Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1983-84, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Developments In 1983-84, Bruce B. Johnson, Ronald J. Hanson
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
Farm real estate values across Nebraska continued to decline even further during 1983 and into 1984. Nebraska farmland values have now trended downward for more than three and one-half consecutive years. For the year ending February 1, 1984, farmland values decreased more than 8 percent. Moreover, a special mid-year survey for 1984 indicates that the average land values have declined another 8 percent since February 1. Continued financial problems in the farming sector have forced many owners to put their land on the market. Coupled with little demand among potential buyers, this increased number of land tracts offered for sale …

Two Basic Option Strategies For Producers: Buying Puts And Shorting Calls, Brian Schmiesing
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Beginning in the Fall of 1984, agricultural producers and agribusinesses will be confronted with another dimension of the deregulation trend in American Industry. Options on domestically produced agricultural commodities once again can be traded. As the country debates the 1985 Farm Bill, producers and agribusinesses must be making every effort to be prepared for the possibility of greater dependence on the market oriented policies in agriculture. In a free market environment, options, and their associated strategies must be considered as part of producer and agribusiness market strategies. This paper describes the basic terms and types of options, examines two option …

Analysis Of The Costs And Returns Of Pasturing Irrigated Alfalfa For Beef Production In Utah In 1983, Irvin R. Bowen
Analysis Of The Costs And Returns Of Pasturing Irrigated Alfalfa For Beef Production In Utah In 1983, Irvin R. Bowen
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
The purpose of this study was to analyze the economics of pasturing feeder steers on irrigated alfalfa and compare this alternative to harvesting, storing, and selling alfalfa hay as well as selling standing alfalfa in the field. Available prices, costs and returns were calculated for fall planted wheat as a rotation crop, alfalfa establishment, alfalfa hay, alfalfa sold standing in the field, and pasturing feeder steers of different weight classifications on alfalfa with side roll irrigation. A case study mode 1 farm was developed to examine the cost and returns of each enterprise option. The pasturing of feeder steers on …

Agricultural Economics In Multidiscipline Research And Extension: Leading, Following, Integrating, Thomas Dobbs
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Multidiscipline agricultural research and extension provide special challenges to natural and social scientists. Each discipline, including agricultural economics, has unique strengths which can contribute to the effectiveness of multidiscipline programs. Each also faces special challenges and difficulties in such endeavors. This paper is intended to convey some of the major roles and challenges concerning involvement of agricultural economics in multidiscipline research and extension. It ls hoped that a better understanding of these roles and challenges will enable agricultural economists and their col leagues in other agricultural disciplines to more effectively work together. Thus, the intended audience for this paper includes …

A Cross Sectional Analysis Of Agricultural Land Prices In Nebraska 1978-1982, Gordon L. Carriker, Charles E. Curtis, Bruce B. Johnson
Nebraska Farm Real Estate Reports
Land Value expectations are important to land owners, agricultural producers, lenders, governmental agencies, and other parties. Greater understanding of land values and the factors involved in their determination is therefore beneficial to the decision-making process.
The analysis of farmland values has been a major focus on the agricultural economics profession for several decades. Early research focused primarily on the measurement of the relationship of income levels to land values. In more recent years, econometric models have attempted to uncover additional economic factors which influence the value of farmland.
Econometric models have used many quantification techniques ranging from single-equation ordinary least …
Changing Times In South Dakota Agriculture: Implications For Our Citizens, Larry Janssen
Changing Times In South Dakota Agriculture: Implications For Our Citizens, Larry Janssen
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
We are living in times of rapid change in agriculture and in rural America. Hog and beef confinement systems, automated feeding systems, pesticides, four-wheel drive tractors and personal computers are innovations that did not exist or were seldom seen on farms 25 years ago. Interstate highways, factories in small cities, subterminal elevators and consolidated schools are examples of the changing landscape in rural America. In times of rapid change, many people are concerned about the future of agriculture, family farms and rural communities. In this paper, recent trends in South Dakota agriculture are presented and analyzed. Major implications of these …

"Stock Index Futures At The Merc", Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
GOOD MORNING AND THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO ADDRESS THIS GROUP. LAST YEAR, WHEN I TALKED TO YOU AT THE SCIA ANNUAL MEETING IN BURGENSTOCK, I TOLD YOU OF THE DYNAMIC GROWTH THE FUTURES INDUSTRY WAS UNDERGOING. I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT THAT GROWTH CONTINUED IN 1983. THE CHICAGO MERCANTILE EXCHANGE HAD ITS SEVENTH CONSECUTIVE RECORD-BREAKING YEAR, TOPPING 1982 TRADING VOLUME BY MORE THAN 13 PER CENT. SINCE 1972 WE HAVE SEEN OUR ANNUAL VOLUME GROW FROM 4.5 MILLION CONTRACTS TO 38.1 MILLION CONTRACTS--A TRULY PHENOMENAL RECORD!

The Outlook For U.S. Agriculture And Agribusiness, Clayton K. Yeutter
Clayton K. Yeutter, United States Secretary of Agriculture: Papers
Not since the 1930s have I been as concerned for the short term future of American agriculture as I am now. Last year's net farm income is estimated at only about $15.5 billion. In the aggregate, and in real term, that is the lowest it has been in decades. Fortunately, on a per capita or per farm basis the numbers are less depressing and, fortunately, they will begin to trend upward again in 1984. But it looks as if export tonnages will decline for the fourth year in a row, and farm land values may also decline for the fourth …

The Extension Programme, W K. Russell, G. K. Palmer
Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4
From the start of the Peel-harvey study in 1976, scientific research and extension have been closely linked. Trials, some involving major drainage works, have been set up on about 30 farms and several field days and seminars have been held.
The Peel-Harvey Study Group anticipates that farmer acceptance of the Department of agriculture's recommendations will reduce the phosphorus input to the estuary by 30 to 40 per cent over the next three to five years. At the same time farmers will benefit from modified cultural practices better suited to the sandy soils of the coastal plain.

At the invitation of the editor, we shall attempt to describe our perceptions as agricultural economists of what is known to us as rural sociology. We should say right off that we are complimented that this invitation has been extended to us. We think that a comparison of our two disciplines has been useful to us, if only to clarify our thinking about our own. We emphasize that our perceptions are based on limited contact, and we have made no systematic study of your discipline. Even to attempt the critique and analysis of the kind requested of us presumes an …

H this paper is the best challenge that can be brought against the New Resource Economics (NRE) and its advocacy for privatization of the public lands, we are likely to see both around for a long time. If there is fallacy in the idea of privatization, it is not illuminated in the arguments of this article. The paper misrepresents what the NRE is, shows little comprehension of the basic concepts on which it rests, and completely reverses the basic nature of the privatization solution. I hope to demonstrate as much in this critique.

Central Bank Of Nigeria Annual Report And Statement Of Accounts For The Year Ended 31st December 1983, Central Bank Of Nigeria
CBN Annual Report
In 1983, Nigeria's economy experienced severe stagflation, with GDP falling by 4.4%, more than the 3.4% decline recorded in 1982. Domestic inflation was 23.2%, more than three times the 7.7% recorded in 1982. The external sector also suffered from the general malaise, with the recorded value of external trade falling from N21.3 billion in 1982 to N17.3 billion in 1983. Agricultural production fell sharply due to severe droughts, bush fires, and diseases/pest infestations in livestock and crops. The volume of primary commercial energy consumed increased, with the index going up by 4.4% in 1983. Inflationary pressures intensified due to the …

Agricultural Processing Possibilities In South Dakota: The Alcohol Fuels Case, Thomas Dobbs
Economics Staff Paper Series (1969 - 2017)
Fuel alcohol production experience and prospects are addressed in this paper as a case example of agricultural processing development in South Dakota. The remarks here are based largely on interdisciplinary research at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in which I have participated over the past four years. This research, coupled with development experiences in fuel alcohol over the past few years, provides insights to prospects and limitations for furthering agricultural processing in South Dakota.
