A Hypochondriac Investigates The Evolution Of Medicine, Natalie S. Sherif Sep 2013

A Hypochondriac Investigates The Evolution Of Medicine, Natalie S. Sherif

Blogging the Library

This exhibit will open to the public in February 2014, but until then I have my work cut out for me. I am currently researching various aspects of medical history spanning from the mid-1800s, through the Civil War, to WWI. Thus far I have read accounts of women volunteers during the American Civil War, important changes that went into effect during WWI, and an overly detailed description on how to perform tooth extractions according to the latest science of the 1860s. Economic Influence On Pediatric Health Care In A Medically Pluralistic Society: An Ethnographic Study Among The Asante People Of Ghana, Kevin Gamett, Dr. Randy Val Johnson, Dr. William Carl Sep 2013

Economic Influence On Pediatric Health Care In A Medically Pluralistic Society: An Ethnographic Study Among The Asante People Of Ghana, Kevin Gamett, Dr. Randy Val Johnson, Dr. William Carl

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There are many factors that influence decisions regarding medical care, including financial, situational, and ideological issues. Families may choose to avoid modern health care facilities because of the costs associated with hospital stays, treatment regimes, transportation, and lost time. Long waiting times, disrespectful treatment from doctors and nurses, and family obligations are also qualitative issues that contribute to the eschewing of modern medicine. Other families choose to go to hospitals and health clinics because they believe that medicines are the ultimate source of healing, following the western paradigms set by principles of physiology, anatomy, chemistry, and internal medicine. In questions …

Suicide In Older Adults : Helping Case Managers Engage In Difficult Conversations : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation In Collaboration The Producer Of The Film "Talking With Dolores", Darlene O'Connor, Jennelle Liljestrand Sep 2013

Suicide In Older Adults : Helping Case Managers Engage In Difficult Conversations : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation In Collaboration The Producer Of The Film "Talking With Dolores", Darlene O'Connor, Jennelle Liljestrand

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

Suicide among older adults is an increasing mental health concern in the United States, and yet depression and other signs of suicide often go unnoticed. The film and discussion guide "Talking with Dolores" was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to increase awareness of warnings of depression and suicide in the elderly and demonstrate ways of conversing with them about suicide. Because of their unique contact with older individuals in their own homes, geriatric case managers are positioned as a gateway to necessary psychosocial support for elders, yet may not be receiving adequate training for the initial detection …

Arizona Public Libraries Serving The Spanish-Speaking: Context For Changes, Denice Adkins, C. Sean Burns Sep 2013

Arizona Public Libraries Serving The Spanish-Speaking: Context For Changes, Denice Adkins, C. Sean Burns

Information Science Faculty Publications

Arizona is at the forefront of Latino population growth and political and racial politics. Three different factors could potentially influence the provision of library service to Latinos in the State of Arizona. These are (1) the growth of the Latino community and the consequent growth of its library needs, (2) the growth of state legislation that is hostile to immigrants and Latinos, and (3) the promotion of a pro-immigrant position by the library profession. This paper compares services to the Spanish-speaking in the State of Arizona from 1999 to 2009 in light of conflicting pro- and anti-immigrant sentiments operating in …

Publications and Research

Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by triad of motor, cognitive, and emotional symptoms along with neuropathology in fronto-striatal circuit and limbic system including amygdala. Emotional alterations, which have a negative impact on patient well-being, represent some of the earliest symptoms of HD and might be related to the onset of the neurodegenerative process. In the transgenic rat model (tgHD rats), evidence suggest emotional alterations at the symptomatic stage along with neuropathology of the central nucleus of amygdala (CE). Studies in humans and animals demonstrate that emotion can modulate time perception. The impact of emotion on time perception has never been …

Hungarian Health Care: What Is The Cure?, Charlotte L. Rosen, Walter Whipple Sep 2013

Hungarian Health Care: What Is The Cure?, Charlotte L. Rosen, Walter Whipple

Journal of Undergraduate Research

“Hungarians, rise, your country calls you! Meet this hour, whatever befalls you! Shall we freemen be, or slaves? Choose the lot your spirit craves!”1 This was proclaimed by the famous Hungarian poet, Petrofi Sandor, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1948. This battle cry is a taste of the deep-rooted spirit of the Hungarian people that has persisted throughout their tumultuous history. Because of its strategic location in Eastern Europe, Hungary has been conquered and ruled by other countries numerous times. Most recently Hungary was under Communist control until the Iron Curtain fell in 1989. Hungary has many social, economic, and …

Trust-But-Verify: Guaranteeing The Integrity Of User-Generated Content In Online Applications, Akshay Dua Sep 2013

Trust-But-Verify: Guaranteeing The Integrity Of User-Generated Content In Online Applications, Akshay Dua

Dissertations and Theses

Online applications that are open to participation lack reliable methods to establish the integrity of user-generated information. Users may unknowingly own compromised devices, or intentionally publish forged information. In these scenarios, applications need some way to determine the "correctness" of autonomously generated information. Towards that end, this thesis presents a "trust-but-verify" approach that enables open online applications to independently verify the information generated by each participant. In addition to enabling independent verification, our framework allows an application to verify less information from more trustworthy users and verify more information from less trustworthy ones. Thus, an application can trade-off performance for …

How Can We Improve Government Performance? Implementation Context And Key Factors Affecting Performance Outcomes, Alexander C. Heckman Sep 2013

How Can We Improve Government Performance? Implementation Context And Key Factors Affecting Performance Outcomes, Alexander C. Heckman

Scholarship Forum 2013

Dr. Alexander Heckman discusses how we expect our governments to tackle a diverse array of problems and take on a myriad of responsibilities. Often, we are frustrated at their apparent lack of success at doing so. What are the key factors that impact how effectively government agencies perform? Drawing upon my own empirical research and the public administration literature, I present a framework for thinking about the answer to this question, along with ideas for how to improve government performance. Specifically, I focus on the impact of management quality on government performance; including its interrelationship with other important factors such …

Innovation, Inequality, And The Commercialization Of Academic Research, Walter Valdivia Sep 2013

Innovation, Inequality, And The Commercialization Of Academic Research, Walter Valdivia

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Patent policy is rarely debated in relation to its distributive consequences. In particular, the Bayh-Dole Act has been discussed in terms of its effects on the pace of innovation or the organization of science. However, this lecture re-assesses this policy from the perspective of a fair distribution of resources, both those committed to and those created by research-based innovation. Specifically, examining the management of university’s intellectual property, Valdivia will identify the institutional arrangements that reinforce a very asymmetric distribution of political and economic resources among universities and then characterize subtle but important links between these inequalities and the social distribution …

Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King Sep 2013

Crime And Public Health: Interdisciplinary Approach To Education, Karen Miner-Romanoff, Leslie J. King

Scholarship Forum 2013

Dr. Karen Miner-Romanoff and Dr. Leslie King state that although crime rates have decreased in the last several years, they remain alarmingly high. Recidivism rates, in the meantime, continue to rise with up to half of all new prison inmates incarcerated for reoffending after their initial release (Matz, et al., 2012). As the costs of a failed criminal justice system becomes unsustainable, scholars search for new evidence-based, innovative and collaborative solutions to lower crime and increased public health and safety. As a result of this collaboration, some criminal justice and public health leaders are seeking to develop new theoretical and …

The Politics Of Ohio Medicaid Expansion, Daniel Skinner Sep 2013

The Politics Of Ohio Medicaid Expansion, Daniel Skinner

Scholarship Forum 2013

Dr. Daniel Skinner's poster unravels the politics of Medicaid expansion in Ohio. Through graphic representations of key political, ethical, and policy dynamics, I show why Governor John Kasich has come to see the Medicaid expansion issue differently than most of the members of his Republican caucus, going so far as to call it “a matter of life and death.” This position, I show, owes in part to the different responsibilities that governors have within health care policy-making, as well as the unique politics of the state of Ohio. Medicaid expansion is likely to happen in particular because it promises to …

Examining The Role Of Perceived Religious Privilege, Leslie A. Miller, Suzan Waller Sep 2013

Examining The Role Of Perceived Religious Privilege, Leslie A. Miller, Suzan Waller

Scholarship Forum 2013

“Does perceived privilege surrounding religious affiliation in the workplace affect employees’ reactions to organizational justice?” We analyze what role, if any, religious diversity plays in the workplace; specifically what effects this diversity may have on employees' feelings and behaviors. We examine responses of 35 working adults attending Franklin University using a non-probability online questionnaire. The data show that religion is mentioned during interpersonal interactions, people do perceive that co-workers receive immunities based on their religion, and people are treated differently and worse because of their religious preference. The results, while a small dataset, show that religious diversity does have an …

Propensity For Military Enlistment : A Descriptive Study Of Motivations, Claudia J. Vogelsang Sep 2013

Propensity For Military Enlistment : A Descriptive Study Of Motivations, Claudia J. Vogelsang

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The objective of this descriptive study was to identify and describe those motivations for individuals who chose to enter into the military. Motivations are important to understand as they provide insight into the values and needs of individuals. These values and needs impact an individual's Person-In-Environment fit. The study utilized an online survey to which 76 veterans or service members responded. The online survey collected demographic data such as age, gender, race and branch of service. The questionnaire then asked participants to rank a list of enlistment motivations noted in previous studies (Griffith, 2008; Woodruff, Kelty and Segal, 2007)on a …

The Role Of Lgbt Community In The Lives Of Lesbians Over 65 : An Exploratory Study, Sarah L. Shapiro Sep 2013

The Role Of Lgbt Community In The Lives Of Lesbians Over 65 : An Exploratory Study, Sarah L. Shapiro

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to explore the role of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the lives of lesbians over 65. Lesbians over 65 have lived through a period in U.S. history when homosexuality was not socially acceptable or safe; LGBT individuals lived with a real and constant threat of loss of employment and family, and of violence, without protection of law that is afforded today. LGBT individuals are currently more accepted, safe, and visible in the U.S, as are the communities that they have formed. With these new developments, do lesbians over 65 participate in, or connect with …
