Crisis Informatics: Perspectives Of Trust – Is Social Media A Mixed Blessing?, Christine Hagar
Crisis Informatics: Perspectives Of Trust – Is Social Media A Mixed Blessing?, Christine Hagar
School of Information Student Research Journal
This paper highlights one of the key concerns in the emerging area of crisis informatics: issues of trusted information in crises/disasters and how the unregulated nature of social media affects information creation and dissemination. Deciding which information providers to trust and what sources of information to trust in crises is critical as acting upon trusted information can shape and influence the nature of the crisis. Social media is a powerful tool for sharing information during crises and can be used to improve emergency management capabilities, however, it has the power to misinform and to hinder response efforts.

‘Headmasters Become Noblemen’: Mainland Chinese Teachers’ Perspectives On Changes In Education In The Post-Mao Era, Lorin G. Yochim
‘Headmasters Become Noblemen’: Mainland Chinese Teachers’ Perspectives On Changes In Education In The Post-Mao Era, Lorin G. Yochim
Comparative and International Education / Éducation Comparée et Internationale
In this article I report findings of research into the lives and work of Mainland Chinese teachers of English in a broader context characterized by market economic reform. I draw on transcriptions of group interviews to describe and discuss teachers’ lives and work, and forward a critical analysis that posits a connection between teachers’ accounts and the re-structuring of social relations in post-Mao China. The article details one of several themes treated in the study, specifically the broad category of ‘effects of educational reform.’ I suggest that the compliance and resistance apparent in these accounts reveals Chinese teachers to be …

Growing Empathy : An Exploratory Study On The Effects Of School Gardens On Children's Social And Emotional Development : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At Berkeley Independent Study, Berkeley, California, Emily W. Mcmane
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this research study was to explore the effects of school garden programs on children's social and emotional development, specifically the development of empathy as measured by prosocial behaviors. This exploratory study employed qualitative research methods to interview six children, three parents, and two teachers involved in the Berkeley Independent Study (BIS) garden in Berkeley, California, gathering data regarding the participants' observations and experiences of the garden program. The findings suggest that there are many aspects of school garden programs that may positively influence children's social and emotional development. The significance of community, attachment, teaching respect for life, …
Urban Teachers' Perspectives On Promoting Social And Emotional Well-Being In The Classroom, Sara Lipton-Carey
Urban Teachers' Perspectives On Promoting Social And Emotional Well-Being In The Classroom, Sara Lipton-Carey
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored urban elementary school teachers' perspectives on promoting mental health in the classroom. Despite the increased research indicating the value of classroom-based mental health interventions and the growing availability of social and emotional health curricula, there is yet to be a widespread adoption of mental health promotion practices in classrooms. As there is little empirical research on what teachers believe their role is regarding the promotion of social and emotional well-being, this study attempts to reduce the research to practice gap by eliciting teachers' perspectives on this topic. Teachers increasingly need to meet the social and emotional …

The Ambiguous Loss Of Post-Integration : A Theoretical Analysis Of The Effects Of Integration On Clients With Dissociative Identity Disorder, Elise A. Manning
The Ambiguous Loss Of Post-Integration : A Theoretical Analysis Of The Effects Of Integration On Clients With Dissociative Identity Disorder, Elise A. Manning
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Although undergoing integration treatment and achieving intrapsychic integration is widely considered an unmitigated positive outcome for individuals diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder, the literature suggests that integration, which may include experiences or perceptions of loss, may be an outcome of far more complicated and varied resonance than is generally acknowledged. This theoretical study examines this little-examined element of the treatment outcome—the phenomenon of an individual's experience or perception of loss following integration treatment. The phenomenon is analyzed through two theoretical frames: (1) ambiguous loss theory, a conceptual framework developed by Pauline Boss to explain the experiences of arrested grief and …

Populations of many frogs have declined alarmingly in recent years, placing nearly one third of the > 6,000 species under threat of extinction. Declines have been attributed largely to habitat loss, environmental degradation and/or infectious diseases such as chytridiomycosis. Many frogs undergo dramatic natural population fluctuations such that long-term data are required to determine population trends without undue influence of stochastic factors. We present long-term quantitative data (individuals encountered per person hour of searching) for four monotypic frog genera endemic to an Afromontane region of exceptional importance but growing conservation concern: one endemic to the Ethiopian highlands (Spinophrynoides osgoodi) and three …

An Exploratory Survey Of Some Christian Leaders' Views Re: Causes And Treatment Of Mental Health And Substance Abuse Problems : "Let Go And Let God?" Or More?, Katryn A. Little
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was undertaken to determine the attitudes of leaders in Christian churches toward problems with mental health or substance abuse issues. As beliefs about causation of these problems may directly impact types of help offered to those suffering, leaders were also asked to identify particular types of treatment they recommended. This study was conducted in two parts. The first part involved a snowball sampling of known associates of the researcher who were asked for their help to enroll volunteers for an online survey. The survey asked about: how many and for what purpose the leaders met with congregants; …
Exploring Four Barriers Experienced By African Americans In Healthcare: Perceived Discrimination, Medical Mistrust, Race Discordance, And Poor Communication, Adolfo Gabriel Cuevas
Exploring Four Barriers Experienced By African Americans In Healthcare: Perceived Discrimination, Medical Mistrust, Race Discordance, And Poor Communication, Adolfo Gabriel Cuevas
Dissertations and Theses
For many health conditions, African Americans bear a disproportionate burden of disease, injury, death, and disability compared to European Americans. African Americans also use health services less frequently than do European Americans and this underuse of services contributes to health disparities in the United States. Studies have shown that some disparities are present not as a result of poor access to care, but, to a certain extent, as a result of the experiences patients have at their doctors' offices. It is, therefore, essential to understand African American patients' perspectives and experiences with healthcare providers. Past studies have shown that four …

Effectiveness Of A Portable, Large-Area Ultraviolet Germicidal Device, Mark P. Buttner, Thomas Yee, Patricia Cruz, Vanessa Stevens
Nevada Journal of Public Health
Effective disinfection of the hospital environment is a key component in the prevention of healthcare-associated infections. The objective of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of an ultraviolet germicidal device in reducing the concentrations of culturable bacteria on indoor surfaces. The ultraviolet germicidal device was installed and operated in four experimental trials conducted in a microbiology research chamber. Agar plates inoculated with known concentrations of two test microorganisms were placed on benches inside the chamber at two distances, 1.5 meters and 3.0 meters from the machine, for exposure times of 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 20 minutes. With test …

Hooked On A Feeling : Clinician Views On The Construct Of Love Addition In Treatment, Zehara J. Levin
Hooked On A Feeling : Clinician Views On The Construct Of Love Addition In Treatment, Zehara J. Levin
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study was inspired by the gap between discussions of love addiction in pop culture versus academic literature. The data was derived from 45-minute, open-ended interviews with eight clinicians (six LCSW's and two LMFT's) in the San Francisco, Bay Area. This thesis discusses the preexisting literature, analyzes data from the interviews, and explores differences and similarities between the two. Participants tended to view love addiction patterns as related to early caretaking dynamics and, regardless of the participant's personal views on love addiction, they felt that 12-step-groups, such as Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA), are beneficial. Participants also discussed …
Islamic Presentation On Social Media Communication, Adnan Osama Shareefi
Islamic Presentation On Social Media Communication, Adnan Osama Shareefi
Student Theses and Dissertations
The evolution of social networking sites and their integration with many modern-life aspects has urged religious people and parties as well to develop ways and tools to reach and communicate with others. Precisely, people who follow the religion of Islam have also used social networking sites to communicate religiously and to promote their religion and culture. This research has surveyed people who practice Islam to determine their usage of social networking sites to express their religious beliefs. This study attempts to answer three research questions and examine a hypothesis. Findings suggest that Muslims obtain religious communication on social media frequently …
The Role Of Speculators In Recent Price Volatility In Wheat Futures Markets, Jacob Delane Holloway
The Role Of Speculators In Recent Price Volatility In Wheat Futures Markets, Jacob Delane Holloway
Student Theses and Dissertations
Investors in the agricultural futures markets have been blamed for the recent price spikes. Consequently, policies have been proposed to curb speculation in these markets. This study evaluates "excessive" speculation or the lack thereof in the US wheat markets using hedging ratios, speculative ratios, Working's speculative `T' index and Granger causality tests to examine the investment activities of commodity index traders. The study results show that there is no "excess" speculation in the US wheat markets over the 2006-2011 periods. Indeed, the speculation levels found in this study are not significantly different from historical results reported in other studies and …
The Constant Comparative Analysis Method Outside Of Grounded Theory, Sheila M. Fram
The Constant Comparative Analysis Method Outside Of Grounded Theory, Sheila M. Fram
The Qualitative Report
This commentary addresses the gap in the literature regarding discussion of the legitimate use of Constant Comparative Analysis Method (CCA) outside of Grounded Theory. The purpose is to show the strength of using CCA to maintain the emic perspective and how theoretical frameworks can maintain the etic perspective throughout the analysis. My naturalistic inquiry model shows how conceptual frameworks and theoretical frameworks can be integrated when using the CCA method.

Is Librarians’ Health Affected By Ergonomic Factors At The Work Place?, Vahideh Zarea Gavgani, Jalil Nazari, Mohammad Asghari Jafarabadi, Fatemeh Rastegari
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Introduction: It is obvious that every professional worker is known as an active agent in production and productivity. Therefore; employers consider specifically the health of their staff and creating a suitable space in agreement with their physical and psychological characteristics. Librarianship is also among those professions. However; there should be more evidence in order to shed light on the importance of the ergonomic factors for all library managers and policy makers and moreover; make the staff both reach self-awareness and take the right action about the health of their career. The very aim of this study is to find out …

A Novel Method Of Enhancing Grounded Theory Memos With Voice Recording, Rachel Stocker, Helen Close
A Novel Method Of Enhancing Grounded Theory Memos With Voice Recording, Rachel Stocker, Helen Close
The Qualitative Report
In this article the authors present the recent discovery of a novel method of supplementing written grounded theory memos with voice recording, the combination of which may provide significant analytical advantages over solely the traditional written method. Memo writing is an essential component of a grounded theory study, however it is often difficult to capture thoughts, feelings, and emerging theorising using written methods after a research interview. I found that many of these potentially valuable ide as were lost or misunderstood upon reading my subsequent written memo, and the feelings and context which influenced the emerging theory were not always …
The Effect Of Argumentative Task Goal On The Quality Of Argumentative Discourse, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert, Sibel Erduran, Mark Felton
The Effect Of Argumentative Task Goal On The Quality Of Argumentative Discourse, Merce Garcia-Mila, Sandra Gilabert, Sibel Erduran, Mark Felton
Faculty Publications
In argumentative discourse, there are two kinds of activity-dispute and deliberation-that depend on the argumentative task goal. In dispute the goal is to defend a conclusion by undermining alternatives, whereas in deliberation the goal is to arrive at a conclusion by contrasting alternatives. In this study, we examine the impact of these tasks goals on the quality of argumentative discourse. Sixty-five junior high school students were organized into dyads to discuss sources of energy. Dyads were formed by members who had differing viewpoints and were distributed to one of two conditions: 31 dyads were asked to discuss with the goal …

Shared Responsibility In A Multispecies Playground, Marcus Baynes-Rock
Shared Responsibility In A Multispecies Playground, Marcus Baynes-Rock
Between the Species
While conducting research on urbanised hyenas in Harar, Ethiopia, I was approached by a young hyena named Willi. In contrast to other hyenas, who tolerated my presence but otherwise had little interest in me, Willi insisted on some kind of engagement. Through biting, chase play, combing, following and standing by one other, Willi and I went beyond our species limitations and created an improvised intersubjectivity based on a will to understand. However, our friendship led to some harmful consequences for which I felt responsible. This led me to question the ethics of engagement with non-humans: if unforeseen harms can result …
