Becoming A Novice Smoker: Initial Smoking Behaviours Among Jor Danian Psychiatric Nurses, Khaldoun Aldiabat, Michael Clinton
Becoming A Novice Smoker: Initial Smoking Behaviours Among Jor Danian Psychiatric Nurses, Khaldoun Aldiabat, Michael Clinton
The Qualitative Report
A better understanding of how male Jordanian psychiatric nurses become smokers and continue the habit mainly at work is necessary if smoking reduction and cessation programs are to help them better manage their smoking behaviours. Here we use a grounded theory approach to describe the factors that influenced the eight nurses in our sample to take up smoking. We use five categories derived from open coding to explain the initial stage in the smoking histories of the nurses. We situate our account of " becoming a novice smoker" within the contextualizing smoking behaviours over time theory we developed from our …
Experiencing The New Orleans Sniping Forty Years Later: A Review Of The Phenomenological Case Study Of Constituting The Other, Natasha Dominguez
Experiencing The New Orleans Sniping Forty Years Later: A Review Of The Phenomenological Case Study Of Constituting The Other, Natasha Dominguez
The Qualitative Report
In this book review I explore the published work of Frances Chaput Waksler entitled The New Orleans Sniper: A Phenomenological Case Study of Constituting the Other. The author examines how the second New Orleans sniper was constituted and then later unconstituted, while following the recommendations of Edmund Husserl’s on exploring the how, in a known situation, the Other was constituted; how people constitute an Other in a particular situation with the use of “their general procedures and resources,” where the existence of the Other is problematic (Waksler, 2012).

Transition To Full-Fledged Inflation Targeting: A Proposed Programme For Implementation By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, Michael O. Ojo
Transition To Full-Fledged Inflation Targeting: A Proposed Programme For Implementation By The Central Bank Of Nigeria, Michael O. Ojo
CBN Occasional Papers
This paper attempts to provide an input into addressing these issues, especially as regards resolving the technical, administrative and practical problems for a transition to inflation targeting as a framework for monetary policy in Nigeria. Specifically, the main purpose of this paper is to outline proposals that would permit the CBN transit successfully to full-fledged inflation targeting (FFIT) for its monetary policy operations. Following the introduction (Section 1), the paper is organized as follows: Section 2 examines the conceptual framework, focusing on the essential elements and modalities of different monetary policy frameworks. Section 3 contains an overview of the experiences …

Stress And Emotions At Work: An Adventure Tourism Guide's Experiences, Susan Houge Mackenzie, John H. Kerr
Stress And Emotions At Work: An Adventure Tourism Guide's Experiences, Susan Houge Mackenzie, John H. Kerr
Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
Little research has identified issues faced by tour guiding professionals and investigations of tour guide experiences have been neglected in favour of tourist experience and behaviour studies. Even less research has focused on adventure guiding experiences and potential sources of stress and emotions in this context. Studies that have investigated adventure guide experiences generally focused on guide-client interactions and sociological accounts of these experiences. Due to these gaps in the literature, and the recognised potential of psychological theories to enhance studies of stress and emotions in tourism settings, this study explored stress and emotions resulting from employer-guide interactions in an …
Recreation Displacement Of Bass Fishermen From Central Coast Lakes, Erin Gray
Recreation Displacement Of Bass Fishermen From Central Coast Lakes, Erin Gray
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
The purpose of this study was to assess the impacts of aquatic invasive species preventative measures on recreation displacement of bass fishermen from Central Coast lakes. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to participants at a local bass fishing tournament. Thirty-six respondents completed the questionnaire. The results indicated that boat inspection procedures do not necessarily cause bass fishermen to displace. This study found that fishermen are likely to avoid recreating at a Central Coast lake in fishing practice conditions rather than in tournament conditions, and are likely to avoid tournaments at their least favorite lake if boat inspection procedures take too …

Perceptions Of Hunting Among Recreation, Parks, And Tourism Administration Students At Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Matthew Cole
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
Hunting is a form of recreation that is also used as a wildlife management strategy. In recent years the sport of hunting has come under fire resulting in heated debate over how it should be regulated. This debate is driven by the way people perceive hunting and these perceptions are influenced by many factors. The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions of hunting and the factors that influence these perceptions amongst Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration (RPTA) students at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. A questionnaire was distributed in three RPTA courses. RPTA students perceive hunting in …

Physical Activity Of Park Visitors In The Sacramento-Central Valley, Jordaine Mcginnity
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
The purpose of the study was to conduct a secondary analysis of the socio-demographics and physical activity levels of park users in the Sacramento-Central Valley region from the 2012 California Opinions and Attitudes Survey on Outdoor Recreation. The study was delimited to the parameters of gathering information via a telephone survey during 2012. The major conclusions indicate: a. the subjects are mostly White or Hispanic, middle-aged to senior status, married, and are part of the lowest socio-economic status, b. park visitation differs between groups as Hispanics visit more often and Non-Hispanics stay longer, and c. physical activity levels differ between …
Influence Of Wine Health Benefit Knowledge And Prior Health Concerns On A Consumer's Willingness To Purchase Wine, Erica Llanos
Influence Of Wine Health Benefit Knowledge And Prior Health Concerns On A Consumer's Willingness To Purchase Wine, Erica Llanos
Agribusiness
With the substantial increase in demand for wine, enhanced knowledge of consumers’ preferences for wine can help give wineries an opportunity to improve sales and bring in new marketing techniques. Over the past several years, the demand for functional food and beverages have increased, which is why promoting the beneficial aspects of red wine when consumed, can be a marketing tool that sets a winery apart from its competitors. This study used over 200 survey responses of individuals located throughout the U.S. in order to determine further information about wine health benefit knowledge in relation to the willingness of consumers …
Sustainability In Zambia, Africa: Examining Partnership Of An Agricultural Business And A Non-Profit Organization, Kaitlin Grace O'Leary
Sustainability In Zambia, Africa: Examining Partnership Of An Agricultural Business And A Non-Profit Organization, Kaitlin Grace O'Leary
Ethnic Studies
The purpose of my study is examining the ways in which agricultural
business is currently supporting and benefitting a non-profit organization.
Through participation of an international agricultural business, Plant Sciences Inc.
(PSI) and a Christian non-profit organization, Lifesong for Orphans, this study
has been a collaborative effort and process, observing agriculture as a means of
sustainability for a non-profit organization. This study has revealed the necessity
of not only updated technology and resources, but has also discovered a continued
necessity of dedicated personnel to the field. A major theme from my
observations was cross-cultural relations, and the ways in which …

Policy Dialogue And Engagement Between Non-Governmental Organizations And Government: A Survey Of Processes And Instruments Of Canadian Policy Workers, Bryan Evans, Adam Wellstead
Department of Social Sciences Publications
Various analysts have raised concerns respecting declining research, evaluation and analytical capacities within public services. Typically, the decline is attributed to reforms associated with neoliberal restructuring of the state and its concomitant managerial expression in New Public Management (NPM). This has given rise to a conceptual shift now commonly captured as a movement from ‘government’ to ‘governance’. Policy advising from a new governance perspective entails an image of a more distributed policy advisory system where a plurality of actors, including non-state actors, engages with government in deliberating policy interventions to address collective problems. The original research presented here suggests that …

An Analysis Of The Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanism And The Real Economy In Nigeria, Eddy C. Ndekwu
An Analysis Of The Monetary Policy Transmission Mechanism And The Real Economy In Nigeria, Eddy C. Ndekwu
CBN Occasional Papers
The study is an empirical analysis which seeks to explain the monetary policy transmission mechanism to the real economy in Nigeria. It examines the process by which the interest rate policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria actually affects the structure of interest rates, credit, aggregate demand and output production and, hence, changes in inflation rate. In the analysis, we review the paradigm of the channels of monetary policy transmission mechanism by studying over two and-half dozen cases of empirical studies in the economic literature. By applying vector auto-regression (VAR) with dynamic logarithmic form and the ordinary least squares (OLS) …

Balancing Inclusion And “Enlightened Understanding” In Designing Online Civic Participation Systems: Experiences From Regulation Room, Cynthia R. Farina, Mary J. Newhart, Josiah Heidt, Jackeline Solivan
Cornell e-Rulemaking Initiative Publications
New forms of online citizen participation in government decision making have been fostered in the United States (U.S.) under the Obama Administration. Use of Web information technologies have been encouraged in an effort to create more back-and-forth communication between citizens and their government. These “Civic Participation 2.0” attempts to open the government up to broader public participation are based on three pillars of open government—transparency, participation, and collaboration. Thus far, the Administration has modeled Civic Participation 2.0 almost exclusively on the Web 2.0 ethos, in which users are enabled to shape the discussion and encouraged to assess the value of …

Art For Social Change: Supporting Art For Community Building, New Philanthropic Orientations In Egypt, Cathrine Cornett
Art For Social Change: Supporting Art For Community Building, New Philanthropic Orientations In Egypt, Cathrine Cornett
Faculty Journal Articles
Taking stock of recent developments in the field of philanthropy concerning the theme of Art for Social Change, this paper shall analyze the new cultural and artistic trends in civic participation and social engagement in Egypt that take their root well before the revolution and could be further emphasized following the Uprisings. The focus will be on new philanthropic orientations fostering community based cultural expressions rather than 'elitist' art forms or already recognized performing artists (concerts, opera, and blockbuster films). The past two years have witnessed a considerable number of artists, intellectuals and cultural activists being at the forefront of …
The Cedar Revolution, Youth Participation, And Youth Organizations In Lebanon’S Post Intifada Civic Engagement Sectarianism And Identity, Omar Bortolazzi
The Cedar Revolution, Youth Participation, And Youth Organizations In Lebanon’S Post Intifada Civic Engagement Sectarianism And Identity, Omar Bortolazzi
Faculty Journal Articles
Civil Society in Lebanon is undoubtedly one of the most vibrant in the Middle East. During the civil war (1975-1990) civil society became more active to compensate for the absence of a strong central government. When the military actions settled down, CSOs started perceiving their role as complementary to that of the government and became even more aware and self-conscious of their capacity, thus rendering NGOs indispensable to the survival of communities. In addition to that, new globalization concepts settled in: sustainable development, participatory democracy, governance, transparency, accountability, health-related issues and environment. At any rate, an important turning point for …
The Impact Of Surf Breaks On Home Prices In Santa Cruz, Ca, Jason Scorse, Frank Reynolds, Amada Sackett
The Impact Of Surf Breaks On Home Prices In Santa Cruz, Ca, Jason Scorse, Frank Reynolds, Amada Sackett
Working Papers
The growing field of “surfonomics” attempts to document surfing’s economic contribution to local and regional communities, as well the consumer surplus surf breaks provide to millions of surfers. To date, no research has examined the extent to which the value of surf breaks is capitalized into home prices. This study uses the hedonic price method with data from three distinct beach-adjacent neighborhoods in Santa Cruz, CA to estimate whether proximity to surf breaks leads to higher home values. We find that after controlling for proximity to the beach, ocean views, the specific characteristics of the homes, and neighborhood effects, that …

The Disparate Neighborhood Impacts Of The Great Recession: Evidence From Chicago, Sonya Williams, George C. Galster, Nandita Verma
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Research Publications
We advance scholarship about how macroeconomic forces differentially manifest themselves across local spaces by developing a holistic conceptual framework and empirical analyses involving multilevel change modeling. Unlike prior work, we examine differential rates of change in neighborhood indicators. We illustrate our approach with Chicago data measuring the crime, housing, and economic domains of neighborhood quality- of-life over the 2000-2009 period. We find that the local dynamic manifestations of macroeconomic cycles were far more nuanced than have been previously observed. Neighborhood indicators moved along distinct trajectories, sometimes but not necessarily tracking each other or the overall business cycle, and they changed …
Development Of A New Experiment Demonstrating Categorical Perception, Kelsey Montzka
Development Of A New Experiment Demonstrating Categorical Perception, Kelsey Montzka
Student Research Initiative
In this project, we have created an online portal containing a multi-faceted demonstration of categorical perception. We utilized the 2I2AFC (two-interval, two alternative forced choice) stimulus presentation method which should elicit more categorical results from students, helping to better demonstrate the phenomenon (Gerrits & Schouten, 2004), and provided different acoustic cues illustrating CP. In addition to illustrations of CP for F2 formant transition, the new online portal is used to illustrate voice onset timing (VOT; the cue that distinguishes between the sounds [b] and [p]), as well as how contextual factors and participants’ linguistic backgrounds affect CP. The contextual factors …
