Shortly after German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s repudiation of multiculturalism, the Soros Foundation announced the winners of its Fellowships for New Americans—an award for graduate study for foreign-born students whose career paths show initiative, accomplishment, and “commitment to the values expressed in the U.S. Constitution.” Dozens of America’s best and brightest are pursuing degrees in law, medicine, public policy, business, and the arts that will immensely enrich our national and global communities.

Bad behavior is not new, but the prevalence of incivility seems a rising tide in the public arena. Passionate outbursts at a public input meeting and planned protest to disrupt meetings are captured with increasing frequency on today’s omnipresent electronic media. The negative invective allowed/encouraged during political campaigns seems to carry over to public input meetings and other places intended for the measured, deliberative processes of governance. The Web of Data currently coming into existence through the Linked Open Data (LOD) effort is a major milestone in realizing the Semantic Web vision. However, the development of applications based on LOD faces difficulties due to the fact that the different LOD datasets are rather loosely connected pieces of information. In particular, links between LOD datasets are almost exclusively on the level of instances, and schema-level information is being ignored. Objective To examine reliability and validity data for the Family Interaction Macro-coding System (FIMS) with adolescents with spina bifida (SB), adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), and healthy adolescents and their families. Methods  Sixty-eight families of children with SB, 58 families of adolescents with T1DM, and 68 families in a healthy comparison group completed family interaction tasks and self-report questionnaires. Trained coders rated family interactions using the FIMS. Results Acceptable interrater and scale reliabilities were obtained for FIMS items and subscales. Observed FIMS parental acceptance, parental behavioral control, parental psychological control, family cohesion, and family conflict scores demonstrated convergent …

We replicate the essentials of the Huettel et al. (2006) experiment on choice under uncertainty with 30 Yale undergraduates, where subjects make 200 pair-wise choices between risky and ambiguous lotteries. Inferences about the independence of economic preferences for risk and ambiguity are derived from estimation of a mixed logit model, where the choice probabilities are functions of two random effects: the proxies for risk-aversion and ambiguity-aversion. [Our principal empirical finding is that we cannot reject the null hypothesis that risk and ambiguity are independent in economic choice under uncertainty. We analyze the canonical nonlinear pricing model with limited information. A seller offers a menu with a finite number of choices to a continuum of buyers with a continuum of possible valuations. By revealing an underlying connection to quantization theory, we derive the optimal finite menu for the socially efficient and the revenue-maximizing mechanism. In both cases, we provide an estimate of the loss resulting from the usage of a finite n-class menu. We show that the losses converge to zero at a rate proportional to 1/n2 asn becomes large.

Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查

Lingnan University’s Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) today announced survey findings of the “Hong Kong Happiness Index 2010”. According to the survey, Hong Kong people in 2010 continue to enjoy high levels of happiness similar to what they enjoyed in the previous year, with the overall happiness index at 70.1, not much different from the 2009 level of 70.6 and well above the trough of 67.2 seen in 2007.

The survey was conducted by CPPS from Oct 18 to Oct 22 2010 via randomized phone calls. The research team successfully interviewed 834 Hong Kong residents aged 21 or above. …

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This is the third volume in the series of final reports on the extensive IAA excavations in the Lower City of Maresha during 1989–2000. A short report is given of the excavation of the complexes in which the epigraphic material was found. The epigraphic material includes Semitic ostraca, vessel and ostraca graffiti, and Greek-inscribed altars. Also described here are lead weights, their production, standards and historical implications. The processes of urbanization – economy, sociology and town planning – are explored based on the epigraphic finds, and finally, the ethnic, cultural and historical implications are presented.

Instruction Librarians from the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) will describe their creation, design, and teaching of a three credit hour undergraduate course that focuses on the development of information literacy skills. The course, “LIB 103: Introduction to Library Research and Technology”, is required for UNCW’s Information Technology minor, which is offered by the university’s Department of Computer Science. This interdisciplinary course exposes students to aspects of media literacy, critical thinking, information evaluation, research skills, various information technologies, and current issues in the information age. A Librarian and an English Professor combined their Community College classes into a learning community. Unlike most such collaborations, the two classes were scheduled back-to-back, blending their syllabi into one. The class was conducted as an integrated whole, with Information Literacy components scattered throughout the semester to facilitate learning the material at the most opportune time within the English curriculum. Greater student success resulted. This PowerPoint presentation will cover insights gained in collaborating with another faculty member to create a learning community, obstacles that may arise, and why this can be successful. Information handouts will be provided.

In a world that is saturated with questionable scientific information, producing information literate students should be the goal of every institution of higher learning. There are numerous studies that detail why information literacy should be integrated into the curriculum; however, there are few examples of how to do so. At James Madison University information literacy was successfully integrated into the Biology major. This presentation will include highlights from a workshop, in class presentations, and the development of an assessment instrument as well as an analysis of the overall success of this evolving partnership between librarians and teaching faculty.

Rodgers (2010) recently applauded a revolution involving the increased use of statistical modeling techniques. It is argued that such use may have a downside, citing empirical evidence in educational psychology that modeling techniques are often applied in cross-sectional, correlational studies to produce unjustified causal conclusions and prescriptive statements.

A primary objective of a phase II trial is to determine future development is warranted for a new treatment based on whether it has sufficient activity against a specified type of tumor. Limitations exist in the commonly-used hypothesis setting and the standard test procedure for a phase II trial. This study reformats the hypothesis setting to mirror the clinical decision process in practice. The median confidence interval is useful for one parameter families, such as the exponential distribution, and it may not need to be adjusted if censored observations are present. In this article, two estimators for the median of the exponential distribution, MD, are considered and compared based on the sample median and the maximum likelihood method. The first estimator is the sample median, MD₁, and the second estimator is the maximum likelihood estimator of the median, MD_MLE. The parameters of the multiple linear regression are estimated using least squares ( B̂_LS ) and unbiased ridge regression methods (B̂(KI,J)). Data was created for fourteen independent variables with four different values of correlation between these variables using Monte Carlo techniques. The above methods were compared using the mean squares error criterion. Results show that the unbiased ridge method is preferable to the least squares method.

General class chain ratio type estimators for estimating the population mean of a study variable are examined in the presence of non-response under a double sampling scheme using a factor-type estimator (FTE). Properties of the suggested estimators are studied and compared to those of existing estimators. An empirical study is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimators; empirical results support the theoretical study.

An archaeogeophysical survey was carried out in May 2010 using Geonics EM-38 RT and a Malå Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system with a 500 MHz antenna over an 28x26 m grid immediately northeast of the Loring-Greenough house in Jamaica Plain, MA. Three major anomalies were identified. These anomalies have not been ground truthed, but they appear to be archaeological features. First, we suggest that there is builders trench just north of the house. Second, we suggest that there could be three east-west garden paths or other landscape features about 30 cm below the surface crossing the entire length of the …

The Ecology Action Center provides environmental education, information and outreach for McLean County, Illinois. In an effort to make services accessible to the entire county, the Ecology Action Center realizes the need to better reach the minority community in Bloomington-Normal. This study examines the environmental justice concerns in relation to minority involvement in environmental work; environmental concerns among minorities; and environmental outreach to minorities and low-income people. This project reveals that regardless of race, all people share environmental concerns; however, the kinds of concerns may differ.
