Attachment Behaviors As Mediators Between Family-Of-Origin Quality And Couple Communication Quality In Marriage: Implications For Couples Therapy, Darin Justin Knapp Jun 2013

Attachment Behaviors As Mediators Between Family-Of-Origin Quality And Couple Communication Quality In Marriage: Implications For Couples Therapy, Darin Justin Knapp

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the mediating impact of couples' attachment behaviors on the relationship between poor quality family-of-origin experiences and marital communication quality. The couple data for this study was collected from the Relationship Evaluation (RELATE) database (see www.relate-institute.org). An Actor Partner Interdependence Model using structural equation modeling was used to evaluate 261 marriage relationships. Results indicated that the relationships between family-of-origin experiences and communication quality are significantly related, with more family-of-origin problems associated with poorer positive communication skills. When attachment behaviors (accessibility, responsiveness, and engagement) were added to the model, it significantly mediated the relationship. Implications for clinicians treating couples …

Perception Of Maximum Stepping And Leaping Ability, Brian Michael Day Jun 2013

Perception Of Maximum Stepping And Leaping Ability, Brian Michael Day

Theses and Dissertations

To successfully perform everyday behaviors, people must be able to perceive affordances.

Two general categories of affordances have been investigated: body-scaled affordances depend on geometric properties (e.g., arm length) and action-scaled affordances depend on dynamic properties (e.g., maximum running speed, body compressibility, etc.). The fact that these affordances depend on different kinds of relationships between animal and environment, suggests that body scaled affordances and action scaled affordances may be qualitatively different. We investigated this hypothesis by using a transfer of calibration paradigm. In particular, we investigated whether improvements in perception of maximum stepping distance (a body scaled affordance) transferred to …

Building Co-Operation Between Tourism And Culture In The West Of Ireland, Bernadette Quinn, Ziene Mottiar, Theresa Ryan Jun 2013

Building Co-Operation Between Tourism And Culture In The West Of Ireland, Bernadette Quinn, Ziene Mottiar, Theresa Ryan

Conference papers

Redressing regional imbalance is now a key challenge in Ireland. Dublin is the destination of choice for more than two fifths of the market and the number of visitors holidaying outside of the Dublin region has declined significantly between 2003 and 2009. One way of redressing regional imbalance is to harness the tourism potential of the cultural sector. Spread throughout the regions is a wealth of cultural activity and a well developed infrastructure of venues staging vibrant arts activity of international calibre, be it in visual arts, film, literature or the performing arts. This activity engages 2.3 million Irish citizens …

Engaging In Cross-Cultural Services : A Journey To Global Citizenship, Lai Han, Cinnie Ng Jun 2013

Engaging In Cross-Cultural Services : A Journey To Global Citizenship, Lai Han, Cinnie Ng

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

There are two parts in this paper. The first part is to identify and discuss three pairs of concepts: “National Citizenship and Global Citizenship”, “Legal Citizenship and Moral Citizenship”, and “Moral Citizenship and International / Cross Cultural Service-Learning”. Citizenship involves the concept of rights and responsibilities of a person in a country usually having a legitimate government. However, such “legal contract” between the government and the citizens does not exist in the global perspective. Global citizenship education is more appealing to the people’s inner goodwill with moral values and ethical system for the pursuit of a just and harmonious world …

Factors Affecting The Success Of Service-Learning : A Reflection On Introducing Service-Learning Programmes In University Curriculum, Kai Yan Choi

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service-learning is regarded as one of major endeavours to inspire students through practising their professional knowledge in the forms of voluntary service, and in turn, feedback to their conceptual knowledge. In this paper, I am going to identify factors affecting students’ consideration and participation in service-learning programmes at the University of Macau. I will report findings drawn from in-depth interviews with sociology students who attended the Practicum course in 2012/13, and other students in residential college. Influences brought up by peers, family, personal aspiration, and prior schooling experiences are key to the success of service-learning. Ambivalent role of general social …

Measuring Learning Outcomes Of Students In Service-Learning Considering Diversity And Degree Of Experiences, Enrique G. Oracion, Emervencia L. Ligutom

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Although Dan Butin (2011) has been critical of the place of service-learning in higher education institutions as a social movement and an intellectual movement, he actually had opened up four modes of service-learning outcomes of students exposed to this pedagogy that makes it a fertile field for scholarly research in education, in particular, and the social sciences, in general. These modes of learning which he categorized into technical, cultural, political and anti-foundational do not only suggest the diversity of learning that is offered by service-learning, but this typology also points out to the degree or different levels of learning that …

Program Evaluation And Assessment : Outcomes Of Service-Learning And A Research Agenda, Helen Thimmayya Jun 2013

Program Evaluation And Assessment : Outcomes Of Service-Learning And A Research Agenda, Helen Thimmayya

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

The construction of the concept of Service Learning is a visionary move that evolves from the perception that in serving others’ needs one benefits oneself in a tangible sense. This reiterates the democratic interdependence of human beings. Weaving it into the academic experience of students imposes a systematic structure which makes it quantifiable. Hence, evaluation. There is no dearth today of models of Service Learning application or of suggested tools for evaluation. The challenge is, however, in the uniqueness of each SL experience. The first challenge in creating an evaluation design is the pre-SL activity process. A circle of stake-holders …

Serving Effectively Through Service-Learning : Enhancing Service-Learning Programs That Promote Innovations For Inclusive Development, Leland Joseph Dela Cruz

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

A number of service-learning projects have been undertaken at the Ateneo de Manila University to promote innovations for inclusive development. Some of these projects introduce innovations to particular marginalized communities or social development organizations. Others support innovations coming from these communities or organizations. While these projects have been helpful for students' social formation, only a few have been institutionalized by the service-learning client. This paper assesses the factors that account for the success or failure of these service-learning activities. Underlying the analysis is a framework for understanding the role of universities and service-learning in promoting these innovations as well as …

Hashtag Politics: The Polyphonic Revolution Of #Twitter, Bud Davis Jun 2013

Hashtag Politics: The Polyphonic Revolution Of #Twitter, Bud Davis

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

Social media has revolutionized how citizens communicate and interact with each other. President Barack Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign notably demonstrated just how impactful online interconnectivity could be in reaching out to key demographics. More specifically, Twitter has become increasingly popular in achieving communication with constituents while enabling voters to become citizen journalists and active participants in the political process. This paper seeks to trace the evolution of Twitter as a political resource and determine what influence it has in enhancing and inhibiting political communication. By drawing on Kristeva’s concept of intertextuality, I argue that Twitter’s unique functionality contains the potential …

The Effect Of Newer Communication Technologies On Relationship Maintenance And Satisfaction In Long-Distance Dating Relationships, Allie Kirk

Pepperdine Journal of Communication Research

This paper explores the influence of computer-mediated communication (CMC) on long-distance dating relationships (LDDRs), and how new technologies such as Skype and Facebook have evolved as important platforms in relationship maintenance and relational satisfaction. Twenty participants participated in a closed-ended questionnaire that included a scale to measure relational satisfaction as developed by Hendrick (1988), as well as Stafford and Canary’s (1992) revised relational maintenance scale. Results of the study showed that Skype has become the preferred medium for communication in LDDRs over email, where previous research claimed email as a dominant platform of CMC.

Service-Learning Partnerships : 'A Springboard' For Enhanced Experiential Learning And Transformation, Betsy Selvakumar, Mary Pearl Ravikumar

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service learning is a teaching pedagogy wherein a student participates in a thoughtfully organised community based programme, with an academic orientation. This technique helps to enhance classroom teaching- learning experience, as the student strives to meet the need of the community. Service learning experience can be enriched by building effective partnerships with community based organisations. SL serves as a platform to support locally established initiatives of governmental and non-governmental organisations without displacing existing workers. For the institution that offers SL and the staff coordinating the programme, it is a meaningful exercise to thoughtfully consider potential partners who could assist in …

The School of Nursing at the University of The Free State (UFS) in South Africa (SA) has been advocating service learning and engagement with communities since the late nineties. Today the UFS is truly an engaged African university where faculty members use cross-border higher education to build capacity. Service learning fosters generic and discipline specific skills in students as well as empowers local communities. Curriculum based engagement in communities is one of the fundamental aspects of the service learning pedagogy. One of the key challenges, in order to provide students with appropriate learning opportunities, was to build sustainable partnerships where …

Civic Virtue Construction In Social Transformation : The Practice Of Service Learning In Sysu, Jiangang Zhu, Quan Hong

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

The imbalance state between development of market economy system and series of negative social events reflected a lack of civic mindedness today. Civic morality construction should play a significant role in this social transformation period. Specifically, civic education should develop students in three dimensions, right-responsibility awareness, tolerance, and spirit of volunteer. As an essential part of civic education, service-learning is to combine academic knowledge with social service, furthermore to achieve these objectives. Although, service-learning is adopted widely and developed a series of mature theories in the West, especially in America, the spread of service-learning in China is still in its …

Building Partnership In Service-Learning : Some Reflections, Nirmala Jeyaraj

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service-Learning is a proven pedagogy for holistic learning and is practiced across the globe by educators both at secondary and tertiary levels. Different models and methods have been developed and adopted to suit one’s educational system, discipline of the learner, socio-cultural context and needs of the community. However the basic philosophy of service learning to mutually benefit the learner and the community remains the same. The success of S-L depends largely upon the partnership involved in the learning process. At micro level (within an educational institution) academic service learning involves two major players other than the community namely, the teacher …

Service-Learning And Community Partnerships : A Study Of Hong Kong Secondary School Teachers, Sek Yum Ngai, Chau Kiu Cheung, Kwok Bong Chan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Service-learning is becoming an increasingly popular approach to achieving both the personal and academic goals of students and the broader goals of civic responsibility and social justice in communities. Hence, it is essential to consider the important role played by community partners in supporting this kind of experiential education. Reciprocity between schools and communities has been espoused as a core principle of good practice in service-learning. However, the paucity of studies of community partnerships indicates that they are only beginning to be understood and thus require further in-depth investigation. Drawing upon five focus group interviews with 22 secondary school teachers …

Responding To Communities’ Information Needs : Community-Based Research As Service-Learning, Timothy K. Stanton, Viria Vichit-Vadakan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Most practitioners conceive of service-learning as combining student involvement in service-oriented tasks with and for communities with structured educational activities designed to develop their knowledge, character, and/or social skills and capacities. Whatever the goals for students these tasks tend to be of a direct service kind – e.g., tutoring, teaching classes, assisting the elderly, environmental clean-up, etc. Occasionally these tasks will also include administrative or public policy-related work. Rarely, however, does service-learning venture into the realm of research. This interactive workshop will explore the goals, background, characteristics, and current practices of research as a form of service-learning, including its benefits …

As service-learning programs are becoming more popular with universities around the world, it is important to ensure that the programs’ participants maintain an ethical relationship with their community partners. Primary amongst the student groups’ ethical duties is to not impose unexpressed needs upon community partners. This paper presents an experience of a service-learning project in a larger service-learning program under the Water and Health in Limpopo (WHIL) research collaborative between the University of Venda (UNIVEN) and University of Virginia (UVA). The project takes place in the village of Tshapasha, South Africa, where an interdisciplinary team of service-learners composed of students …
