The Role Of Emotion In Environmental Decision Making, Hannah Dietrich
The Role Of Emotion In Environmental Decision Making, Hannah Dietrich
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Given the environmental concerns of our planet, it is imperative to consider issues of environmental sustainability. Researchers argue that the most serious environmental problems are not merely issues of science, but that of individual behavior. Solutions, therefore, must consider the role of the individual—how one can change his/her behaviors to be more environmentally conscious. The experience of negative or positive emotions, may impact not only people’s experiences with the environment, but also their tendency to engage in pro-environmental behavior. The present study sought to experimentally investigate the role of emotion and information on pro-environmental behavior change. Results indicate that neither …
Couples' Experience Of Attachment-Related Change In Context Of Couple-Centered, Enactment-Based Therapy Process And Therapist-Centered Therapy Process: A Qualitative Study, James Waid Ballard
Couples' Experience Of Attachment-Related Change In Context Of Couple-Centered, Enactment-Based Therapy Process And Therapist-Centered Therapy Process: A Qualitative Study, James Waid Ballard
Theses and Dissertations
Enactments consist of episodes of direct couple engagement being carefully monitored and coached by the therapist. Enactments have been identified and studied as a potential common factor in marriage and family therapy. Attachment security is considered to be a foundational marker of marital health. This study explored what role enactments play in promoting attachment-related outcomes in therapy. A qualitative group hermeneutic approach was used to analyze the interviews of twelve participants (six couples) who had participated in six experimental sessions: three sessions with a preponderance of therapist-centered process and three of enactment-based process. The results of this analysis provide a …
Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill: Thirty Years Of Police Literature, Jennifer Noe
Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill: Thirty Years Of Police Literature, Jennifer Noe
Publications and Research
This study applies the methodology of content analysis to 30 years of law-enforcement literature to determine whether online access to scholarly research in social work and mental health made a difference in police policy toward the mentally ill. Keywords from the controlled vocabulary of these fields were found in the body of content analyzed prior to easily accessible online resources in 1997 , yet the number of articles on the subject grew from approximately one per year prior to 1998 to nearly five per year by 2011. The imprint of these two fields from outside of law enforcement was discernible …
Telling Their Stories: The Use Of Autoethnography As An Instructional Tool In An Introductory Research Course, Henrietta Williams Pinchon
Telling Their Stories: The Use Of Autoethnography As An Instructional Tool In An Introductory Research Course, Henrietta Williams Pinchon
The Qualitative Report
This paper focuses on the use of autoethnography as an instructional tool in introductory research courses. Since many students fear research courses in graduate education programs, many of them build up paralyzing anxieties that prevent them from completing the courses and/or their programs. To address this , I propose the use of autoethnography as an instructional tool. This form of inquiry will be useful by allowing students to (a) explore how personal experiences influence their research (e.g., subjectivity, assumptions), (b ) identify gaps in the mainstream literature (e.g., is this story being told?), (c ) use various data collection strategies …

The Qualitative Report
K - 12 online learning at the K - 12 level has been around for approximately two decades and is continuing to grow. While researchers have researched a variety of issues related to K - 12 online learning, there has been little published on the student experience in web - based learning environments. In this article, two doctoral students were tasked with analyzing existing data, then representing and situating their findings in a format other than the traditional “results” and “discussion” sections found in a typical six - section journal manuscript. One student created an image that focused upon the …

The Great Transition Of Scholarly Communication At The Thomas G. Carpenter Library, Alice Eng, Cynthia J. Jordan
The Great Transition Of Scholarly Communication At The Thomas G. Carpenter Library, Alice Eng, Cynthia J. Jordan
Library Faculty Presentations & Publications
Many factors are changing the ways academic libraries are disseminating scholarly communication. Libraries must meet new expectations of how scholarly information is communicated and delivered to students and faculty. Due to shrinking budgets, Florida universities' libraries are tasked with providing information within a defined monetary amount. Open access journals, institutional repositories, and libguides are a way to offset the cost of expensive subscriptions. We would like to present how the Thomas G. Carpenter Library at the University of North Florida contributes to the UNF community by providing and presenting alternative electronic resources while remaining within a limited budget.

Strategizing For Public Policy: The Information Literacy State Proclamation Project, Sharon A. Weiner, Lana W. Jackman, Emily Prause
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This paper describes a project designed to raise the awareness of policymakers about the importance of information literacy to achieve societal goals. Issues benefit from the governmental support, prioritization, mandates, and funding that can result when there is policy behind them. Studies indicate that many people lack the ability to draw on quality sources of information for a variety of purposes. Attention by policymakers would accelerate the inclusion of information literacy in settings such as education, workforce training, citizenship preparation, and lifelong learning. One way to raise awareness of policymakers is by recommending a proclamation to government executives.
University Library Web Sites In Kerala As Marketing Tools: An Evaluation, Suresh Kumar Pk
University Library Web Sites In Kerala As Marketing Tools: An Evaluation, Suresh Kumar Pk
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Abstract
University libraries are undergoing a major metamorphisms consequent to the development of Information Communication Technology. Digital as a medium for marketing is likely to dominate in this decade due to the fact that digital became the predominant channel for accessing content. Many of the university libraries are now trying to use their websites for distributing documents and selling images and full texts online. Web marketing strategy aims to help the university library optimize the use of its information products and services. So it is indispensable to study the importance of library websites and to explore the reality and potential …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Academic libraries in the modern era are developing in every aspect of the information management processes with the help of increasing and innovative utility of modern technologies. The use of Information Communication Technology (I CT) in academic libraries helps both the library staff and the users in many ways in terms of accuracy, time, labor, space, and money to some extent. Generally, I CT deals with all the uses of digital technology, which already exist to help individuals, businesses and organisations for using information. The study conducted to investigate how university students and teachers communicate using various communication media and …
Psychotherapy Outcome For Eating Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Julia Bryn Hubbard
Psychotherapy Outcome For Eating Disorders: A Meta-Analysis, Julia Bryn Hubbard
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to summarize psychotherapy outcomes for eating disorders using meta-analysis. Psychotherapy was defined as any psychosocial treatment including face-to-face therapy, self-help, and Internet approaches. All primary studies, meeting inclusion/exclusion criteria from 1980 to 2010, were included. Results suggested that individuals treated with active treatments demonstrate better outcomes than those in control conditions (d= 0.33, p <.01, 95% CI [0.19-0.46]). CBT was the most often occurring treatment in the primary studies and a small effect, favoring CBT, was found when the treatment was compared to all other active treatments (d = 0.16, p = .02, 95% CI [0.03-0.28]). Internet and self-help approaches continue to show promise with Internet treatments demonstrating superior outcomes to control conditions (d = 0.54, p <.01, 95% CI [0.19-0.90]). More research is needed to determine whether these approaches can suffice as stand-alone treatments or if they are best used in addition to already well-established approaches (i.e., individual CBT). The meta-analysis also explored whether treatment type, outcome measure, diagnosis, attrition, and diagnostic severity moderate treatment effect. Finally, the meta-analysis updated and improved upon previous meta-analyses by focusing on randomized controlled trials, including all diagnoses of eating disorder, only combining effect sizes from similar conditions, including all possible studies that meet inclusion criteria, computing and comparing effect sizes for outcome measures beyond those considered primary to eating disorder treatment, and also addressing outcomes for all brands of psychotherapy including traditional talk therapy, self-help, and Internet approaches.

As the Hong Kong society continues to promote the culture of caring for the needy, more students are encouraged to participate in voluntary services during their primary and secondary school study. These students have experiences to serve the needy in forms of social gathering activities, tour guiding & language tutorial…etc, which enhance their confidence and motivation to attempt service learning projects in future.
Based on surveyed figures of the students participated in different service learning projects in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, at the early stage of the projects, it is revealed that these students would easily overlook the dimension …

The state Kerala is blessed with scenic beauty and appears evergreen throughout the year as it regularly receives South West and North West monsoons. The wetlands of Kerala provide myriad of biological functions lending ecological and economic sustainability to the region. However, due to immense biotic interferences, such habitats are under threat, and have shrunken in size considerably. The present work is an attempt to develop awareness in students, farmers and commoners on the degree of habitat destruction; and to implement strategies for eco-restoration of specific sites under study. Ten students of graduate stream and two from post graduate level …

Higher education has a long standing commitment to serving society. From the earlier days the objective of higher education has been for developing professionals who serve society, engaging learned individuals in civic responsibility, and creating leaders to head industry, community organizations, and government. Today we see higher education’s role in serving the public good is becoming defined narrowly as the education of students for the workforce and promote material civilization. Higher education’s current commitment needs to be rethought and refocused to meet the current needs of society. Working with the Community has been a regular practice in Teacher Education. The …

The IC is an independent, non-profit organization with the objective of promoting intercultural exchange around the world through a commitment to service-learning and community engagement. From the general observation of the fast development of intercultural sensitivity of the students participating in our service-learning program, in 2004 the IC faculty designed an instructional approach called Full-immersion: Culture, Content, Service (FICCS) (Bracci & Filippone 2009). In 2008 the IC faculty designed the Reflective Intercultural Assessment Model (RICA) (Biagi et al. 2012) to measure the unique competence resulting from the use of the FICCS approach: Reflective Intercultural Competence, or RIC (idem).

Service-Learning (S-L) has been proven in many studies to be a good means for promoting university students’ civic / community engagement (e.g. Vickers, Harris & McCarthy, 2004; Astin et al., 2006). A vast majority of the services in S-L courses in Higher Education take place in partnering service agencies and communities they serve, such as elderly homes and social enterprises. The idea that university campus is a community with unique needs and therefore a potential service site is often neglected. There are indeed social needs within university campuses, such as food waste (e.g. UC Berkeley, 2012; The City University of …
