help Banks, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I am very pleased to be in San Francisco. This is such a delightful city that I sometimes wish I were President of a San Francisco Commodity Exchange. But that would not be fair to Chicago, a truly great city, or to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, an outstanding business and financial institution. I hope all of you will become exposed to them both. You will like what you see. The times they are a changin! And changin fast, everywhere. I head an Exchange that is several decades old and steeped in agricultural tradition. We' were once called the Butter and …

Hedging Techniques For Agricultural Producers, Clayton K. Yeutter Jan 1981

Hedging Techniques For Agricultural Producers, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

I am delighted to be here today talking about hedging and how it can be applied to the marketing strategies of agricultural producers in agriculture. It is good to have so much interest developing at the marketing end of agriculture, because it seems do me that too much attention has long been paid to production and too little to marketing. Even in the United States, which has developed perhaps the most sophisticated marketing techniques in the world, farmers are still too production oriented. Futures markets, where hedging techniques can be applied the best, are more than 100 years old in …

Projecting Regional Market Shares For Selected Florida Fresh Market Vegetables, Wayne H. Howard, Arden W. Colette Jan 1981

Projecting Regional Market Shares For Selected Florida Fresh Market Vegetables, Wayne H. Howard, Arden W. Colette

Agribusiness

Growers of tomatoes, cucumbers, eggplants and green peppers in Florida have exhibited concern about their market share in the U.S. winter fresh vegetable market. Several studies have looked at the affects of changes in tariffs and Market Orders on Florida's market share from 1962-1979 using regression and time-series analysis. Florida produce dominates the market in the eastern regions during the winter and spring season. Even though the market shares fluctuate, Florida has historically had a smaller share. The market shares have stabilized after the shocks. Forecast market shares, based on the time-series models, show Florida's producers maintaining their dominance in …

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Economic Considerations, Frances Turner, John Strak

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

There has been increasing public concern in the U.K. and other European countries about some of the intensive methods of livestock production used in modern agriculture. The battery system of egg production, which produces almost all of the eggs consumed in Britain, has aroused particular opposition, but there is also strong feeling about housing systems that effectively immobilize their inhabitants, such as certain types of veal calf and pig rearing units. In a recent test case in West Germany, an egg producer was charged with "continuous cruelty" to his 60,000-strong battery flock. A high court decided it was cruel to …

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox Jan 1981

Farm Animal Welfare: Some Opinions, Michael W. Fox

International Journal for the Study of Animal Problems

The subject of farm animal welfare has evoked a wide range of responses from those involved in the livestock industry and those concerned about the humaneness of intensive husbandry farming practices. Books have been published

on the subject (Harrison, 1964; Mason & Singer, 1980; Dawkins, 1980, and Fox, 1980 and 1981), as well as many articles in professional and popular magazines. Three international symposia dealing with animal rights have

been held in the last two years (Lehman, 1980; Miller, 1981; Paterson and Ryder, 1980), and a major European conference dealing with farm animal welfare and involving veterinarians, farmers, animal scientists, …

Simulating The Water Requirements And Economic Feasibility Of Corn In The Midwest, Wendi L. Palmer, B. J. Barfield, M. E. Bitzer, C. T. Haan

KWRRI Research Reports

An evaluation of the economics of supplemental irrigation when using a surface water supply must be site specific in order to account for variations in soil moisture holding capacity, watershed area supplying the runoff, climatic conditions, and proposed irrigation management procedures.

With the use of farm specific simulation models to determine grain yields, availability of irrigation water, and economic expenditures involved in irrigation, an economic evaluation of supplemental irrigation can be performed, In the model presented in this report, the Duncan SIMAIZ model is used to predict grain yields using long-term daily weather information. SIMAIZ also determines irrigation water demand …

Major Tax Reductions And Public Education, Philip Favero Sep 1980

Major Tax Reductions And Public Education, Philip Favero

Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)

The following discussion of tax reductions uses as an example South Dakota’s own version of Proposition 13, the Dakota Proposition. In the discussion which follows, four major themes are developed. First, Dakota Proposition would have a very major consequence for public finance in South Dakota-beginning in 1982 and extending indefinitely thereafter. Second, Dakota Proposition and other major tax reduction proposals have a variety of origins---some particular to the relevant state, and some more general origins as well. Third, common misunderstanding and, indeed, ignorance exists about the benefits provided by public education and about taxation to support education. And finally, Dakota …

Optimal Regional Conjunctive Water Management, Jay E. Noel, Delworth B. Gardner, Charles V. Moore Aug 1980

Optimal Regional Conjunctive Water Management, Jay E. Noel, Delworth B. Gardner, Charles V. Moore

Agribusiness

An optimal control model is used to determine the socially optimal spatial and temporal allocation of groundwater and surface water among agricultural and urban uses. The control model is described briefly and its advantages over other dynamic models are enumerated. Optimal rates of groundwater pumpage over the planning horizon were highly sensitive to increasing energy costs. Groundwater basins are shown to react differently to alternative economic and hydrological parameters. In a dynamic setting, a policy of pump taxes was shown empirically to be superior to pro-rata quotas and uncontrolled pumpage.

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1979-80, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson Jun 1980

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1979-80, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

The Department of Agricultural Economics conducted its third annual farm real estate market survey for 1979-80. Questionnaires were mailed in January, 1980 to nearly 500 survey reporters across Nebraska which included rural appraisers, real estate brokers, professional farm managers, and farm mortgage lenders.

These reporters estimated the average per acre value of farmland in their respective or surrounding counties as of February 1st for both 1979 and 1980 by the major land uses for that area. With exception of center pivot irrigated land in the Northwest Crop Reporting District, land values generally demonstrated strong gains during 1979 with the largest …
