Reading Round-Up: China In The World

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

A grab bag of readings around the web that we wanted to share — loosely connected by a “China in the world” theme that the site editors have been thinking about a lot lately, as we’ve begun discussing the possibility of a secondChina Beat book to follow up China in 2008: A Year of Great Significance. Though it’s presently more an idea than a plan, now it seems that everywhere we look, we see China Beatniks being talked about in different parts of the world, connecting China with different parts of the world, and simply moving from writing about China …

New Age, Old Discourse: National Geographic, Orientialism, And Coverage Of Afghanistan In The 21st Century, Brandon Hensley Apr 2010

New Age, Old Discourse: National Geographic, Orientialism, And Coverage Of Afghanistan In The 21st Century, Brandon Hensley

2010 Awards for Excellence in Student Research & Creative Activity - Documents

This paper explores National Geographic magazine's coverage of Afghanistan in 2002. In total, 7 of the 12 issues from 2002 have articles about Afghanistan regarding the war, continuous hardship and unrest, and an Afghan woman refugee with green eyes who was on the cover in 1985 and disappeared until 2002. Through a critical examination of these articles as textual representations of the Orient, I intend to draw upon Said's framework of Orientalism to explore how the discourse in National Geographic coverage of Afghanistan is embedded in a hegemonic reproduction of the indigenous other and the West's "benevolent" role in stabilizing …

The Anchor, Volume 123.21: April 21, 2010, Hope College

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Without a doubt, violence continues to be a brutal reality in our society. It reaches and affects millions across our nation and around the world. Turn It Up To Eleven: A Study Of Guitar Hero And Rockband: Why People Play Them And How Marketers Can Use This Information, Timothy J. Hemingway Apr 2010

Turn It Up To Eleven: A Study Of Guitar Hero And Rockband: Why People Play Them And How Marketers Can Use This Information, Timothy J. Hemingway

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to first understand why individuals play Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Several motivational factors are looked at including fantasy, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and the desire to play a real instrument. In addition to the motivation factors, the communication theories of uses and gratifications and deficient self-regulation are used to define the gamers who play Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Once the paper defines a theoretical framework, a survey is used to test the variables. The significant findings are then discussed and suggestions are made as to how these games can more effectively be used as marketing …

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample Apr 2010

Intergenerational Transfer Of Human Capital Among Immigrant Families, Kelsey Hample

Honors Projects

While immigrants in the United States tend to earn less than comparable natives, their children close the earnings gap. The purpose of this study is to determine how differences in intergenerational transfer of human capital between immigrant families and native families affect different earning outcomes for respondents of each group. Specifically, this study uses a human capital framework to analyze both the direct effect of parental education on respondent earnings and the indirect effect on earnings by first affecting respondent education, which in turn affects respondent earnings. Data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth allows background variables within …

Nurturing Failure: Creating A Risk-Tolerant Library Culture That Embraces Change And Innovation, Christopher Sweet Apr 2010

Nurturing Failure: Creating A Risk-Tolerant Library Culture That Embraces Change And Innovation, Christopher Sweet

Scholarly Publications

The culture of success is pervasive in our society. It is unacceptable to get anything other than an “A”. “Win at all costs.” “No room for error.” At the same time, we know that great inventions always come after a long string of failures. In the corporate world, a few very successful companies and entrepreneurs have learned that calculated risk and the freedom to fail are the keys to innovation and progress. This webcast will examine how creating a risk-tolerant culture can aid in keeping academic libraries both vibrant and relevant in the current economy.

Whose Identity? The Responsibilities Of Museums In The Representation Of The Past And Present, Stephanie Allen Apr 2010

Whose Identity? The Responsibilities Of Museums In The Representation Of The Past And Present, Stephanie Allen

Sociology and Anthropology Honors Theses

The goal of this thesis is to investigate the nature of cultural identity as represented in, and connected to museums and the artifacts they contain. In particular, I will focus on the different ways anthropologists, archaeologists and many museums approach the problem of representation within a museum setting. Based upon a review of the literature within the fields of anthropology, museum studies, and archaeology, I will discuss how cultural identity is constructed and represented in a museum setting, demonstrating that the collective identities of both those who view archaeological collections, and the descendents of those represented may be influenced by …

Tiered Pricing And Cost Functions: Are Equity, Cost Recovery And Economic Efficiency Compatible Goals?, Karina Schoengold Apr 2010

Tiered Pricing And Cost Functions: Are Equity, Cost Recovery And Economic Efficiency Compatible Goals?, Karina Schoengold

Cornhusker Economics

Suppliers of water and energy are frequently natural monopolies, with their pricing regulated by governmental agencies. Pricing schemes are evaluated by the efficiency of the resource allocation they lead to, the capacity of the utilities to capture their costs and the distributional effects of the policies, in particular, impacts on the poor. One pricing approach has been average cost pricing, which guarantees cost recovery and allows utilities to provide their product at relatively low prices. However, average cost pricing leads to economically inefficient consumption levels, when sources of water and energy are limited and increasing the supply is costly. An …

These new alignments are essential in this environment of constant change, and are particularly crucial regarding faculty and support of their teaching and research. This presentation gives examples of the Boise State University ScholarWorks institutional repository+ services and how those services support the mission, vision, and strategic priorities of the university.

Qinghai Earthquake Stories In Translation Apr 2010

Qinghai Earthquake Stories In Translation

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

•At his blog, Bruce Humes compares a Newsweek story on the earthquake’s aftermath, “A Sympathetic Hearing,” with its Chinese translation appearing inCankao Xiaoxi (参考消息), finding that quite a bit got edited out and altered. Highlights of the Cankao Xiaoxi version, summarized by Humes:

•Quotes from China social commentator Yang Hengjun are cut to ribbons and then spliced, partly to remove references to anti-Tibetan prejudice among Han, arguably fostered by China’s own media coverage (“It’s very hard to see real Tibetans…on TV, they’re dancing all the time, shaking hands with leaders, celebrating, or shown as troublemakers.”)

•Chinese people don’t “Tweet” (even …
