Leadership And The Theory Of Metacommunication, Regina M. Brown
Leadership And The Theory Of Metacommunication, Regina M. Brown
Theses and Graduate Projects
Effective leadership communication goes beyond the study and process of organizational communication. The purpose of this research is to conceptualize effective leadership communication as a multifaceted concept that is best understood from its diverse perspectives concurrently. In order to illuminate this concept, the term metacommunication will be coined, borrowing from Freud's metapsychology theory. The metacommunication theory informs the study of leadership emergence, development, and effectiveness by looking at the phenomenon in a holistic manner. The leader as CAS along with the environmental factors effecting leadership is better viewed and understood by acknowledging and respecting the complexity of the human condition. …

Shanghai’S Expo: What Everyone Needs To Know
Shanghai’S Expo: What Everyone Needs To Know
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
In exactly one week, the countdown clocks in Shanghai will all finally hit zero. This is because this year May Day will also be Opening Day for the 2010 World Expo, an event that has been largely ignored in the United States (at least until very recently), but has been the subject of an enormous amount of advance publicity (and hype) within China, in part because it will be that country’s first World Fair and the first large-scale spectacle held there since the giant National Day parades of last year and the Beijing Games of 2008. It is an event …

The Construction Of An Elementary Music Curriculum Utilizing Backward Design And Bloom’S Taxonomy, Jessica P. Warner
The Construction Of An Elementary Music Curriculum Utilizing Backward Design And Bloom’S Taxonomy, Jessica P. Warner
Senior Honors Theses
Based on the philosophy that the development of curriculum should provide a framework for the assessment of student learning, backward design was utilized to develop a curriculum review for an elementary music program. This design worked directly with three levels of Bloom’s taxonomy (knowledge, application, and synthesis) in order to demonstrate the level of learning for three grades in a small, private mid-Atlantic elementary school. Fifteen students were assessed using the rubrics both before and after curriculum implementation, and analyses were conducted to determine what changes resulted from the focused, short-term curriculum. A plan of improvement was then developed for …

Consumer Perceptions & Video Game Sales: A Meeting Of The Minds, John Sacranie
Consumer Perceptions & Video Game Sales: A Meeting Of The Minds, John Sacranie
Honors Projects
This paper examines the determinants of video game software sales. What literature currently exists points to an array of factors, ranging from which hardware a title is released on to the game’s genre. This paper incorporates several of these variables, but adds in a new one: quality. Literature up to this point has not addressed the effect that a game’s quality has on its eventual sales, yet one would logically expect this to have a strong positive impact. To account for quality, the model incorporates the average review score a game receives from professional critics. The results indicate that indeed, …

Faith-Based Sexual Education: A Comparison Of Comprehensive And Abstinence-Only Programs, Leanna Fortunato
Faith-Based Sexual Education: A Comparison Of Comprehensive And Abstinence-Only Programs, Leanna Fortunato
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study sought to evaluate the effects of faith-based sexual education programs. Participants (ages 13-18, N = 128) were surveyed regarding their religious and sexual attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors prior to completing a sexual education program at their church, synagogue, or religious institution and again after completing the program. The sexual education programs were divided into three groups based on program content and duration: abstinence-only-short, comprehensive-short, and comprehensive-long. The first goal was to assess the within-group effects of attending an abstinence-only or comprehensive sexual education program. Participants from all three groups showed an increase in the degree to which they …
The Effect Of Power On Exploratory Behavior, William Clay
The Effect Of Power On Exploratory Behavior, William Clay
Theses and Dissertations
The relations between power, exploratory behavior, and willingness to take risks were investigated. It was hypothesized that high power would be associated with increases in exploratory behavior, and that this relationship would be mediated by participants’ willingness to take risks. In Study One, one-hundred forty-one undergraduates (66% female) completed questionnaires to assess trait power and willingness to take risk, as well as a computer-based research paradigm, BeanFest, to assess exploration. Willingness to take risks correlated positively with exploration. However, the predicted relations involving power were not observed. In Study Two, power was experimentally manipulated. One-hundred thirty-three undergraduates (61% female) were …

A Pesquisa Sobre Tecnologias De Comunicação No Brasil E Na América Latina / The Research About Technology Of Development Communication In Brazil And Latin America, Emile G. Mcanany
Communication

Behavioral Patterns Of Mustelus Canis (Smooth Dogfish Shark) In A Captive Population, Megan Christine Vaupel
Behavioral Patterns Of Mustelus Canis (Smooth Dogfish Shark) In A Captive Population, Megan Christine Vaupel
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Mustelus canis, or the smooth dogfish shark, is the second most common species of shark inhabiting the coastal waters of the Western Atlantic. However little is known about the behavior of this species in the wild and in captivity. In an attempt to establish some data on the behaviors of these animals, I observed a captive population of dogfish at the Indianapolis zoo. I quantified the activity level and distribution of the dogfish in various areas of the exhibit, as well as the frequency and durations of stationary ("resting'') behavior. I analyzed these results in the context of several factors, …
The Accuracy Of Self-Reported Intuitive And Analytical Ability, Jennifer A. Sobyra
The Accuracy Of Self-Reported Intuitive And Analytical Ability, Jennifer A. Sobyra
Honors Projects
The current study aimed to establish whether individuals can accurately report their experiential (intuitive) and rational (analytical) processing abilities on the Rational-Experiential Inventory (REI) in relation to their performance on the Serial Reaction Time (SRT) and the Operation Span (Ospan) tasks. Previous research has indicated that the rational subscale may have predictive validity, but evidence of the predictive validity of the experiential subscale is mixed. To determine why previous researchers have struggled to establish this link, the current study introduced a manipulation of the knowledge of the psychological definition of intuition and its value in cognitive processing. The researcher hypothesized …
Effects Of Explanatory Autism Disclosure On Coworker Attitudes, Kathleen M. Henegan
Effects Of Explanatory Autism Disclosure On Coworker Attitudes, Kathleen M. Henegan
Honors Projects
People with autism tend to have difficulties with the social relationships in the workplace, which are a crucial aspect to maintaining employment. In this study, we investigated whether disclosure of an autism spectrum disorder would improve adults’ attitudes toward a potential coworker with autism. Participants (93 college students, 93 working adults) were randomly assigned to read one of three vignettes describing the same interaction with a potential coworker with moderately severe ASD, but different levels of disclosure. As hypothesized, disclosure, as compared to no disclosure, led significantly more positive attitudes toward and higher willingness to work with the coworker. Disclosure …

How European Is The European Central Bank's Monetary Policy?, Teodora D. Petrova
Honors Projects
Ever since its establishment in 1999, the European Central Bank worked on maintaining relative price stability mainly through inflation targeting. The ECB aims at a target inflation rate below but close to 2%. However, the diversity among the member states in the European Union and the Eurozone requires not only collective attention on the EU economy but also on each individual member state. Some Eurozone member states experience generally higher levels of inflation and higher unemployment. On the other side are countries like Germany which are more concerned with maintaining low inflation only. Many economists and politicians criticize the ECB …
Examining Success At The Domestic Box-Office In The Motion Picture Industry, Patrick Topf
Examining Success At The Domestic Box-Office In The Motion Picture Industry, Patrick Topf
Honors Projects
The movie business is a multi-billion dollar industry involving production crews, marketing crews, actors, directors, distribution companies, movie theaters, and movie rental companies, but while each movie created follows the same routine, why do some perform so much better than others at the box-office? Why did Juno become a smash hit, while Poseidon is regarded as a major box-office bomb? This study investigates the impact of production cost, star power, professional reviews, release date, sequels, genre, age-rating, and distribution company on total domestic box-office revenue of the widely released films from January 2006 to December 2008.
The Effects Of Marital Status & Gender On Health Care Insurance Coverage In The United States, Jessica S. T. Kong
The Effects Of Marital Status & Gender On Health Care Insurance Coverage In The United States, Jessica S. T. Kong
Honors Projects
Having health insurance is a crucial factor for many to sustain life in America. This study examines the demographic determinants of health care coverage within the United States with a focus on how gender and marital status influence the likelihood of having health insurance. Using the human capital theory and the theory of statistical discrimination, it is predicted that married females will have a higher probability of being insured than divorced and separated females. Also, divorced males are predicted to have a higher probability of coverage than divorced females. The data for this research is retrieved from the United States …
White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Chicago, Lindsey Haines
Honors Projects
White flight and urban decay are issues typically analyzed in the context of the inner-city. This study builds on previous literature to test whether these phenomena have affected the Chicago suburbs in the same way as other urban areas. In particular, this study focuses on the effects of changes in racial composition, household income, and the age of the housing stock on changes in home values, the vacancy rate, the homeownership rate, unemployment, the single parent household rate, and the college completion rate. Overall the study supports the theories of white flight and filtering in the suburban Chicago context. The …
