Self-Forgiveness Interventions For Women Experiencing A Breakup, Kathryn Campana Apr 2010

Self-Forgiveness Interventions For Women Experiencing A Breakup, Kathryn Campana

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effectiveness of an intervention designed to increase self forgiveness for women who have recently experienced a romantic relationship breakup. Of particular interest were the interactions between adult attachment style, treatment condition, and time. The current study examined how the following variables differ between attachment style groups and how they change over time with respect to treatment condition: aspects of the former relationship, emotional responses to personal transgressions within the relationship, general negative and positive affect, dispositional forgivingness, positive and negative attitudes toward self, feelings of unforgiveness toward self and ex-partner, and feelings of forgiveness of self …

The Significance Of Error Type In Text-Based Person Perception, John W. Harden Apr 2010

The Significance Of Error Type In Text-Based Person Perception, John W. Harden

Undergraduate Research Conference

Previous research has suggested that errors of spelling can somewhat negatively impact reader perceptions of an author's writing and cognitive abilities (e.g., Kreiner, Schnakenberg, Green, Costello, & McClin 2002; Harden, Johnson, West, & Lancaster 2009). Past research, however, has not take into account the differences inherent in certain error types. The current research sought to extend upon previous findings with the inclusion of a new error type. The new error type is referred to as an error of orthography, and is operationally defined as an error of spelling that might impact the context of the sentence to which it belongs …

Light The Way To Meeting Success!, Tarsha Gibson, Scott Johnson, Jane Polvadore, Courtney Short

Undergraduate Research Conference

A great opportunity exists for organizations to improve meeting efficiency. There are approximately 11 million meetings everyday in the United States. Meetings accomplish most business. Lack of a clear agenda, lack of 100% engagement by all participants, and lack of decisions are common problems plaguing most meetings. Biss Enterprises, a human resource support company in Dallas, Texas, will achieve these goals through a workshop, “Light the Way to Meeting Success,” which teaches a systematic curriculum.

Back To The Future: Going To The World’S Fair!, Shellen Xiao Wu Apr 2010

Back To The Future: Going To The World’S Fair!, Shellen Xiao Wu

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Once upon a time, world’s fairs displayed the glory, wealth, and reach of European empires and those who wished to emulate them. Countries from Asia, Africa, and South America set up booths presenting ”native” products, alongside the latest steam engines, repeating rifles and other technological wonders of the “advanced” nations. The first World’s Fair in London in 1851 brought the translucent Crystal Palace; the Eiffel Tower served as the entrance arch to the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1889; in 1893 the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago symbolized America’s entry into the ranks of powers.

In ten days, the Shanghai Expo …

The First Thing We Do, Let's Deregulate All The Lawyers, Clifford Winston

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

This presentation will discuss lawyers as an influential interest group on the formation of public policy and as a recipient of large economic rents. Cliff will argue that deregulating entry into the legal profession will reduce lawyers' rents and their incentive to support inefficient policies.

The Impact Of Imagined Reactions On Feelings About Disclosing Stigmatized Vs. Non-Stigmatized Beliefs, David Briley Apr 2010

The Impact Of Imagined Reactions On Feelings About Disclosing Stigmatized Vs. Non-Stigmatized Beliefs, David Briley

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Past research has shown that people tend to conceal some aspects of their status (e.g., HIV positive diagnosis, homosexual orientation) because they fear that they will be stigmatized (Chaudoir, 2009), however little to no research exists regarding the divulgence of beliefs that may be stigmatized (e.g., belief in Bigfoot, ghosts, unconventional religious beliefs). My thesis extends research on concealable stigmatized status to research on stigmatized beliefs, by examining the degree to which people’s feelings about disclosure of stigmatized beliefs are impacted by anticipated responses from other people. I investigated this issue by asking participants to write about either a conventional …

Assessing The Productive Efficiency Of Us Health Care: Comparison Of Analytical Methods, Amanda C. Clayton Apr 2010

Assessing The Productive Efficiency Of Us Health Care: Comparison Of Analytical Methods, Amanda C. Clayton

Honors Projects

In 2006, the US spent approximately 15.8% of its GDP on health care, more than any other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) country and considerably larger than the 9.1% average of the 23 other peer nations included in this study (OECD Health Data, 2009). The US also had the lowest female and male life expectancies at birth compared to the same 23 OECD nations (OECD Health Data, 2009). This raw and partial evidence suggests that the US health care system may be performing inefficiently. The purpose of my research is to assess the efficiency of the US health …

Labor Market Outcomes For Middle Eastern Immigrants In The Aftermath Of The September 11th Attacks, Mujtaba A. Isani Apr 2010

Labor Market Outcomes For Middle Eastern Immigrants In The Aftermath Of The September 11th Attacks, Mujtaba A. Isani

Honors Projects

Media reports all over the USA reported that a wave of Islamophobia had gripped the USA after the September 11, 2001 attacks. It seemed as though the American population were blaming not the radicals but the Middle Easterners and the Muslims in general for the inhumane act. Some reports even suggested a new sort of McCarthyism in the USA but this time against the Middle Eastern populace. This paper investigates whether such discrimination transformed itself in the US labor market by conducting an econometric analysis, taking Becker’s taste for discrimination theory as its theoretical basis. It first analyzes whether there …

Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson Apr 2010

Epicene Pronoun Use In Modern American English, Robin Montgomery Watson

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional prescriptive grammar for English states that the epicene or gender neutral pronoun for third person singular use is he. Research into speaker perceptions has clearly demonstrated that he is not perceived as neutral. Research has also shown traditionally proscribed epicene pronouns such as he or she and singular they to be commonly used, despite the long-standing proscriptions against them. The author examines the endurance of such proscribed options through the lens of markedness theory, considering the impact of cultural values on speakers' epicene pronoun choices. Gender in language is also considered, as well as Kuryłowicz‘s 4th Law of …
