The Impact Of Asset Ownership On Future Orientation Of Youth And Their Parents: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa Sep 2013

The Impact Of Asset Ownership On Future Orientation Of Youth And Their Parents: Evidence From The Youthsave Ghana Experiment, Gina A. N. Chowa, Rainier D. Masa

Center for Social Development Research

Future orientation influences a variety of desirable behaviors, but few researchers have studied the impact of economic resources on future orientation. In this study, we investigate whether and how asset ownership influences future orientation of Ghanaian youth and their parents. Results of propensity score models suggest that asset ownership has a positive effect on future orientation of youth and their parents. Ownership of household possessions, including televisions and modes of transportation, contributes to higher levels of future orientation among youth and parents, but livestock ownership has a negative effect on future orientation. Asset ownership provides individuals and households with a …

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

My thesis will use case material from a patient with an emerging diagnosis of a major mental illness (Bipolar Disorder) to examine the intersection of mood, character, medical comorbidity, substance abuse, to better understand how these factors contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of a patient with a complicated, but in no way unique presentation, of this complicated and unique disorder. The case material utilized will be based on patient records and process recordings from our treatment sessions. The theoretical thesis structurally is comprised of an analysis of two bodies of knowledge, a phenomenon, and a synthesis. The first area …

High School Staff Perceptions Of Interpersonal Relationships With Students As A Result Of An Intervention Called Challenge Day, Stacy Chase Mcmillan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This project was undertaken to capture the responses of administrators and teachers in a public high school setting in regard to their perceptions of interpersonal relationships with students as a result of participation in Challenge Day, an experiential youth program that targets the cause of social oppression on school campuses. As there was little prior research that indicated how teachers and administrators of public schools understand and integrate teachings presented in large-scale interventions, this research attempted to offer data that will allow for a broader discussion of prevention and intervention programs involving school staff and students collectively. A public high …

Are You My Motherboard? : The Effects Of Technology On The Parent-Child Relationship, David S. Sullivan

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

New technologies have been evolving at a rapid pace over the last few decades. The convenience afforded by many technologies presents interesting questions in terms of attachment. Recent research on internet addiction disorder (IAD) has revealed that technology may be affecting people on a social, familial, and neurophysiological basis. This research explores the effects of technology on the parent-child relationship. The research interviewed six participants through telephone interviews: treatment participants (TP, n=2) in this research are both young men who meet criteria for IAD and completed treatment relative to their technology addiction; clinical participants (CP, n=4) in this research are …

Faculty Research - Newspaper and Magazine Articles

Why is the Pakistani currency depreciating so rapidly vis-à-vis foreign currencies? How can this trend be arrested? What is the future outlook for Pakistan’s currency? These questions must be addressed in a dispassionate manner.

Economic theory has many explanations for relative currency movements. The simplest one is that if country X records the inflation rate at 10pc per annum while country Y’s is only 2pc, the bilateral exchange rate of country X should result in depreciation of 8pc vis-à-vis country Y.

Hardly any country has economic ties with only one country. Therefore, a trade-weighted exchange rate is used where weights …

Re-Interpreting Melton’S Study Of Gallery Density And Visitor Attention, Stephen Bitgood, Todd Mckerchar, Stephany Dukes

Research, Publications & Creative Work

The works of Edward Robinson and Arthur Melton conducted in the 1920s and 1930s are often cited, but rarely read. The focus of this article is on one of Melton’s (1935) classic visitor studies, re-examined in terms of several explanatory mechanisms including a decision-making model of visitor attention. Melton varied the number of paintings in a gallery from 6 to 36 in increments of 6. As the number of paintings increased, the proportion of paintings actually viewed decreased; however, the average viewing time per painting remained constant. Melton’s findings of decreased attention are discussed in terms of four possible explanations: …

Providing Outreach And Enrollment Assistance: Lessons Learned From Community Health Centers In Massachusetts, Julia Paradise, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Jessica Sharac, Carmen Alvarez, Julia Zur, Leighton Ku

Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative

In 2006, major health care reform legislation was enacted in Massachusetts. In many ways a prototype for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Massachusetts law required nearly all state residents to obtain health insurance, and made insurance accessible and affordable by reforming the health insurance market and providing subsidies for coverage through expansions of Medicaid and CHIP and a new program for low-income adults who are not eligible for Medicaid, known as Commonwealth Care. The law also created the “Connector,” which, like the ACA’s health insurance Marketplaces, is designed to facilitate and simplify access to insurance for individuals, families, and …

Providing Outreach And Enrollment Assistance: Lessons Learned From Community Health Centers In Massachusetts, Julia Paradise, Sara J. Rosenbaum, Peter Shin, Jessica Sharac, Carmen Alvarez, Julia Zur, Leighton C. Ku

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Six years ago, Massachusetts implemented a broad expansion of health coverage to the uninsured population in the state. Understanding that outreach and enrollment assistance would be essential to the success of the expansion, state policymakers provided for public education campaigns, but also for person-to-person, hands-on assistance, especially in communities with large numbers of uninsured people. Community health centers play a central role in this effort. As states and communities gear up to provide outreach and enrollment assistance under the ACA, the experience of the Massachusetts health centers offers lessons that can help inform current efforts to reach and enroll millions …

Goats Favour Personal Over Social Information In An Experimental Foraging Task, Luigi Baciadonna, Alan G. Mcelligott, Elodie F. Briefer Sep 2013

Goats Favour Personal Over Social Information In An Experimental Foraging Task, Luigi Baciadonna, Alan G. Mcelligott, Elodie F. Briefer

Ethology Collection

Animals can use their environments more efficiently by selecting particular sources of information (personal or social), according to specific situations. Group-living animals may benefit from gaining information based on the behaviour of other individuals. Indeed, social information is assumed to be faster and less costly to use than personal information, thus increasing foraging efficiency. However, when food sources change seasonally or are randomly distributed, individual information may become more reliable than social information. The aim of this study was to test the use of conflicting personal versus social information in goats (Capra hircus), in a foraging task.We found that goats …

Authentic Connectedness : An Exploration Of Gestalt Therapy Principles In Addressing The Dynamics Of Interacting Across Identity Difference, Marissa H. Mcmillin Sep 2013

Authentic Connectedness : An Exploration Of Gestalt Therapy Principles In Addressing The Dynamics Of Interacting Across Identity Difference, Marissa H. Mcmillin

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This qualitative study explored the experiences of how Gestalt therapists understand and apply principles of "authentic connectedness" when interacting across difference, such as race, culture, class, gender or sexuality, in both their clinical work and experiences in daily life. The researcher was especially interested in how these principles are used to understand and address interactions around privilege and oppression, which are dynamics that come up on a daily basis in American society, both within and beyond the therapy relationship. Ten Gestalt therapists, formally trained in Gestalt therapy, were interviewed and asked to describe interactions where they were cognizant of a …

Learning To Work With Clients : A Quantitative Study On Educational Pathways For Social Workers Working With Psychotropic Medication, Katherine S. Preston

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The current study explored how clinical social workers working with patients who are prescribed psychotropic medication went about developing the knowledge and skills to work with the population. The study identified training activities that contribute to the development of practice skills, and examined the relationship between these activities and self-rated practice competency levels. A snowball sample of 28 clinical social workers whose scope of practice included collaborating on the care of patients who are prescribed psychotropic medications were recruited. Participants completed a brief, anonymous, online questionnaire that was developed for the current study, and informed by the work of Bentley, …

An Exploration Of The Effects Of Stigma On The Experiences Of Foster Care Alumni, Anais J. Penninck

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of stigma on foster care alumni. Participants were asked about their experiences in foster care related to stigma and how this may have affected their relationships and personal development. They were also prompted to share any other information the researcher may have missed. Six men were interviewed for this study between the ages of 19 and 37. The interviews provided rich information about how they interpreted the stigma and what short and long-term effects were results of this stigma. Additionally, the majority of participants who identified stigma described it …
