The Irony Of Choice, Cam T. Nguyen Sep 2013

The Irony Of Choice, Cam T. Nguyen

SURGE

We are having the inevitable late night conversation. You talk about your eventual wedding, your marriage to the person you love, the timeline you’ve created for yourself, and your plans for what our future children will do together. I clarify that I don’t want to have children, but you can’t seem to understand that decision. You question how happy, satisfied, or fulfilled my life will be without children, the maternal instincts I’m supposed to be feeling, and my desire to have something to care for and love. You’re convinced that I will recognize how empty my life will be sans …

Comparative Analysis Of Athens’ And Utah’S Educational Struggles, Benjamin W. Blair, A. Legrand Richards, Andreas M. Kazamias Sep 2013

Comparative Analysis Of Athens’ And Utah’S Educational Struggles, Benjamin W. Blair, A. Legrand Richards, Andreas M. Kazamias

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Though this project was frustrating and draining at times, I feel so fortunate to have undertaken such a study. My paper and my results are the least of what I learned. The greatest learning experiences on my part were simply seeing another system of education at work, and watching how a system functions which is based on completely different foundations from the system I grew up with.

High Risk Behavior Among Adolescent Males, Debra W. Armstrong, Dr. Renata T. Forste Sep 2013

High Risk Behavior Among Adolescent Males, Debra W. Armstrong, Dr. Renata T. Forste

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Many adolescents today are involved in high risk behaviors which have negative health consequences, and which reduce the likelihood of them growing up to be responsible adults.1 Past research of high risk behavior has been largely based on cross-sectional, area specific data. In this research, national longitudinal data are used to predict high risk behaviors by focusing on risk behaviors such as alcohol use, or smoking cigarettes. Few studies have considered these behaviors together and as noted by Jessor, these behaviors are more of a lifestyle than just separate events.2

Socially Supported Exercise : Implications For Improving Mental Health In Women, Sarah M. Gillio

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study uses a Self Psychology framework to explore how a socially supported exercise program, CrossFit, influences women's sense of self and their feelings of vitality. The experiences and perspectives of twenty-seven female members of CrossFit gyms were elicited through self-developed, semi-structured interviews composed of questions that encouraged participants to reflect on what ways they have experienced mirroring, twinship, idealization, and feelings of vitality at their CrossFit gym. All participants reported experiencing these Self Psychology indicators. Every participant also reported that the social support that they experienced at their gym was important to them. The findings of this study …

An Exploration Of Language Used In Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, Margot K. Goodnow Sep 2013

An Exploration Of Language Used In Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking, Margot K. Goodnow

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This theoretical investigation explored the effect of pejorative labels on victims of domestic minor sex trafficking. Presently, children involved in domestic minor sex trafficking are perceived either as "victims" in need of services, or as "criminals," juvenile prostitutes, deserving punitive action. Due to the age and compounded vulnerability of this population, understanding the negative effect this can have on victims' identity development is crucial to providing appropriate and deserved treatment. This study utilized relational-cultural theory and trauma-focused cognitive behavioral theory to understand the impact of the criminalization of complex trauma and to provide a framework for clinical interventions with this …

Racially Aware Supervision : Examining How White Mental Health Clinicians Address Cultural Competency With Their White Supervisors, Elizabeth Hammond

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This research examines how multicultural competency and racial difference are addressed in supervision between White mental health clinicians and their White supervisors in mental health settings that serve primarily clients of color. The researcher completed a qualitative case study analysis of five participants who were asked to discuss the content and nature of their supervision with their White supervisors. Three research questions served as the foundation to explore supervisors' and clinicians' attention to cultural competence in the supervisory relationship: (1) How are multicultural issues, race, and racism addressed in supervision? (2) How does attention to clinician-client cultural issues in supervision …

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd Sep 2013

“I Love My Work But...” The Professionalization Of Early Childhood Education, Margaret Boyd

The Qualitative Report

There are two separate but related issues that have challenged advocates, researchers and practitioners in the field of early education and care work for decades : improving the quality of children’s programs and increasing the wages and benefits of the workers. The solution has been framed as a need for professionalizing the workforce – professional development training, higher education and enhanced skills. While seeking professional status is expected to improve the quality of childcare programs and worker compensation, the relationship between quality, compensation and professional development training has not been fully explored. Through in - depth interviews with 32 early …

Breathers, Releases, Outlets And Pauses: Employee Resistance In The Context Of Depersonalized Bullying, Premilla D'Cruz

The Qualitative Report

Drawing on a study rooted in van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenology, conducted with agents working in international - facing call centers in Mumbai and Bangalore, India, this paper describes employee resistance to depersonalized bullying. Data were gathered through conversational interviews and subjected to selective and sententious thematic analyses. The theme of ‘breathers, releases, outlets and pauses’ captures both the various behaviours that participants engaged in to gain respite from and to acquire control over their oppressive work environment and the factors that determine their behaviours, namely, their professional identity and their job - related material gains. The findings not only further …

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher Sep 2013

The Metaphors That Research Students Live By, Rod Pitcher

The Qualitative Report

In this paper I report a study of the ways in which research students think about their research. I took a unique approach by using metaphor analysis to study the students’ conceptions. The research students in this study were recruited for an on - line survey at an Australian research - intensive university in which they answered questions relating to their conceptions of research. Five categories of metaphors for research were arrived at which I have labelled metaphors of space, metaphors of travel, metaphors of action, metaphors of the body and metaphors of ordeal. These metaphors provide useful information about …

The Ecology Of Bullying : How Might Counselors' Reflections On Bullying Improve School-Based Interventions?, Mary K. GutiéRrez

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Schools are struggling to find intervention and prevention plans that will be effective in preventing and intervening in bullying. Phone interviews and online surveys were conducted with 16 respondents - a cross-section of child and school counselors - to find what they have found most and least helpful. Overall, participants agreed that they continue to struggle to find effective ways of preventing, managing and responding to bullying incidents and the overall culture that induces bullying. The majority of respondents felt their schools' policies and/or actions were not effective or not effective enough, however, those who worked in schools that used …

Patient Perceptions Of Shared Decision Making: What Does It Mean And How Does It Affect Patient Outcomes?, Laura Aubree Shay Sep 2013

Patient Perceptions Of Shared Decision Making: What Does It Mean And How Does It Affect Patient Outcomes?, Laura Aubree Shay

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Shared decision making (SDM) has been advocated as an optimal approach to medical decision-making. Yet, little is known about how patients perceive SDM and whether patient-defined SDM is associated with patient outcomes. Methods: This three-manuscript dissertation used a mixed-methods approach including a systematic literature review and both qualitative and quantitative research methods. The aims were to: (1) systematically review the patient outcomes studied in relation to SDM and identify under what measurement contexts SDM is associated with which types of patient outcomes; (2) use in-depth, qualitative interviews to develop a conceptual model of patient-defined SDM and compare this to …

Using citation analysis, I show the movement kinesics through various disciplines. This significant field of research has progressed from a research topic centered …

Inadequate Access To Healthy Opportunities And Structural Violence: A Case Study Of Health Disparities Among Hispanics In Mclean County, Cecilia Montesdeoca Sep 2013

Inadequate Access To Healthy Opportunities And Structural Violence: A Case Study Of Health Disparities Among Hispanics In Mclean County, Cecilia Montesdeoca

Senior Theses - Anthropology

Significant disproportionate human suffering is experienced by socially disadvantaged populations as a result of preventable difference in the burden of disease, injury, violence, and/or opportunities to achieve optimal health. Disparities in health refer to differences between two or more population groups in health outcomes and in the prevalence, incidence, or burden of disease, disability, injury, or death (CNHEOa 2013). Health disparities are discriminatory and are directly related to the historical and current unequal distribution of social, political, economic, and environmental resources (CDC 2007). While such disparities are more visible when comparing health status of whole countries, they are also embedded …

The Culture Of Crossfit: A Lifestyle Prescription For Optimal Health And Fitness, Steven Kuhn Sep 2013

The Culture Of Crossfit: A Lifestyle Prescription For Optimal Health And Fitness, Steven Kuhn

Senior Theses - Anthropology

The increasing frequency of obesity related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension are often the product of a nutritionally inadequate diet along with sedentary lifestyle. The fitness movement called CrossFit, formed by Greg Glassman in 1996, provides an alternative prescription to battling these physical ailments by incorporating high intensity-functional exercise along with a Paleolithic-inspired diet (The Paleo Diet). CrossFit is a distinct lifestyle that encourages participants to strive for an "elite" and "optimal" state of fitness and health. In this thesis I provide ethnographic data collected from participant-observation at a CrossFit gym in Bloomington, IL. I examine scientific …

The Interactive Effects Of Self-Perceptions And Job Requirements On Creative Problem Solving, Erika J. Robinson-Morral, Roni Reiter-Palmon, James C. Kaufman Sep 2013

The Interactive Effects Of Self-Perceptions And Job Requirements On Creative Problem Solving, Erika J. Robinson-Morral, Roni Reiter-Palmon, James C. Kaufman

Psychology Faculty Publications

Over the years, researchers have focused on ways to facilitate creativity in the workplace by looking at individual factors and organizational factors that affect employee creativity (Woodman, Sawyer, & Griffin, 1993). In many cases, the factors that affect creativity are examined independently. In other words, it is uncommon for researchers to look at the interaction among individual and organizational factors. In this study, it is argued that to get a true understanding of how to maximize creativity in the workplace, organizational researchers must look at the interaction between organizational factors and individual factors that affect employee creativity. More specifically, …
