Sweet Freedom: Smokers’ Rights & The Rebranding Of Philip Morris, Amy Dipierro Mar 2013

Sweet Freedom: Smokers’ Rights & The Rebranding Of Philip Morris, Amy Dipierro

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

This paper discusses how Philip Morris invoked strong American values to defend its own corporate speech as well as “smoker’s rights.” In particular, it examines Philip Morris Company’s Bill of Rights advertising campaign of the early 1990s, especially focusing on an advertisement featuring Everett Alvarez, a prisoner of war during Vietnam. This strategy reveals how Philip Morris was able to manipulate the public conversation about smoking from one about health and disease to one about human rights and freedoms.

Polio Eradication: How The War On Terror Has Led To The Persistence Of Polio In Afghanistan, Pakistan, And Nigeria, John Michel Rouhana Mar 2013

Polio Eradication: How The War On Terror Has Led To The Persistence Of Polio In Afghanistan, Pakistan, And Nigeria, John Michel Rouhana

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

In 1988, the World Health Organization (WHO) initiated a campaign to eradicate the polio virus from the world population (Bari 2006). Since 1988, the WHO has used polio vaccines to successfully interrupt transmission of the disease to new individuals in all but three countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria (WHO 2012). This paper examines how The War on Terror, stated by President George W. Bush to be a war against every terrorist group of global reach and the governments that support these groups, has led the populations of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Nigeria, as well as vaccinators and health officials in these …

The Global Ability To Respond: Applying Sars Knowledge To H1n1 And Beyond, Meaghan Drees Mar 2013

The Global Ability To Respond: Applying Sars Knowledge To H1n1 And Beyond, Meaghan Drees

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Influenza outbreaks may be alarming, but they are nothing new in the 21st century. At this point, the various strains of influenza have broken into cities and homes, acted as silent killers by causing fear, death and destruction, and spreading uncontrollably. This repetitive cycle arouses the question of when people will learn how to take care of these epidemics. Well, according to Flahault and Zylberman, knowledge may not be the only factor necessary to stop influenza from disrupting lives. The authors reveal that “Influenza epidemics occur regularly and prediction of their conversion to pandemics and their impact is …

The Birth Control Cascade: How The Policies Affect Access, And Access Affects Outcome, Meghan Nestor Mar 2013

The Birth Control Cascade: How The Policies Affect Access, And Access Affects Outcome, Meghan Nestor

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

With the passing of Affordable Care Act (ACA) in August 2012, oral contraception has become free for all women with a prescription. Unfortunately, many women in the United States are without health insurance making it difficult to benefit from the new law. Many states’ intended restrictions on the ACA make it difficult for women to access birth control. Birth control methods, which are now considered part of standard preventative health care, give women the ability to make their own decisions about family planning. Increased access to birth control can also change many of the grim statistics related to rates of …

The Individual Mandate: The Ultimate Conservative Idea, Erin Ellwanger Mar 2013

The Individual Mandate: The Ultimate Conservative Idea, Erin Ellwanger

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The individual mandate is perhaps the most contested and least popular provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA). The mandate, which requires most Americans to obtain health insurance or pay a penalty, was put in the ACA as a means to increase the number of Americans with access to health care insurance. A poll taken by Gallup in February 2012 revealed that 72% of Americans view the individual mandate as unconstitutional (Gallup poll, 2012). This extreme opposition towards the mandate intrigued me and I was interested in learning where this negativity was stemming from and why it seemed to …

The Effects Of Pre-Existing Illnesses On Pediatric Acute Respiratory Infections In South Africa, Haley Dumke Mar 2013

The Effects Of Pre-Existing Illnesses On Pediatric Acute Respiratory Infections In South Africa, Haley Dumke

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The intent of this study was to explore the effect of pre-existing illnesses on acute respiratory infections, focusing on HIV and malnutrition as infection development risk factors in South African children. It investigates the economic burden imposed by these infections and analyzes how the country’s current socio-economic situation plays a major part in propagating infection development. Pneumonia and RSV were individually examined for their current role in the disease burden and potential methods for reducing incidence of pediatric respiratory infections were evaluated based on effectiveness and affordability for the country of South Africa. Data for this paper was compiled mainly …

The Danger Of Duality: Medicare And Medicaid As A Double Threat, Erica Barnum Mar 2013

The Danger Of Duality: Medicare And Medicaid As A Double Threat, Erica Barnum

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

My paper discusses the topic of dual eligible beneficiaries – a group of some nine million individuals that has rightly earned a reputation for being the most costly, frail, sickly, and vulnerable population. Individuals are considered “dual eligible” when they qualify for the benefits of both government programs of Medicare and Medicaid. The main problem within the dual eligible arena is the lack of coordination between these two programs – the federal government wholly funds Medicare but Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that varies from state to state. Because these programs were not designed to work together and sometimes …

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Clinic-Based Diabetes Management Program In A Community Setting, Justin Lupone Mar 2013

Assessing The Effectiveness Of A Clinic-Based Diabetes Management Program In A Community Setting, Justin Lupone

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Diabetes in the United States occurs in approximately 8% of adults.[i] Diabetes, if not treated, can lead to many health problems such as blindness or loss of physical functioning, sometimes leading to amputation. However, Type 2 diabetes can be cured or kept under control through effective diabetes management. Many Type 2 diabetes patients let their diabetes become out of control through at risk behaviors, such as smoking, and poor diet, which in turn can lead to a worsening of their condition. With effective disease management, patients can avoid more severe effects of the disease and have higher quality of …

Struggling With Caregiving: My Days In Solitary Confinement, Jasmin Tahmaseb-Mcconatha Mar 2013

Struggling With Caregiving: My Days In Solitary Confinement, Jasmin Tahmaseb-Mcconatha

Psychology Faculty Publications

Caregivers often spend months or even years living in what amounts to solitary confinement. In the United States between 30 and 38 million adults, mostly women provide regular ongoing care for a family member or loved one. The stresses and burdens of providing 24 hour care, seven days a week can be debilitating. Caregivers need help. Caregiving is a modern American tragedy.

Fearless: Mike Altman, Michael A. Altman

SURGE

After participating in the 2011 Heston Internship in Uganda working in a community on clean water projects, Mike gained a new interest in Global Health. His interest grew and a few months ago he started an internship with charity: water, an organization working to bring access to clean water throughout the world in a way that attempts to break the traditional donation model. At charity: water, Mike is part of a greater group that is working to more closely connect people to specific water projects through financial transparency and innovative fundraising campaigns. Making A Pitch For Extension, Connie I. Reimers-Hild

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications

This worksheet is being used in a series of Extension Board training throughout Southeast Nebraska. The steps are designed to help Extension Board members connect with their "Extension Why" so they can help "pitch" Extension to others.

Why focus on Why? Because people...

  • Connect with Purpose (The Why Factor)
  • Are Motivated by Personal Fulfillment & Passion (I found this in my research on the Entrepreneurial Learner)
  • Make Most Decisions Based on Emotion

Good luck and let me know if you need any help or have any feedback to share by emailing me (Dr. Connie at [email protected])

An Accounting Exercise For The Shift In Life-Cycle Employment Profiles Of Married Women Born Between 1940 And 1960, Sebastien Buttet, Alice Schoonbroodt Mar 2013

An Accounting Exercise For The Shift In Life-Cycle Employment Profiles Of Married Women Born Between 1940 And 1960, Sebastien Buttet, Alice Schoonbroodt

Publications and Research

Life-cycle employment profiles of married women born between 1940 and 1960 shifted upwards and became flatter. We calibrate a dynamic life-cycle model of employment decisions of married women to assess the quantitative importance of three competing explanations of the change in employment profiles: the decrease and delay in fertility, the increase in relative wages of women to men, and the decline in child-care costs. We find that the decrease and delay in fertility and the decline in child-care cost affect employment very early in life, while increases in relative wages affect employment increasingly with age. Changes in relative wages, in …

Colorado Front Range Parks Location Mapping Website, Leah Alvarado Mar 2013

Colorado Front Range Parks Location Mapping Website, Leah Alvarado

Geography and the Environment: Graduate Student Capstones

With current technology, using location based services has become easier than ever. There are services that can help a person find a home, save money, or even find a bathroom. In Colorado, parks are managed by the park and recreation department of a city, town, county, or by a district. Depending on the city, information on the parks that they service comes in different formats and information varies. Some department have online maps others have a map in a portable document format, and some offer no mapping but, a list of parks. Finding a park with consistent data formats and …

Information Literacy And Epistemological Inquiry, Patrick K. Morgan Mar 2013

Information Literacy And Epistemological Inquiry, Patrick K. Morgan

Faculty Presentations

Information literacy is frequently invoked as leitmotiv in college-level library instruction, a fact which by no means implies a unanimous sense of its “meaning” among teaching librarians. Even a cursory perusal of the library literature demonstrates the importance of the concept, both as an educational paradigm and theoretic stimulus. Notably, despite rising acknowledgment that information literacy grows ever more vital for today’s students, little consideration of its place and purpose within other fields is found in academic publications outside information science. Likewise, information literacy instruction, while acknowledged in core curricula, is frequently marginalized in practice: cramped sessions within other …

The Spectrum Of Reliability: Critical Evaluation Of Sources In The New Information Universe, Jesse Vestermark Mar 2013

The Spectrum Of Reliability: Critical Evaluation Of Sources In The New Information Universe, Jesse Vestermark

Library Scholarship

How can we encourage young researchers to exercise critical thinking about the concepts of “ authority” and “reliability” in the new information universe? As wonderful as the internet is, the democratic and heterogeneous nature of the online world has clouded the ability of today’s students to quickly and clearly determine a given resource’s trustworthiness. This academic panel talk will demonstrate a visual, interactive and scalable classroom-based method of evaluating a myriad of resources and concepts in order to provoke thought and discussion in small settings, and poll-based participation in large ones.

Results show that departments rated higher on community psychology values had a greater number of faculty possessing …

The Influence Of Media On Himba Conceptions Of Dress, Ancestral And Cattle Worship, And The Implications For Culture Change, Austin Sterling Cameron Mar 2013

The Influence Of Media On Himba Conceptions Of Dress, Ancestral And Cattle Worship, And The Implications For Culture Change, Austin Sterling Cameron

Theses and Dissertations

For the Himba, deeply embedded cultural symbols—traditional daily way of life, traditional beliefs about the sacredness of cattle, and religious beliefs of ancestral worship—are of ancient origin and have been retained in their culture throughout all of recorded history. While they still exist in Himba society today, some scholars have observed a potential widespread generational shift in adherence to these core cultural values and beliefs. This study presents the findings of 41 in-depth interviews with members of the Himba tribe in northern Namibia—specifically Opuwo and Otutati—ages 18 to 65. It examines the degree to which cultural differences are emerging as …

The Readability Of Principles Of Macroeconomics Textbooks, Sarah Tinkler, James Woods Mar 2013

The Readability Of Principles Of Macroeconomics Textbooks, Sarah Tinkler, James Woods

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors evaluated principles of macroeconomics textbooks for readability using Coh-Metrix, a computational linguistics tool. Additionally, they conducted an experiment on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Web site in which participants ranked the readability of text samples. There was a wide range of scores on readability indexes both between textbooks and within textbooks. Results from the Mechanical Turk experiment revealed that the Flesch Reading Ease Index does not predict which samples readers will prefer, but readers do prefer samples that are thematically similar, as identified by Latent Semantic Analysis. There were differences in the responses of native and non-native-but-proficient English speakers to …

At The Nexus Of Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Marianne A. Buehler, Anne E. Zald Mar 2013

At The Nexus Of Scholarly Communication And Information Literacy, Marianne A. Buehler, Anne E. Zald

Library Faculty Research

Introduction

Graduate students embarking upon a new phase in their educational careers may not realize the range of expectations, particularly the cocurricular or extracurricular expectation to participate in the scholarly communication process. Unforeseen faculty expectations may include a requirement to publish or copublish an article in order to pass a graduate course or to engage in grant-funded research that will result in conference presentations or publications. Learning about the publication process provides a key transitional experience between the independent intellectual endeavor of conducting research for course assignments and the social dynamics of being a professional researcher or scholar, interacting with …

A Comprehensive Model Of The Intragroup Work Conflict Framework: Examining Substantive Conflict, Information Exchange, Task And Relationship Conflict, And Conflict Management In Relation To Performance Effectiveness, Marc Anthony Lukasik Mar 2013

A Comprehensive Model Of The Intragroup Work Conflict Framework: Examining Substantive Conflict, Information Exchange, Task And Relationship Conflict, And Conflict Management In Relation To Performance Effectiveness, Marc Anthony Lukasik

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The current study was designed to empirically test components of the conflict dynamic within the context of groups or teams. A model was proposed in an attempt to clarify existing construct confusion and misapplication of terminologies throughout the field (e.g., task conflict) as well as to consolidate literatures (e.g., informational diversity, information exchange, task and relationship conflict perceptions, and conflict management) and ultimately clarify several contradictory empirical conclusions regarding the equivocal nature of conflict in relation to team effectiveness outcomes. Information exchange and conflict management processes were proposed to be more directly responsible for the proposed theoretical benefits derived from …
