Assessing Anasazi Mobility Through Ceramics, Alan B. Gelder, Dr. Joel C. Janetski Sep 2013

Assessing Anasazi Mobility Through Ceramics, Alan B. Gelder, Dr. Joel C. Janetski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There are some compelling questions about variations in the subsistence patterns of the Anasazi that are still unanswered. It is possible that within the Escalante Valley of south-central Utah, the Anasazi practiced a more mobile lifestyle than is thought to be common—camping at some distance from their permanent settlements. Suggestive evidence comes from the ceramic remains of the archaeological site of North Creek Shelter (42GA5863). While the full analysis is incomplete, it appears that the Anasazi used this temporary site.

A Brief Analysis Of Chinese Foreign Aid, Steve Kapfer, Dr. Eric Hyer Sep 2013

A Brief Analysis Of Chinese Foreign Aid, Steve Kapfer, Dr. Eric Hyer

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As development continues to remain a stubborn, yet salient problem to address, an increasing number of researchers are trying to determine what factors affect development. One of the most popular means of promoting development is through official development aid (ODA) because it is thought to provide the necessary capital and technical know-how needed to spur development. However, the benefits of ODA are increasingly being called into question as economic analysis shows marginal growth rates in many targeted developing countries, and in those targeted countries aid produces decreasing marginal returns.

Using The Federalist To Better Understand The Constitution: Does Publius’S “Split Personality” Pose A Problem?, Chris Bates, Dr. Brent Gilchrist Sep 2013

Using The Federalist To Better Understand The Constitution: Does Publius’S “Split Personality” Pose A Problem?, Chris Bates, Dr. Brent Gilchrist

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Considered by many to be the seminal work in American political theory, The Federalist has long stood as one of the most important commentaries on the American Constitution and constitutional system. Despite the work’s near canonical status, however, a number of authors have questioned its value as an instrument for understanding and interpreting the Constitution. One of the most important challenges to The Federalist’s interpretive value comes from Douglass Adair’s and Alpheus Thomas Mason’s split personality thesis, which claims that Hamilton’s and Madison’s respective papers espouse fundamentally different and even contradictory views. If true, the split personality thesis poses significant …

Self-Determination And Independence Movements In Europe: The European Union’S Role, Jeannine Plamondon, Dr. Danny Damron Sep 2013

Self-Determination And Independence Movements In Europe: The European Union’S Role, Jeannine Plamondon, Dr. Danny Damron

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The European Union (EU) was created to bring European countries together, but could it also have the effect of breaking countries apart? This was the question I chose to evaluate for my research. I worked as an intern with the Scottish National Party (SNP), a political party seeking independence for Scotland from the United Kingdom, in the European Parliament in Brussels Belgium. On the European level, the SNP combines with other independence-seeking parties from various minority nations across Europe, such as the Catalonians and Basques in Spain, the Welsh in the United Kingdom, the Flemish in Belgium, etc. Together these …

Wives Of Rural Mexican Migrants: Gender Roles And Mental Health?, Jared Wilkerson, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki Sep 2013

Wives Of Rural Mexican Migrants: Gender Roles And Mental Health?, Jared Wilkerson, Dr. Niwako Yamawaki

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Rural Mexican communities near Irapuato, Guanajuato are an ideal place to discover the effects of migration on a population. This area of Mexico contains many villages known as “sending communities” due to a high number of migrants who mostly travel to and from the United States. These sending communities are unique in that those who leave are almost solely men and almost solely temporary migrants—that is, even if they are married or have children, they migrate alone, and not with the intent of long-term residence or attempts at citizenship. When men leave wives and children at home to become migrant …

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Higher Education On Likelihood Of Employment In Armenia, Christopher Palmer, Dr. Frank Mcintyre Sep 2013

An Analysis Of The Impact Of Higher Education On Likelihood Of Employment In Armenia, Christopher Palmer, Dr. Frank Mcintyre

Journal of Undergraduate Research

This paper employs microdata from the 2001 Armenian National Census to consider how varying levels of higher education affect the likelihood that an individual is employed in Armenia. The analysis concludes that the effect of incomplete undergraduate education on employment status is not statistically different from the effect of terminating one’s education after graduating high school. I consider several theoretical improvements on the standard probit and logit models using an instrumental variables approach and flexible distributions. Armenia is an interesting case study of economic contrasts. While Armenia’s double-digit economic growth suggests that it is adapting to the new market economy, …

Effectiveness Of A Cbt Intervention For Persistent Insomnia And Hypnotic Dependency In An Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, Hannah Taylor Sep 2013

Effectiveness Of A Cbt Intervention For Persistent Insomnia And Hypnotic Dependency In An Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, Hannah Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research supports the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) in patients with comorbid psychiatric diagnoses; however, questions remain about the effectiveness of CBT-I due to the fact that previous studies excluded patients with significant psychiatric symptoms and comorbid diagnoses. This study begins to address this gap in the insomnia literature by testing a five-session CBT-I intervention in a diverse sample of patients receiving mental health treatment in an outpatient psychiatry clinic (N=23) who continue to experience chronic insomnia despite receiving pharmacological treatment for sleep. Participants were randomized to CBT-I (n=13) or a treatment as usual control group (n=10). …

Competition In Hong Kong’S Banking Industry, Lai Yee Chu, Yue Cui, Nan Ye, Yuelin Yan Sep 2013

Competition In Hong Kong’S Banking Industry, Lai Yee Chu, Yue Cui, Nan Ye, Yuelin Yan

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

This paper tests the competition structure of Hong Kong’s banking industry using the Panzar-Rosse approach and a panel dataset of the largest 20 banks in Hong Kong from 1998 to 2011. The estimation results showed that the competitive pressures were equal across time and across the different sizes of the banks in Hong Kong’s banking industry. Competitive pressures may heighten in the near future as banks will seek to gain competitive edge and they can do so through mergers and acquisitions. Regulations are also slowly being relaxed after the financial crisis in order to boost the economy and more advances …

Assess The Crisis Management Effort Following The Outbreak Of The Subprime Crisis, Yuchen Luo Sep 2013

Assess The Crisis Management Effort Following The Outbreak Of The Subprime Crisis, Yuchen Luo

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

In this paper, I employ a linear regression model to examine the effectiveness of four microeconomic variables, namely government debt, GDP growth rate, household consumption growth rate and government spending growth rate, in stimulating economic growth. In order to test the effectiveness of expansionary fiscal policy in different macro-environments, countries were first partitioned into low and high government debt categories. In addition, raw dataset was partitioned into two time periods, respectively, representing normal macroeconomic years and recession years. My results suggest that countercyclical government spending has been an effective stimulation tool but its effect was more significant in countries of …

Can The Euro Rival The United States Dollar And Become The World Currency?, Kar Wai Man, Feissal Thomas Germais Mombo Paraga Apengue, Weixin Zhang, Yiqing Tu, Yuan Yuan

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Due to the outstanding performance of the Euro since its advent, the public may wonder whether the Euro would, one day, replace the US dollar (USD) which has all along been a force to be reckoned with all around the world. By tracing the chain of contributions the USD (the United States of America) and the Euro (European Union) have made to the world economy in the past and at present, we hope to arrive at some conclusions. However, the paper will give primacy to predicting the future trends for them separately.

Democracy And Economic Growth: A Perspective Of Cooperation, Menghan Yang, Li Zhang Sep 2013

Democracy And Economic Growth: A Perspective Of Cooperation, Menghan Yang, Li Zhang

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Does democracy cause higher economic growth? We build a model taking culture and interpersonal cooperation into account and find that democracy increases economic productivity through giving people more equal rights, which allows people to build a larger interpersonal network so that they can reduce investment risk and employ high-productivity (high-risk) methods in production.

Does Okun’S Law Still Hold Today?, Michael Jeffrey White, Lai Yee Chu Sep 2013

Does Okun’S Law Still Hold Today?, Michael Jeffrey White, Lai Yee Chu

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Arthur Okun claimed that when a country’s unemployment rate fell, the GDP expanded. This paper investigates the claim of Arthur Okun and the effect of unemployment rates and GDP of a country on each other. Data from three countries, namely, USA, Japan, and France, were tested to see if there was a causal link between the two variables. It was found that the proposed law of Arthur Okun did not hold. In the USA, there was a two way causality link but different directions of effect. France and Japan did not have a causal link between the two variables.

Impact Of Change In Exchange Rate On Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence From China, Weifeng Jin, Qing Zang Sep 2013

Impact Of Change In Exchange Rate On Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence From China, Weifeng Jin, Qing Zang

Lingnan Journal of Banking, Finance and Economics

Based on the monthly data of foreign direct investment (FDI) in China and the index of real effective exchange rate (REER) of RMB during Jan 1997 to Sep 2012, we develop a statistical model in this paper to test the impact of changes in exchange rate in the host country on FDI, with reference to international and domestic research. According to the results of the empirical test, the appreciation of RMB promotes FDI after the reforms in the exchange rate regime in 2005 and this phenomenon is a result from the change in the type of FDI into China in …

Motor System Markers Of Depression Severity, Mary Jacobson, Hailee Houston, Andrew Slifkin Sep 2013

Motor System Markers Of Depression Severity, Mary Jacobson, Hailee Houston, Andrew Slifkin

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

Physiological health has been linked to increased complexity in the output of physiological systems. For example, as the severity of cardiac disease increases, EKG time series show reduced complexity. The present study investigated the relation between mental health and complexity in motor output. In particular, we tested the hypothesis that depression severity—as measured by the Symptom Checklist-90-R (SCL-90-R)—should be negatively correlated with motor output complexity. Measurements of motor output were obtained when participants generated long sequences of movements in a cyclical aiming task. The resultant movement amplitude time series were submitted to spectral analysis, from which an index of motor …

History And Archaeology At Irishtown Bend: Life In A Nineteenth Century Cleveland Irish Community, Taliesin Haugh, Geoffrey Horn, Arvin Mathur, Phillip Wanyerka

Undergraduate Research Posters 2013

To most Clevelanders, the west bank of the Flats brings to mind the bustle of busy nightclubs or the rusting facades of Cleveland’s now fading steel industry. Few people would generally associate this area with archaeology, let alone remember that during the nineteenth century this area was home to one of Cleveland’s earliest and most influential ethnic communities. Known as Irishtown Bend, many Irish immigrants made their way to this close-knit, working class neighborhood of small ramshackle houses crammed closely together along the narrow bluffs of the Cuyahoga River. Most of the arriving Irish immigrants who came to Cleveland beginning …

Lexterm Lexicography & Terminology Management, Logan Kearsley, Dr. Alan Melby Sep 2013

Lexterm Lexicography & Terminology Management, Logan Kearsley, Dr. Alan Melby

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Lexicography (the compilation of dictionaries and study of relations between lexical items) and terminology (the study of technical terms used in specific fields or contexts) are conceptually very similar, both being based in the study and categorization of lexical items in human language. Both dictionaries and termbases are essential tools for second-language learners and professional translators and contain much of the same kinds of information on definitions, grammatical characteristics, and usages of words. Till now, however, tools for creating and curating dictionaries and termbases have existed largely in isolation from each other, with no simple way of sharing data between …

The 2013-2016 strategic plan challenges Musselman Library to think about ways in which the library can further support its community of learners. This plan builds upon the core issues of services, collections, learning, and access that were identified in 2007 and recognizes the growth accomplished in these areas.

In early 2013, Robin Wagner, Director of Library Services, formed the Strategic Planning Steering Committee in order to develop a plan to guide Musselman Library’s priorities …

Does Monitor Peptide Produce Anorexia Through The Release Of Endogenous Cholecystokinin?, Cory A. Talbot, Dr. Gregory N. Ervin Sep 2013

Does Monitor Peptide Produce Anorexia Through The Release Of Endogenous Cholecystokinin?, Cory A. Talbot, Dr. Gregory N. Ervin

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is a gut hormone released following the ingestion of a meal. It was first shown in 1973 by Gibbs et al. that administration of exogenous CCK-8 (CCK-8 is the smallest part of the CCK molecule that possesses its biological activity) before a meal leads to a decrease in food intake and the onset of satiety-like behaviors in rats.1 Extensive evidence now exists demonstrating that exogenous CCK-8 can produce a selective decrease in food intakes in humans, as well. By using CCK receptor antagonists to block endogenous CCK or trypsin inhibitors to elevate released endogenous CCK, some evidence is …

Age Of First Marriage And Economic Outcomes, Riley Wilson, Dr. Joseph Price Sep 2013

Age Of First Marriage And Economic Outcomes, Riley Wilson, Dr. Joseph Price

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Research has consistently found that marriage is associated with a number of positive economic, social and health outcomes (Korenman and Neumark, 1991; Loh, 1996). However, despite the many observed benefits of marriage at a point in time, there is a general belief that economic outcomes will be even higher if young adults wait until they are older to get married. This has led to a dramatic increase over the last decade in the average age of first marriage. Census data shows that the median age of first marriage in the United States United States from 1971 to 2011 increased dramatically …

Parent Education Para Mi? : The Relevance And Usefulness Of Mainstream Parent Education For Latino Parents, Gabriela Bustamante Sep 2013

Parent Education Para Mi? : The Relevance And Usefulness Of Mainstream Parent Education For Latino Parents, Gabriela Bustamante

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study involved the development of a parent education curriculum derived from the evidence-based parenting literature, and the pilot testing a single intervention from this curriculum to compare responses of Latino and non-Latino parents to interventions originally designed for the mainstream culture. Parents also received and responded to an overview of the curriculum as a whole. It was expected that Latino parents would rate the curriculum content and the single intervention as less relevant and useful than their non-Latino counterparts; and would rate instructor modeling, and opportunities for support as more relevant and useful than non-Latinos. The pilot test was …
