Exposure to olfactory cues during embryonic development can have long term impacts on birds and amphibians behaviour. Despite the vast literature on predator recognition and responses in fishes, few researchers have determined how fish embryos respond to predator cues. Here we exposed four-day-old rainbowfish (Melanotaenia duboulayi) embryos to cues emanating from a novel predator, a native predator and injured conspecifics. Their response was assessed by monitoring heart rate and hatch time. Results showed that embryos have an innate capacity to differentiate between cues as illustrated by faster heart rates relative to controls. The greatest increase in heart rate occurred in …

Assessing The Potential Impact Of The Affordable Care Act On Uninsured Community Health Center Patients: A Nationwide And State-By-State Analysis, Peter Shin, Jessica Sharac, Sara J. Rosenbaum

In this brief, we estimate the number of uninsured community health center (CHC) patients who would gain coverage under the Affordable Care Act using data from the 2009 HRSA Survey of CHC patients and 2011 Uniform Data System. We find that were all states to implement the Affordable Care Act Medicaid expansion, an estimated 5 million uninsured health center patients – or two-thirds of all uninsured patients served by CHCs nationally – would be eligible for coverage. However, over one million uninsured patients – 72% of whom live in southern states – who would have been eligible for coverage will …

The purpose of this research was to explore the mechanisms of how the brain is able to distinguish harmony and dissonance. The understanding of how sound is converted to neural messages began with Békésy, who discovered how sound is transduced in the cochlea. Later it was found that each auditory neural fiber, which carried the messages for a specific frequency of sound, corresponded to a specific place in the primary auditory cortex (referred to as “tonotopic”). A common problem for cities of developing countries like India in managing traffic is the lack of basic automated instrumentation to track road conditions or vehicle locations. Still, to help their citizens make informed travel decisions based on changing city dynamics; many cities have an authorized, city-initiated, notification service in place to alert subscribing commuters about road conditions. Here, alternative means may be used to create informal textual notifications e.g., inputs from field personnel, citizen updates, and pre-authorized events from city calendar. Children diagnosed with hydrocephalus, or patients suffering from head trauma require treatment by a neurosurgeon and a neurologist. Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the patient has retained too much cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) by either over production, or inability to shunt off old fluid. Since the cranium, effectively a closed boxed around the brain, is rigid, an increase in CSF causes an increase in the amount of pressure the brain experiences. Patients suffering from trauma also experience increased intracranial pressure (ICP) but by a different mechanism; trauma causes the brain itself to swell and push against the cranium. One …

A child with a disability may be a unique stressor to all members of the family. For years, researchers have focused on the parents and the child with a disability in the family. However, fewer studies have specifically focused on typically developing siblings of children with disabilities. Phonetic convergence is defined as an increase in the similarity of acoustic-phonetic form between talkers. Previous research has demonstrated phonetic convergence both when a talker listens passively to speech and while talkers engage in social interaction. Much of this research has focused on a diverse array of acoustic-phonetic attributes, with fewer studies incorporating perceptual measures of phonetic convergence. The current paper reviews research on phonetic convergence in both non-interactive and conversational settings, and attempts to consolidate the diverse array of findings by proposing a paradigm that models perceptual and acoustic measures together. During the year 2000, five of South Africa’s most populated regions—Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Pretoria, and Ekurhuleni—underwent a consolidation of power that combined many local city councils into a large unicity council. In each case the official goal of the consolidation was to increase the efficiency of service delivery, benefit from economies of scale, and avoid duplication of services. Proponents of the action cited the examples of New York City and Toronto for support. The Social Compass Curriculum (SCC) was investigated for its effectiveness in improving core social skills in three descriptive case studies of students with autism. Treatment fidelity of the SCC was also measured in the school setting. The Social Responsiveness Scale and the Autism Social Skills Profile were completed by parents to measure pre- and postintervention social skills for three students aged 8 to 11 years who participated in the present multisite pilot study. Fidelity of implementation data were collected via a checklist during observations for three educators who implemented the intervention. Results indicate that the SCC improved core social deficits …

Examples of information made public at the initiative of the public body, without the need for filing a request, are: www.data.gov and www.recovery.gov. This study of 1,492 emerging adults focuses on the relationships among negative family of origin experiences, attitudes about marriage, positive communication and the influence of past romantic relationships. The data used in this study comes from a survey questionnaire, READY (see www.relate-institute.org) completed by emerging adult participants (18-25). Results from the Structural Equation Model showed both aversive family of origin experiences and negative beliefs about marriage have a significant and negative influence on perceptions of romantic relationship experiences. Also, positive communication has a significant and positive influence on perceptions of past romantic relationships. However, positive communication did not mediate the …

Survivors of landmine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) incidents suffer unique consequences from their injuries as a result of their age and gender. As they often have distinct societal roles, survivor assistance needs for women, girls, boys and men differ. Inadequate research on the effects of mine/ERW incidents on men and boys may hinder recovery for male survivors and their families and communities.
