Using Procedural Justice To Understand, Explain, And Prevent Decision-Making Errors In Forensic Sciences, Scott J. Behson, Roger Koppl Jun 2013

Using Procedural Justice To Understand, Explain, And Prevent Decision-Making Errors In Forensic Sciences, Scott J. Behson, Roger Koppl

Organization Management Journal

It has been estimated that in the United States there are 20,000 false felony convictions a year due to deficiencies in the forensic science and criminal justice systems (Koppl, 2010c). As many of these errors can be attributed to flaws in the processes by which forensic science decisions are made, the principles of procedural justice are a useful lens for analyzing these processes and recommending improved practices. In this secondary analysis of current research, decision-making processes in forensic sciences are analyzed using Leventhal’s six criteria for establishing procedural justice. Specifically, we assesses the current state of forensic science, explain how …

The Emotions Of Change: A Case Study, Kerri S. Kearny, Kayla D. Siegman Jun 2013

The Emotions Of Change: A Case Study, Kerri S. Kearny, Kayla D. Siegman

Organization Management Journal

The purpose of this article is to report on a specific team intervention, a rapidly constructed response to a request for help with a situation that was believed by the chief executive officer (CEO) to have reached a crisis stage. The effort was, of necessity, “on the fly,” and the roles of consultant, participant, researcher, and collaborator were blurred and evolving as answers to the immediate problem were sought. This article presents and reflects on four tools used as a part of the intensive work with the emotional aspects of the team’s experiences of revolutionary organizational change. In extended follow-up …

Institutional Theory And Corporate Sustainability: Determinant Versus Interactive Approaches, Jeffrey Gauthier Jun 2013

Institutional Theory And Corporate Sustainability: Determinant Versus Interactive Approaches, Jeffrey Gauthier

Organization Management Journal

Institutional theory has shifted from determinant to interactive arguments in recent decades, and sustainability scholarship reflects this change. In this article, I consider whether this shift is empirically justified. I review the use of both determinant and interactive arguments in sustainability research and test two sets of competing hypotheses regarding the likelihood of adoption of sustainable practices. Through logistic regression analysis of a sample of 391 U.S.-based firms, I find no support for hypotheses grounded in determinant arguments, but strong support for hypotheses based on interactive arguments. The results of this study offer implications for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers.

Quality Of Care In Community Health Centers And Factors Associated With Performance, Peter Shin, Jessica Sharac, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Julia Paradise Jun 2013

Quality Of Care In Community Health Centers And Factors Associated With Performance, Peter Shin, Jessica Sharac, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Julia Paradise

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

Federally funded community health centers are a key source of comprehensive primary care for medically underserved communities, serving more than 20 million patients in 2011. The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expanded the health center program significantly to help meet the increased demand for health care that is expected as millions of the uninsured gain health coverage, beginning in 2014. Especially given health centers’ growing role, evidence of the quality of care they provide is of keen interest. Most research shows high performance by health centers relative to various standards, but some gaps have also been found, and suitable benchmarks for …

Center for Great Plains Studies: Staff and Fellows Publications

Focus of the Study

From mid-February to mid-May 2012, a research team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln surveyed 506 owners whose agricultural land was protected from development through conservation easements that were funded in part by USDA’s Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program (FRPP). This program “provides matching funds to help purchase development rights to keep productive farm and ranchland in agricultural uses. Working through existing programs, USDA partners with State, tribal, or local governments and non-governmental organizations to acquire conservation easements or other interests in land from landowners, USDA provides up to 50 percent of the fair market easement …

Exploring The Use Of Mobile Technology In Qualitative Inquiry In Africa, Ane T. Johnson Jun 2013

Exploring The Use Of Mobile Technology In Qualitative Inquiry In Africa, Ane T. Johnson

College of Education Departmental Research

In this article I explore how mobile phones may facilitate greater access to participants and higher participation rates in qualitative inquiry in Africa. Qualitative researchers face a number of ethical and procedural challenges when collecting data in the field. But with the explosion of mobile phone usage, many of these obstacles to data collection may be ameliorated, facilitating greater access to participants, to data, and to important findings. I use the example of a research study on the connection between development and higher education at two public universities in Kenya to illustrate how mobile phones played an unexpected role in …

Student Participation At School And Future Civic Engagement: Results From Iccs 2009, Wolfram Schulz, John Ainley, Julian Fraillon

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

Civic and citizenship education aims to prepare young people for their roles as citizens in society. Potential learning outcomes include enhanced knowledge and understanding of civic-related issues as well as student attitudes and behaviours. This paper focuses on the importance of civic participation at school as part of this learning process. Civic participation at school has been emphasized increasingly in the literature in studies of the associations between student participation at school and their expected future engagement in society. The data presented in this paper were collected as part of the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS 2009), which …

Attitudes Towards Political Engagement Among Lower Secondary Students In East Asian Countries: Results From Iccs 2009, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon Jun 2013

Attitudes Towards Political Engagement Among Lower Secondary Students In East Asian Countries: Results From Iccs 2009, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

Based on student survey data from five East Asian countries, the paper contains an analysis of attitudes towards the use of personal connections in politics and towards personal morality among politicians. The first part of the analysis describes the extent and variations of these attitudes which are viewed as of particular relevance within the East Asian context. The second part of the analysis investigates the relationship of these attitudes with student background and school-related variables such as civic knowledge as well as uncovering to what extent these attitudes are related to indicators of future civic engagement among students.

Clash Of Civilization Or Clash Of Newspaper Ideologies? An Analysis Of The Ideological Split In British Newspaper Commentaries On The 2002 Miss World Riots In Nigeria, Farooq Kperogi Jun 2013

Clash Of Civilization Or Clash Of Newspaper Ideologies? An Analysis Of The Ideological Split In British Newspaper Commentaries On The 2002 Miss World Riots In Nigeria, Farooq Kperogi

Faculty Articles

Riots that erupted in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna over a newspaper article that some Muslims interpreted as blaspheming the Prophet Muhammad on account of Nigeria’s decision to host the 2002 edition of the Miss World beauty pageant captured the attention of the media around the world. This article investigates how the British press framed the riots in their opinion columns and editorials. Through an interpretive textual analysis of the opinion pages, the study shows that while the ideological persuasions of left-leaning British press predisposed them to express opinions on the Miss World riots that resonated with what might …

Civic Knowledge And Engagement Among Students From Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Backgrounds, Tim Friedman, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley Jun 2013

Civic Knowledge And Engagement Among Students From Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Backgrounds, Tim Friedman, Wolfram Schulz, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

Civic and citizenship education has the goal of preparing young people for their role as citizens in society through the acquisition of civic knowledge and development of positive attitudes toward engagement. However, globalization and higher levels of migration have led to a re-thinking of the way education should be prepared young people for citizenship in an increasingly globalized world which is no longer only defined by notions of nation states. This paper focuses on the relationship between immigrant background and indicators for civic knowledge and engagement. The data used were collected as part of the IEA International Civic and Citizenship …

Changes In Personal Networks Of Women In Residential And Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment, Meeyoung O. Min, Elizabeth M. Tracy, Hyunsoo Kim, Hyunyong Park, Minkyong Jun, Suzanne Brown, Christopher Mccarty, Alexandre Laudet

Social Work Faculty Publications

Changes in personal network composition, support and structure over 12 months were examined in 377 women from residential (n=119) and intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment (n=258) through face-to-face interviews utilizing computer based data collection. Personal networks of women who entered residential treatment had more substance users, more people with whom they had used alcohol and/or drugs, and fewer people from treatment programs or self-help groups than personal networks of women who entered intensive outpatient treatment. By 12 months post treatment intake, network composition improved for women in residential treatment; however, concrete support was still lower and substance users still more …

Recognizing 'Game Changers' In Extrapolation Models: An Application To Counterinsurgency, Micah Dolcort-Silver Jun 2013

Recognizing 'Game Changers' In Extrapolation Models: An Application To Counterinsurgency, Micah Dolcort-Silver

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent empirical studies suggest insurgencies may be accurately described by aggregated extrapolation models, such that past behavior becomes the best predictor for future action. I argue that aggregated extrapolation models possess two flaws that make it a poor choice for examining insurgencies. First, aggregated extrapolation models ask the wrong question. The more interesting question is to ask when present action is no longer explainable by past behavior. Secondly, aggregate models mask changes that a phenomenon undergoes over time which are only revealed upon disaggregating the data. Starting with a model and findings provided by Neil Johnson, I use casualty data …

Encounter At Comic Con, Carly Jerome Jun 2013

Encounter At Comic Con, Carly Jerome

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Comic books and comic book culture have always been a man's world - until recently. With the growing popularity of graphic novels, movies based off of comic books, and publishers creating more feminist-friendly work, the gender lines are blurring. The short documentary Encounter at Comic Con examines gender stereotypes, and attempts to challenge them. Traveling to Denver's first ever Comic Convention, filmmaker Carly Jerome interviews attendees, professional costume players, and then turns the camera on herself. Her findings are fascinating, but it is her personal journey during the three-day event that is most compelling.

The Organic Beauty Industry: A Gendered Economic Review, Brianna D. Connelly Jun 2013

The Organic Beauty Industry: A Gendered Economic Review, Brianna D. Connelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Organic beauty has grown to a $6 billion dollar industry supplying consumers with products that align with unique social consumption preferences. This thesis explores the historical economic perspective of the traditional beauty industry and the development of the organic beauty industry. Capitalism influenced the traditional beauty industry during the pursuit for profits that lead to jeopardizing customer and environmental safety. Consumers responded to this behavior by founding an organic beauty industry that not only considered social issues, but negated gendered beauty standards in the process. Organic product efficacy has emerged as an issue that must be dealt with by regulation …

Aging And Technology Perspectives Of Web-Based Chronic Disease Self-Management, Jennifer Marie Dickman Portz Jun 2013

Aging And Technology Perspectives Of Web-Based Chronic Disease Self-Management, Jennifer Marie Dickman Portz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many people suffer from chronic disease; however, older adults are at greatest risk of chronic conditions. Although social workers regularly engage with chronically ill older adults, they are not noticeably involved with the research and development of chronic disease management. As such, with recent movements toward health information technology, the efficacy of technology-based chronic disease management is not well established for older adults. Informed by theories of self-management, human development, and technology design, this research investigated lifespan differences of web-based chronic disease self-management. Using a sequential mixed methods design, a secondary data analysis of a diabetes specific web-based self-management intervention …

Remembering Dearfield: A Study Of An Early 20th Century Black Community, Mary Connell Jun 2013

Remembering Dearfield: A Study Of An Early 20th Century Black Community, Mary Connell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the different meanings of Dearfield, an early 20th Century black farming colony in northeastern Colorado, from the way the settlers’ conceived of their community, to the way that it was portrayed by the founder, to the way that it is remembered today. Through analysis of archival data and government records I show that there were two sides of Dearfield, that remembered by most of the settlers, and that portrayed by the founder O.T. Jackson. A magnetometer survey shows that the townsite was not as densely occupied as the common narrative of Dearfield would suggest, indeed many homesteaders …

Three Stories—And A Writer’S Tale: A Creative Writing Case Study Of Workplace Bullying, Margaret H. Vickers Jun 2013

Three Stories—And A Writer’S Tale: A Creative Writing Case Study Of Workplace Bullying, Margaret H. Vickers

Organization Management Journal

I present a creative writing case study of workplace bullying using three stories: Story 1—The Writing Context contextualizes the case study’s development in an Australian higher education institution; Story 2—The Writing Process describes the creative writing process, including interpretation of public domain secondary empirical sources enmeshed with a writer’s imagination; and Story 3—The Writing Product presents a creative writing case study of workplace bullying. Interleaved with these three stories of context, process, and product are fragments of my more reflective and reflexive story—A Writer’s Tale—shared to assist reader understanding of some of the ambiguous, paradoxical, and pernicious outcomes of workplace …

From Initiate To Insider: Renegotiating Workplace Roles And Relations Using Staged Humorous Events, Kirrilly Thompson Jun 2013

From Initiate To Insider: Renegotiating Workplace Roles And Relations Using Staged Humorous Events, Kirrilly Thompson

Organization Management Journal

Like anthropologists entering the field as “outsiders,” initiates to organizations need to learn new cultures as they transition to “insiders” or veterans. Organizational research has identified the role that spontaneous humor plays in this transition. However, there has been little research into “staged” humorous events. At the same time, anthropological practice has identified various ethnographic research techniques designed to expedite entrée to a social group or organization. However, there has been no research on the implications of a colleague delivering an ethnography of a group back to itself. In this article, I detail a strategy that combined humor and the …
