Building Bridges And Solving Crimes? A Critical Examination Of How Police Use The New Aged Technology Of Social Media - Specifically Facebook, Seyed Raza Mirmajlessi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The social media conglomerate Facebook has dramatically grown over the past few years. As a result, many law enforcement officials -- specifically police -- have taken notice. Recently, this has translated into police departments nationwide adopting Facebook in their daily efforts to improve police performance. Extensive reports from news media outlets have documented the assortment of uses Facebook provides police personnel. It has been reported that police are not only using the tool to prevent crime, but also as an innovative way to engage and interact with the community. In an era of community policing, it is vital to explore …

Private Agri-Food Standards: Contestation, Hybridity And The Politics Of Standards, Carmen Bain, Elizabeth Ransom, Vaughan Higgins Feb 2013

Private Agri-Food Standards: Contestation, Hybridity And The Politics Of Standards, Carmen Bain, Elizabeth Ransom, Vaughan Higgins

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Standards are an omnipresent yet generally taken-for-granted part of our everyday life (Higgins and Larner, 2010a; Timmermans and Epstein, 2010; Busch, 2011). Until recently, standards within the agri-food sector were typically dismissed (if thought of at all) by social scientists as rather benign, technical tools, primarily of interest to specialists concerned with facilitating markets and trade. Over the past decade, however, this assessment has changed considerably and many agri-food scholars now view standards as a useful entry point for analysing and understanding our social and material world. The degree of interest today is reflected in the fact that our call …

Helping Or Hovering? The Effects Of Helicopter Parenting On College Students’ Well-Being, Holly H. Schiffrin, Miriam Liss, Haley Miles-Mclean, Katherine A. Geary, Mindy J. Erchull, Taryn Tashner Feb 2013

Helping Or Hovering? The Effects Of Helicopter Parenting On College Students’ Well-Being, Holly H. Schiffrin, Miriam Liss, Haley Miles-Mclean, Katherine A. Geary, Mindy J. Erchull, Taryn Tashner

Psychological Science Articles

Parental involvement is related to many positive child outcomes, but if not developmentally appropriate, it can be associated with higher levels of child anxiety and depression. Few studies have examined the effects of over-controlling parenting, or “helicopter parenting,” in college students. Some studies have found that college students of over-controlling parents report feeling less satisfied with family life and have lower levels of psychological well-being. This study examined self-determination theory as the potential underlying mechanism explaining this relationship. College students (N = 297) completed measures of helicopter parenting, autonomy supportive parenting, depression, anxiety, satisfaction with life, and basic psychological …

Creating New Partnerships: Strategies For Growing Your Repository, Karen Bjork, Sue Kunda, David Isaak, Kay Vyhnanek

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

This presentation was given February 8 at Online NW 2013 in Corvallis, OR. Academic institutions, as well as private corporations, have taken on the responsibility of building institutional repositories in order to collect, manage, archive and provide access to the intellectual work taking place on their respective campuses. Over the years, building or procuring a repository has become fairly straightforward. Filling it hasn't. Convincing faculty and academic units to contribute their research and scholarship is still a struggle for most repository owners and requires equal parts determination, imagination and perspiration. Join four repository managers from OSU, PSU, WSU and Kaiser …

Flipping The Distance Classroom, Amy R. Hofer Feb 2013

Flipping The Distance Classroom, Amy R. Hofer

Library Faculty and Staff Publications and Presentations

A "flipped classroom" assigns lecture learning for homework and uses in-person class time for hands-on practice with the instructor's support. It's an exciting model, but how can it work for distance students? Portland State University's Senior Inquiry program offers high school seniors a PSU Freshman Inquiry course at their schools for college credit. This lightning talk outlines how the Distance Learning Librarian at PSU used LibGuides, Google Docs, YouTube, and lots of friendly reminders to help teachers flip information literacy instruction for these distance students.

Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker Feb 2013

Teacher Design Using Online Learning Resources: A Comparative Case Study Of Science And Mathematics Teachers, Mimi Recker

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Using a comparative case study design, this paper explores the impacts of a technology-related professional development (TTPD) design aimed at helping science and mathematics teachers design classroom activities using the wealth of resources available on the Internet. Using the lens of curricular adaption and the notion of teachers’ varying pedagogical design capacity, we analyzed the experiences of four teachers in terms of the kinds of instructional activities teachers designed, how these were supported with online resources, and teachers’ perceptions of impacts on student learning. Findings suggested that participants used a variety of personally relevant design strategies when applying TTPD concepts …

The Pedagogical Value Of Polling: A Coordinated 2012 Exit Poll Project Across Diverse Classrooms, Jennifer Kelkres Emery, Alison D. Howard, Jocelyn Evans Feb 2013

The Pedagogical Value Of Polling: A Coordinated 2012 Exit Poll Project Across Diverse Classrooms, Jennifer Kelkres Emery, Alison D. Howard, Jocelyn Evans

Collected Faculty Scholarship

Several previous studies have demonstrated that student exit polling has educational value and promotes civic engagement (Berry and Robinson 2012, Evans and Lagergren 2007, Lelieveldt and Rossen 2009, and others). The authors of this paper have created assignments and an instructor's manual on running student exit polls in undergraduate courses. Three institutions used these assignments during the fall 2012 semester. Working together, these instructors created an opportunity for their students to participate collaboratively with others in survey design and data analysis. This effort further provided assessment data on the effectiveness of this pedagogical approach for student engagement outside of the …

Alternative Funding Models For Nigerian Academic Libraries., Chuma Opara Nnadozie Feb 2013

Alternative Funding Models For Nigerian Academic Libraries., Chuma Opara Nnadozie

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This desk research involved review of available literature on funding of Nigerian Academic Libraries (NALs). The aim was to ascertain the existing sources of funds for these libraries, re-appraise the available funding strategies and provide practicable alternatives. Findings show that the surfeit of ideas, captured in literature, has not positively changed the sorry financial state of academic libraries in Nigeria. As a result, these libraries still rely on sporadic but insufficient financial allocations from their parent institutions and periodic disbursements from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TET-Fund). Whereas receipts from these traditional sources have remained inadequate, the policy-makers and managers …

Seminar – Multi-Pronged Preventives To Curb Elder Neglect : Reconstructing Social Justice And Harmony

Asia Pacific Institute of Ageing Studies Newsletter 亞太老年學研究通訊

There has been raising concems towards elder abuse, which mainly focused on the physical and psychological damages inflicted onto the victims. However, to pay little attention to or to take lightly of elder neglect which usually marks the onset of elder abuse will only result in its escalation into more severe abusive behaviours if the situation continues. In order to prevent the situation from worsening, how should we understand the development of familial relationships? How can we early detect familial crises before they happen? How should we intervene at an earlier stage and help mediate the relationship between the abuser …

From Coca-Cola To Chewing Gum The Applied Psychology Of Harry Hollingworth, Volume 2, Harry Hollingworth, Ludy T. Benjamin, Lizette Royer-Barton

University of Akron Press Publications

Harry Levi Hollingworth was one of the pioneers in the field known today as industrial-organizational psychology. He was the author of more than 20 books and 100 scientific and theoretical articles. His honors were many, including serving as President of the American Psychological Association in 1927. In 1940, at the age of 60 and partly initiated by the sudden death of his wife, Hollingworth took stock of his life in an autobiography that focused on his origins and development in rural Nebraska and his subsequent career as a psychologist at Columbia University. Urban Forest Justice And The Rights To Wild Foods, Medicines, And Materials In The City, Melissa R. Poe, Rebecca J. Mclain, Marla R. Emery, Patrick T. Hurley

Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications

Urban forests are multifunctional socio-ecological landscapes, yet some of their social benefits remain poorly understood. This paper draws on ethnographic evidence from Seattle, Washington to demonstrate that urban forests contain nontimber forest products that contribute a variety of wild foods, medicines, and materials for the well-being of urban residents. We show that gathering wild plants and fungi in urban forests is a persistent subsistence and livelihood practice that provides sociocultural and material benefits to city residents, and creates opportunities for connecting with nature and enhancing social ties. We suggest that an orientation toward human-nature interactions in cities that conceptualizes the …

Estimating The Health And Economic Effects Of Public Health Spending, Glen P. Mays Feb 2013

Estimating The Health And Economic Effects Of Public Health Spending, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

Preventable health conditions account for more than 75% of the $2.7 trillion spent annually on health care in the U.S., yet less than 5% of these expenditures are devoted to public health programs and services that are designed to prevent and control disease and injury rather than to treat the downstream consequences of these conditions. Such limited expenditures in public health may contribute to the higher rates of preventable morbidity, mortality and excess medical costs experienced in the U.S. compared to other high-income countries. In this presentation, I update previous estimates of the health effects and medical cost offsets associated …
