The Marshmallow Challenge, Connie I. Reimers-Hild Mar 2013

The Marshmallow Challenge, Connie I. Reimers-Hild

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Faculty and Staff Publications

I discovered the Marshmallow Challenge when taking an online course through Stanford called, “A Crash Course in Creativity” with Dr. Tina Seelig (http://venture-lab.org/creativity).

The exercise has been used with groups of all ages from around the world by Tom Wujec, who Seelig calls an, “award-winning designer and innovator” (p. 144).

How do you use the Marshmallow Challenge? I use it in a number of different ways:

  1. As an icebreaker
  2. As a teambuilding exercise
  3. To stimulate creativity and innovation
  4. As an experiential exercise that adds FUN to learning!

Seelig and I have the same thoughts on the importance of …

Vulnerability And Just Desert: A Theory Of Sentencing And Mental Illness, E. Lea Johnston Mar 2013

Vulnerability And Just Desert: A Theory Of Sentencing And Mental Illness, E. Lea Johnston

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article analyzes risks of serious harms posed to prisoners with major mental disorders and investigates their import for sentencing under a just deserts analysis. Drawing upon social science research, the Article first establishes that offenders with serious mental illnesses are more likely than non-ill offenders to suffer physical and sexual assaults, endure housing in solitary confinement, and experience psychological deterioration during their carceral terms. The Article then explores the significance of this differential impact for sentencing within a retributive framework. It first suggests a particular expressive understanding of punishment, capacious enough to encompass foreseeable, substantial risks of serious harm …

Phantom Islands A Collection Of Short Stories, Marie Buckner Mar 2013

Phantom Islands A Collection Of Short Stories, Marie Buckner

Dissertations and Theses

This collection of short stories takes its name from various islands historically believed to exist and at one time or other located on maps, sometimes remaining on them for centuries, but later removed after they were proved to be illusory. Reports of these islands usually came from sailors as they explored new realms, mistaking actual islands for imaginary ones or by geographical error. Illusions can persist unchallenged for ages. A similar yet modern illusion is the persistence of vision, a phenomenon by which an afterimage, say, on a screen, is thought to persist on the retina for approximately one twenty-fifth …

That Thing That You Do: Comment On Joseph Massad’S 'Empire Of Sexuality', Lama Abu-Odeh Mar 2013

That Thing That You Do: Comment On Joseph Massad’S 'Empire Of Sexuality', Lama Abu-Odeh

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Massad’s thesis is simple, in fact, perfect in its simplicity. Empire is a terrible force that wants to penetrate, overpower and hegemonize. It has a center, a headquarters if you like, the West. It functions with two arms: capitalism (later neoliberal) and Euro-American hegemony. The first arm represents the objective drive of capital that transforms sites and cultures as it spreads the market in the shape of commodity exchange. It has become a universal system, Massad contends, though with varying effects on the center (West) from the periphery (rest). Whereas its march on the former has been totally transformative, in …

An Innovative Way To Present Qualitative Work: A Review Of Life After Leaving: The Remains Of Spousal Abuse, Mo Xue Mar 2013

An Innovative Way To Present Qualitative Work: A Review Of Life After Leaving: The Remains Of Spousal Abuse, Mo Xue

The Qualitative Report

Life after Leaving is an innovative, creative, and amazing autoethnographic work in which Tamas explores how women struggle to make sense of loss, get recovery, and experience the loving, longing, fear, uncertainties, trust, hope, and frustration after leaving spousal abuse in the form of a performative and arts - based dramatic story. In this paper I review this book mainly from two aspects: data trustworthiness and data analysis. For qualitative researchers and our doctoral students in education or social studies, the success of this book would encourage all of us to bravely use various and more advanced approach to present …

Hand - I Coordination: Interpreting Student Writings And Drawings As Expressions Of Identity, Inda Schaenen Mar 2013

Hand - I Coordination: Interpreting Student Writings And Drawings As Expressions Of Identity, Inda Schaenen

The Qualitative Report

In schools where curricular constraints and testing pressures narrow the ways in which students can take up identities as writers, longterm enrichment programs offer opportunities for the meaningful design of compositions. This paper, which presents the work of four elementary student participants in a writing workshop, shows how qualitative inquiry -- in particular critical multimodal analysis -- can enable a teacher researcher to see, interpret, and explain what might be going on in the writings and drawings of students, and how these illuminations help establish and expand the identities of students as writers. I focus especially on the work of …

Recruiting Ethnically Diverse Participants Into Qualitative Health Research: Lessons Learned, Hagar Renert, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Nancy Arthur Mar 2013

Recruiting Ethnically Diverse Participants Into Qualitative Health Research: Lessons Learned, Hagar Renert, Shelly Russell-Mayhew, Nancy Arthur

The Qualitative Report

The inclusion of ethnically diverse populations in health research is crucial for addressing ethnic disparities in health status and care. Despite this need, non - dominant ethnic groups continue to be under - represented in health studies. The reasons may be at least partly du e to the difficulties inherent in recruiting such groups for research. In this article, we attempt to assist researchers , who are seeking to conduct inclusive qualitative health research , by sharing some of the lessons we learned in the process of recruiting ethnically diverse immigrant women for a qualitative study on the experience of …

Revolution Or Evolution: The Development Of The Concern For The Preservation Of Information Uncovered During Archaeological Excavations In Israel And Palestine (1890-1980), Leif Fredheim Mar 2013

Revolution Or Evolution: The Development Of The Concern For The Preservation Of Information Uncovered During Archaeological Excavations In Israel And Palestine (1890-1980), Leif Fredheim

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

The ICCROM conference of 1983 in Nicosia represents a turning point in the profession of archaeological conservation; here it was expressed that conservators no longer were concerned only with the preservation of excavated objects, but also with archaeological information. This study of the development of concern for the preservation of information from archaeological excavations in Palestine traces the discipline from Flinders Petrie’s first stratigraphic excavation in the region at the end of the nineteenth century to the heyday of American processual archaeology. Special attention is paid to the development of professionalism in the discipline, as made evident by the archaeologists’ …

Surviving The Journey Home: Social Support And Student Sojourner, Juliana Mcgraw, Lauren Brooks, Megan Myers, Andrew Vizcarra, Daphni Edwards, Eduardo Arroyo, Alberto Hernandez

Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research

A small, southeastern Christian university has two independent programs for students studying abroad or serving as missionaries for an academic year. This study examines the correlation between perceived support students felt from their university and their academic success in their first returning semester. Because of the differences in these programs our research sought to examine student perceived support before, during and after their year abroad with GPA before and after their experience. No correlation was found between perceived support and academic success, but findings showed that neither group of student sojourners felt significantly supported during the year abroad. Study abroad …

Stepfamily Functioning And Closeness: Children's Views On Second Marriages And Stepfather Relationships, Todd M. Jensen, Kevin Shafer Mar 2013

Stepfamily Functioning And Closeness: Children's Views On Second Marriages And Stepfather Relationships, Todd M. Jensen, Kevin Shafer

Faculty Publications

Current research on stepfamily well-being often overlooks the perspective of children, and deals primarily with factors as reported by the adults involved. The authors examine a number of family role characteristics, parental subsystem characteristics, and resources that might influence how children perceive the quality of their stepfamily relationships. A sample of 1,088 children in households with a mother and stepfather, ages 10 to 16 years, in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1979 cohort—Children and Young Adult Sample, is used for the analyses. Results indicate that open communication between children and their mothers, low amounts of arguing between mothers and …

A Developing Say Against Aids, Joanna Rydzefski Mar 2013

A Developing Say Against Aids, Joanna Rydzefski

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Lack of access to medicines is a hurdle for many countries, especially developing nations, in their fight against serious health problems. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has frequently been scrutinized regarding its impact on access to essential medicines after its Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) created a framework for the protection of physical and intellectual goods. The main goal of TRIPS is to promote scientific development through patents, but the repercussions of this monopoly over drug production sparked opposition from developing nations, specifically Brazil and South Africa (Dounis 2011, 3). This paper aims to explore how …

Ethical Issues In The Drug Approval Process, Meghan Mcinnis Mar 2013

Ethical Issues In The Drug Approval Process, Meghan Mcinnis

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) drug approval process carries great significance for both pharmaceutical companies and for patients. In recent decades, there has been a shift towards expedited approval so that drugs, especially those for terminally ill patients, can be brought to market faster. However, the FDA still has the responsibility of protecting patients from harm. The case studies of two drugs, Vioxx and Avastin, highlight several of the ethical and practical issues of the drug approval process, including the nature of clinical trial research, the risk-benefit analysis of new treatments, the growth of Contract Research Organizations (CROs) and …

“Listen Carefully:” A Study Of Ageist Stereotypes And Undergraduates’ Desire To Work With Elders, Genevieve Ilg Mar 2013

“Listen Carefully:” A Study Of Ageist Stereotypes And Undergraduates’ Desire To Work With Elders, Genevieve Ilg

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

“Listen Carefully:” A Study of Ageist Stereotypes and Undergraduates’ Desire to Work with Elders identifies and assesses how prior experience with elders and ageist stereotypes informs the degree to which undergraduates are inclined (or disinclined) to consider geriatrics as a potential career. Current literature indicates a lack of interest among social workers and other allied-health professionals in working with this demographic. Here, the “generation gap” not only pertains to the differences between younger people and their elders, but to the gap between the aging population’s increasing demand of need and how many individuals plan to serve the elderly. For this …

Combating The Stigmatization Of Leprosy: How The First Decade Of The Star’S Publication Made The Case For Romantic Relationships And The Preservation Of Domestic Life In The Carville Leprosarium, Gabriela Reed Mar 2013

Combating The Stigmatization Of Leprosy: How The First Decade Of The Star’S Publication Made The Case For Romantic Relationships And The Preservation Of Domestic Life In The Carville Leprosarium, Gabriela Reed

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The stigmatization of leprosy has long been acknowledged as one of the primary obstacles to not only effectively treating leprous patients on a physical level, but also achieving their integration and acceptance into society. The Carville Leprosarium, founded as the Louisiana Leper Home in 1894, and the intense ostracism that it institutionalized, demonstrate one of the most influential expressions of this stigma. However, Carville residents were not passive in accepting their fate. The Star, a magazine founded by Stanley Stein and subsequently published in conjunction with his fellow residents, worked to combat such stigma. Building on the work of …

Terrains Of Terror And Modern Apparatuses Of Destruction: Organ Transplantation, Markets, And The Commoditized Kidney, Ayan Kassim Mar 2013

Terrains Of Terror And Modern Apparatuses Of Destruction: Organ Transplantation, Markets, And The Commoditized Kidney, Ayan Kassim

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Recent innovations in biomedicine and medical technologies within the last 40 years have altered understandings of the body and its parts; burgeoning global markets in organs is symptomatic of this. Although procurement policies by most nations solicit organs through donation only, lengthy wait lists have prompted the fiscally privileged sick to pursue other means of survival. In light of the current global realities of kidney trafficking in particular, this paper considers the following questions: How and why has the kidney become a commodity? In what historical moment did a kidney market emerge? What and who are the key actors in …

Vocalizing The Vindications Of Our Veterans: Evaluating The Needs Of Our Returning Soldiers, Alexandra Rawson Mar 2013

Vocalizing The Vindications Of Our Veterans: Evaluating The Needs Of Our Returning Soldiers, Alexandra Rawson

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

The soldiers of the United States devote their lives, families, and careers in order to ensure our limitless opportunities of liberty and justice. It is therefore our duty, as grateful citizens of America to meet their needs upon return from war. This research evaluates the effects that Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder places on the returning soldiers. This study proposes that in order to support our veterans, there must be established policies that will accommodate for their mental health conditions as well as the required treatments that pertain to such diagnosis. In an effort to evaluate the necessary treatments and conditions needed …

High School And College Athletes Should Be Required To Undergo Pre-Participation Cardiac Screening Prior To Participation In Competitive Sports, Kathleen Harrington Mar 2013

High School And College Athletes Should Be Required To Undergo Pre-Participation Cardiac Screening Prior To Participation In Competitive Sports, Kathleen Harrington

Annual Undergraduate Conference on Health and Society

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in young athletes. Most of these athletes are unaware they have a condition that puts them at risk. In addition it is estimated that approximately 1 in 220,000 young athletes experience Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) each year, although, these numbers are not truly reliable because there is no national mandatory reporting system in the United States. My paper argues that all high school and college athletes should be required to undergo pre-participation cardiac screening (i.e. an ECG and extensive family health history) as a part of a required physical exam …
