Development In World Commodity Markets During The Third Quarter Of 1983, Central Bank Of Nigeria Cbn

Economic and Financial Review

In spite of random swings during the period, the prices of most of Nigeria's agricultural export commodities continued to maintain the rising trend observed since the forth quarter of 1982. The trend reflects the continued decline in the supply of most of the commodities due to adverse weather conditions and in some cases natural disasters. Detailed analysis of developments in some of the major commodities markets are given in this article.

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1982-83, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson Jun 1983

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1982-83, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Farmland values in Nebraska continued to decline during 1982 On the average, values as of February 1, 1983 were about 11 percent below year-earlier levels. The continuation of a recession plagued farm economy and stiff monetary efforts to combat inflation definitely contributed to this land market weakness.

In nominal terms, current land values are comparable to 1979 levels. However, after adjusting for inflation, current values in real (purchasing power) dollar terms are basically equivalent to those of .the mid-1970's.

For most areas of the State and most types of land, land values "peaked" by 1981 after nearly a decade of …

Canadian & American Agriculture: Competitors? Cooperators? Or Both?, Clayton K. Yeutter

Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers

It is a pleasure for me to be in Toronto, for the first time ever. My wife and I honeymooned in Canada 30 years ago, so every return trip to your beautiful country is a nostalgic experience. With an 80 cent exchange rate, we really ought to come back for another honeymoon in June and stay the rest of the year! Marshall Loeb, one of our outstanding business journalists, delivered a speech a couple of years ago in which he predicted the winning nations in international economic competition for the next decade or two. His top category encompassed only five …

The Water Outlook And Economic Development In The West, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1983

The Water Outlook And Economic Development In The West, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

The development of water is practically synonymous with the development of the Western United States, and much of the region's wealth is tied up in the rights to utilize water. It is this relationship between water development and allocation and the creation and distribution of existing wealth that makes water policy so controversial and is the principal focus of this paper.

The Distribution Of Economic Rents When Irrigated Farmland Is Leased, Ray G. Huffaker, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Irrigation water supplied by federal reclamation projects has often been priced below its supply cost (Bureau of Reclamation, 1980, p. F-4). Pricing water below cost has been deliberate policy to stimulate irrigation development in the west. One effect of this underpricing is to add to the economic rents captured by federal water users.

A Welfare Analysis Of Production And Consumption Of Broadbeans In Egypt, B. Gardner Delworth, Adel N. Moustafa, Dyaa Abdou Jan 1983

A Welfare Analysis Of Production And Consumption Of Broadbeans In Egypt, B. Gardner Delworth, Adel N. Moustafa, Dyaa Abdou

Faculty Publications

The broadbean is one of the most important food items in Egypt and is both heavily subsidized and rationed, although the per family entitlement depends on quantities available. It is the basic staple for breakfast for most Egyptians in both rural and urban areas. The governmental policies that determine the production, marketing, and distribution of broadbeans affect consumers and producers. The government budget is also affected by the subsidy and trade policies. Thus, virtually every Egyptian is touched by policies affecting this crop and consumption commodity.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Account For The Year Ended 31st December, 1982, Central Bank Of Nigeria

CBN Annual Report

The economic slowdown in 1981-1982 led to a decline in mineral and export crop production, with crude oil production falling from 1.440 million barrels in 1981 to 1.29 million barrels in 1982. The Central Bank of Nigeria business survey showed increased manufacturing sales and inventories of finished goods. Inflation decelerated to its lowest level since 1973, mainly due to reduced monetary expansion and increased production of staple food, livestock products, and fish. The money supply rose by 5.6% in 1980 and 3.1% in 1982, but the government sector's share in bank credit increased. The Gross National Product of all industrialized …

Food Consumption An Distribution: An Overview, Dyaa Abdou, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

Nearly everyone concedes that Egypt is faced with a serious food problem. The Egyptian agricultural sector is unable to feed the increasing and more affluent population. In 1980, agricultural output was estimated to be increasing by about 2.0 percent annually, whereas the country's annual population growth rate was estimated at about 2.3 percent. If the difference in these growth rates continues, Egypt must increase imports each year just to maintain per capita consumption at the present level [3].

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1981-82, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson Jul 1982

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1981-82, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson

Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports

Nebraska farm real estate values declined nearly 4 percent during the past year. The reasons are quite obvious -- low farm income, changing inflation expectations, and continued high interest rates. The combination of these fac tors has drastically altered what was a "bullish" land market up until 1980.

During the 1970's, farmland values were appreciating rapidly. The average increase was approximately twice the rate of inflation. The real value (purchasing power)of farmland doubled during this decade. Financial leveraging was extremely profitable for farmland investors and land prices were quickly bid up.

The past year represents quite a contrast. Adding an …
