Student Diversity Histories
The history of Indiana State University is rich with the stories of women. From the beginning of The Indiana State Normal Teaching College women have been intrinsic to the success and progress of the institution and played an important role. Many of these roles reflect the progress of women’s rights throughout the country. From suffrage to affirmative action, women have shaped ISU. It is impossible to curate every story and event in the history of women at ISU, but through extensive archival research their voices are now heard again. Here is their story.

Ecosystem-based planning and management have stimulated the need to gather sociocultural values and human uses of land in formats accessible to diverse planners and researchers. Human Ecology Mapping (HEM) approaches offer promising spatial data gathering and analytical tools, while also addressing important questions about human-landscape connections. This article reviews and compares the characteristics of three HEM approaches that are increasingly used in natural resource management contexts, each focused on a particular aspect of human-environmental interactions. These aspects include tenure and resource use (TRU), local ecological knowledge (LEK), and sense of place (SOP). We discuss their origins, provide examples of their …

Altered Emotional Interference Processing In The Amygdala And Insula In Women With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Steven E. Bruce, Katherine R. Buchholz, Wilson J. Brown, Laura Yan
Psychology Faculty Works
Background: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by distinct behavioral and physiological changes. Given the significant impairments related to PTSD, examination of the biological underpinnings is crucial to the development of theoretical models and improved treatments of PTSD. Methods: We used an attentional interference task using emotional distracters to test for top-down versus bottom-up dysfunction in the interaction of cognitive-control circuitry and emotion-processing circuitry. A total of 32 women with PTSD (based on an interpersonal trauma) and 21 matched controls were tested. Event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging was carried out as participants directly attended to, or attempted to ignore, fear-related …
Recommender Systems As A Mobile Marketing Service, Donald J. Kridel, Daniel R. Dolk, David Castillo
Recommender Systems As A Mobile Marketing Service, Donald J. Kridel, Daniel R. Dolk, David Castillo
Department of Economics Faculty Works
Recommender systems (RSs) have become a familiar artifact in cyberspace as a vehicle for increasing revenues while deepening customer loyalty and satisfaction. Typically RS are developed in house by companies with a large product line and customer base. However, the structure of RS is often straightforward, and effective systems can be developed at relatively low cost, and thus offered as a marketing service. We discuss the anatomy of a specific recommender system designed for a telecommunication carrier which uses predictive analytics in the form of collaborative filtering techniques to recommend products to users. Collaborative filtering (CF) is based upon the …
Belief Is Not Experience: Transformation As A Tool For Bridging The Ontological Divide In Anthropological Research And Reporting, Bonnie Glass-Coffin
Belief Is Not Experience: Transformation As A Tool For Bridging The Ontological Divide In Anthropological Research And Reporting, Bonnie Glass-Coffin
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
For more than a hundred years, anthropologists have recorded stories of beliefs in other-than-human sentience and consciousness, yet we have most frequently insisted on contextualizing these stories in terms of cultural, epistemological, or ontological relativism. In this paper, I ask why we have had such a hard time taking reports of unseen realms seriously and describe the transformative role of personal experience as a catalyst for change in anthropological research and reporting.

The Performative Speech And Silence Of Rape Trees: Staging Sexual Violence Against Migrant Women In The U.S.-Mexican Borderlands, Hana Masri
International Studies Honors Projects
"Rape trees"—trees and bushes in the U.S.-Mexican borderlands upon which hang bras and underwear—serve as a display of the sexual assault and labor exploitation to which marginalized migrant women are vulnerable. Women making the journey to and across the border contend with sexual violence, as well as the political and economic violences that both construct the economies of the border and compel migrant women to it. The continued performance and re-performance of rape trees attempt to reinstate the silencing of migrant women. They also shed light on the intricacies of power, citizenship, and subjectivity that migrant women confront at the …
Payment Schemes And Moral Hazard, James Foust
Payment Schemes And Moral Hazard, James Foust
Honors Papers
In a principal-agent relationship, the principal offers a take-it-or-leave-it contract to the agent, who decides to either accept it or not. In game theory terminology, the principal agent relationship is a Stackelberg game in which the principal is the leader, proposing the contract, and the agent is the follower, choosing to accept or reject the proposal. Examples of such relationships are plentiful, such as a principal bank manager hiring an agent employee to work as a teller, a principal land-owner acting hiring an agent farmer to grow crops on her land, or an insurance company offering a home insurance plan …
Parallel Pillars: How International Relations Theory Can Explicate And Rebalance The Three Pillars Of The Responsibility To Protect, Lauren Muscott
Parallel Pillars: How International Relations Theory Can Explicate And Rebalance The Three Pillars Of The Responsibility To Protect, Lauren Muscott
Honors Papers
This paper explores the emerging United Nations principle of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) and how the three major theoretical schools of international relations "Constructivism, Liberalism, and Realism" can contribute to understanding and implementing R2P. Using the three pillar framework of R2P outlined by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in 2009, this paper asserts that striking parallels can be found between pillar and theory. By exploring each R2P pillar through a particular theoretical lens, this paper seeks to provide a cross-theoretical analysis of R2P and demonstrate the need for a rebalancing of heavily Realist political thought and foreign policy with the …
"Terrorism" In The Age Of Obama: The Rhetorical Evolution Of President Obama’S Discourse On The "War On Terror", Kelly Long
Undergraduate Review
Since the events that transpired on the morning of September 11th, 2001, “terrorism” has become a part of the vocabulary of modern American culture. The word “terrorism” has become a powerful ideograph—a word or phrase that is abstract in nature, but has a great deal of ideological power—in American culture. This commonly used abstract word can be heard almost daily in the media and within the larger lexicon of American political discourse. Rhetoricians use the word to describe their motives and persuade audiences to align their ideological principles with those of the larger cause. This study examines how during President …
Car Modification: A Vehicle For Self Expression, Emily Kearns
Car Modification: A Vehicle For Self Expression, Emily Kearns
Undergraduate Review
When considering what falls into the remarkably broad discipline that is folklore, some of the first images that come to mind are peasants and farmers performing folk dances, passing down folktales, and engaging in age-old rituals and ceremonies. I certainly never would have considered car modification to fall under the folkloric umbrella – after all, it seems far too modern, and we often have the misconception that folklore is concerned exclusively with the lower-class workers of the distant past. However, after looking closely at some of the more modern interpretations and definitions of folklore (of which there are many), it …
Ex-Prisoners’ Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Programs And Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston
Ex-Prisoners’ Perceptions Of The Availability And Effects Of Programs And Services In Correctional Settings, Jenna Houston
Undergraduate Review
The U.S. system of retributive justice drives punitive measures, rather than interventions that could reduce recidivism. If prisoners’ needs are not met while serving time within the penal system, their chances of re-offending are greater (Baillargeon, 2010). The purpose of this study was to gather information about correctional programming from male ex-prisoners who have been involved in community re-entry services at Span Inc. in Boston, MA. Furthermore, this study also examines whether or not the programming contributed to positive coping skills during their incarceration as well as adaptation upon reentering the community. Data were collected during ten interviews, using a …
A Study In Sherlock, Rebecca Mclaughlin
A Study In Sherlock, Rebecca Mclaughlin
Undergraduate Review
In 2010, the BBC launched its newest series, Sherlock. The show was an instant success in the UK, Europe, and the United States. In early 2012, Season Two aired with even greater success. But we might ask why, nearly 120 years after he was first introduced, the character of Sherlock Holmes, along with his companion Dr. John Watson, still captures the attention of TV audiences? My study examines the representation of this fictional male friendship as a popular culture phenomenon both at the turn of the twentieth century and today. Focusing on the representation of domesticity and unmarried men, …

A Developmental Approach To Civility And Bystander Intervention, Jennifer Q. Mccary
College Life Publications
The students of color in your classroom experience discrimination every day, in small and large ways. They don’t often see themselves represented in their textbooks, and encounter hostility in school, and outside. For them race is a constant reality, and an issue they need, and want, to discuss. Failure to do so can inhibit their academic performance.
Failure to discuss race prevents White students from getting a real, critical and deep understanding of our society and their place in it. It is essential for the well-being of all students that they learn to have constructive conversations about the history of …
Representations Of Argentine National Identity Via El Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes, Lindsay Newby
Representations Of Argentine National Identity Via El Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes, Lindsay Newby
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
National identity is a concept that every nation constructs and celebrates through the remembrance of important events or persons, the projection of literary works, and the erection of monuments. Yet, in order to truly understand a nation’s self-imagery, one must examine and chart all of its different periods through time. This allows one to avoid narrow, static definitions by viewing a nation in a more holistic sense. In this study, it is hypothesized that museums function to preserve, assert, and disseminate a sense of heritage and, in the case of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, a sense of what …

In this paper, we present Twitris, a semantic Web application that facilitates browsing for news and information, using social perceptions as the fulcrum. In doing so we address challenges in large scale crawling, processing of real time information, and preserving spatio-temporal-thematic properties central to observations pertaining to real time events. We extract metadata about events from Twitter and bring related news and Wikipedia articles to the user. In developing Twitris, we have used the DBPedia ontology.
Welfare Incentives And Interstate Migration: An Analysis Of The Migration Decisions Of Poor, Single Mothers, John P. Weis
Welfare Incentives And Interstate Migration: An Analysis Of The Migration Decisions Of Poor, Single Mothers, John P. Weis
Gettysburg Economic Review
The purpose of this paper is to examine the role of welfare incentives in the decision to move for poor, single mothers. Using micro-level data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) and other sources, I develop an econometric model that estimates the influence of state welfare benefits on the interstate migration decisions of poor, single mothers, whether that be moving from states with low benefits or to states with high benefits. This study builds upon previous literature concerning interstate migration by considering new methodological approaches and theoretical models. Ultimately, the evidence suggests that while the welfare benefits offered …
