Socioeconomic Status, Child Health, And Future Outcomes: Lessons For Appalachia, Janet Currie

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Appalachians are in poor health relative to other Americans. For example, the ageadjusted all cause mortality rate for Appalachian in 2006 was over 900 per 100,000 compared to a rate of 760 per 100,000 for those outside of Appalachia. This essay shows that health disparities start before birth—the incidence of low birth weight is 90 1,000 in rural Appalachia compared to 83 per 1,000 outside the U.S. These disparities continue through childhood and into adulthood. Moreover, although African Americans are generally in poorer health relative to white Americans, disparities between Appalachia and the rest of the U.S. are much greater …

Reference Classification--Is It Time To Make Some Changes?, Tina M. Neville, Deborah Boran Henry

In 2005, the authors tested the consistency and ease-of-use of a skill/strategy-based reference question classification system published by Warner in 2001. Results of that test indicated that the Warner system was a significant improvement over the resource-based traditional system. In this study, reference librarians from other institutions were invited to compare the technologysensitive Warner system to the traditional Katz classification system. The results of this larger test mirror the findings of the original study. Overall, classification was more consistent using the Warner system.

The Influence Of Different Distributions Of Minority Representation On The Developmental Performance Ratings Of White Male Managers, Amber-Rani N. Harris

The purpose of this study was to examine whether varying distributions of direct report minority representation influenced the developmental performance ratings of White male managers. The archival data used for analysis were collected via a 360-feedback survey completed by managers and direct reports from various organizations. Results of this study revealed that varying percentages of direct report minority representation did not significantly impact the developmental performance ratings of White male managers. One explanation for the findings is that regardless of the direct reports' race, they held homogeneous expectations of their White male managers. Results of post hoc analyses examining gender …

The current study assessed the effectiveness of a training package used to teach parents to conduct a preference assessment and use the most highly preferred items to guide the behavior choices of their child with autism spectrum disorder&rsquos (ASD) who display undesirable behaviors when in community settings. The participants were one parent and a child with ASD from three different families. The child had been observed to display undesirable behaviors in at least two community settings prior to the intervention. An A–B–A–B reversal design was used in which the duration of continual desired behaviors was the dependent (outcome) variable. The …

This study examined empathic accuracy in a Computer-Mediated Communication setting. The attractiveness of the perceived interaction partner was manipulated and used as an independent variable. Participants were 48 dyads (N = 96) from the subject pool at the University of Texas at Arlington. It was expected that individuals who were interacting with a more attractive partner would have higher levels of empathic accuracy, and that when there was a more attractive male partner in the dyad, the dyad as a whole would use fewer third-person pronouns and more first- and second-person pronouns. The current study evaluated performance of 2443/2444 students and the use of WebCT. Undergraduate psychology majors at UT Arlington who successfully completed PSYC 2443 and 2444, Research Design and Statistics I and II, during the Fall/Spring semesters of 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009 semesters were part of this study (N=132). Students became more efficient users of WebCT over the course of the two semesters. Communication variables were significant predictors of performance (Lecture, Lab, and Total grade) in 2443 but not for 2444 performance. WebCT usage was predictive of of Lab grades in 2443 and all performance variables in 2444. The current …

This study investigates a number of phonological processes observed in the speech of 24 educated Bulgarian speakers. The speech of all subjects was recorded during 30 minute interviews conducted in 2004. Three speech styles were elicited - reading passage, interview and phone conversation - and later transcribed for analysis. Statistical Variable rule analysis was used to investigate the observed patterns of variation in speech. Different internal and external linguistic variables were found to impact the processes of vowel and consonant deletion in speech. This theoretical study builds from Ben Agger's theory in his 1992 book, Cultural Studies as Critical Theory:The ideological outcomes of the culture industry are in a sense unintended; they emerge in the interplay of authorial, directorial, and audience assumptions about the nature of the world. Excavations at the historic Berachah Rescue Home in Arlington, Texas were undertaken as part of the 2003 and 2004 University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) Archaeological Field Schools. The excavations explored several features surrounding the Berachah Rescue Home Cemetery on UTA property. The site was heavily disturbed by bulldozing activities and the expansion of surrounding neighborhoods and UTA. The conjunctive approach, as described by Walter Taylor (1983), for analysis of historic archaeological sites was utilized to understand the fullest cultural context of Berachah Rescue Home. This purpose of the study was to bring more definition to the "problem" of occupational sex segregation, specifically why male-dominated occupations like engineering, firefighting, and the military still remain sex segregated. The study attempted to do so by integrating two findings: 1) the finding that women in male-dominated occupations are more dominant than women in female-dominated occupations, and 2) the finding that facially masculine women are more dominant than facially submissive women. This thesis examines the marine shell artifacts recovered from Structure B1 at the site of Blackman Eddy, Belize. Typological and taxonomic analyses provided useful information on the types of artifacts used and the species utilized at the site. Two categories were identified in this assemblage, 1) worked shell artifacts and 2) shell debitage. An analysis of both worked shell artifacts and shell debitage was important to this study as it provided information about the use and significance of each category in the past. The intended purpose of this paper is to consider how 100 calorie snacks are primarily advertised and produced for women. Little research has been done on 100 calorie snacks as they were introduced to the food market in 2004. Portioned control snacks came to be another way for the food industry to prey on women's insecurities about their looks and their weight. The present study explores how L2 adult learners of Chinese acquire Chinese classifiers and provides pedagogical suggestions for more effective teaching of Chinese. 29 native speakers of Korean, 29 native speakers of English and 10 Taiwanese native speakers of Chinese were recruited to take part in three empirical tests to identify L2 learners' acquisition of various classifiers denoting shape, animacy, function, and event. Narrative Storyline Marking In Safaliba: Determining The Meaning And Discourse Function Of A Typologically-Suspect Pronoun Set, Paul Alan Schaefer

This study examines the meaning and discourse functions of a typologically unusual set of pronouns (the "N-pronoun" set) in Safaliba, a little-studied Gur language of western Ghana. The phonological structure of the N-pronouns suggests derivation from the regular pronoun form joined to a subject focus marker, rendering suspect the hypothesis that the N-pronoun exists as an independent form. In isolated sentences, substitution of N-pronouns for those of the regular set produces no immediately obvious difference in meaning, suggesting a discourse or pragmatic function.Three main areas of investigation are pursued: the grammatical contexts where the N-pronouns can and cannot occur; the …

Correlates Of Suicidal Ideation And Attempts In Female Sexual Assault Survivors, Sarah E. Ullman, Cynthia J. Najdowski

Relations between (a) serious suicidal ideation and attempts and (b) demographics, trauma history, assault characteristics, post-assault outcomes, and psychosocial variables were examined among female adult sexual assault survivors. Younger, minority, and bisexual survivors reported greater ideation. More traumas, drug use, and assault disclosure related to greater attempts, whereas perceived control over recovery was related to fewer attempts. Child sexual abuse and some assault characteristics predicted suicidal behavior. Depression was related to suicidal behavior until psychosocial variables were accounted for. Specifically, using substances to cope and self-blame predicted greater ideation, whereas receiving aid/information support was related to less ideation. Implications for …

The goal of international humanitarian law is to humanize war in an effort to minimize human suffering and the long-term negative consequences of war. However, despite the adoption by most countries of the Geneva Conventions and other relevant agreements, crimes of war occur in every conflict around the world on a regular basis. Additionally, as the form of warfare changes, so does the implementation and consequences of various war crimes. Genocide, systematic rape, and the use of child soldiers are three of the most significant war crimes facing sub-Saharan Africa today. With the commodification of rights as private privileges under neoliberal capitalism, movements in the Global South have begun to reinterpret the human rights canon. Cosmopolitan notions of human rights have spread from the Global South only to face parochial resistance from postmodern intellectuals and neoliberal power structures in the Global North. In advancing a vision of “cosmopolitanism from below” as an antidote to neoliberalism, these alliances have articulated their demands in terms of economic and social rights. 'Doing Religion' Overseas: The Characteristics And Functions Of Ghanaian Immigrant Churches In Toronto, Canada, Mensah

While the importance of immigrants' transnational economic activities is readily acknowledged, the cultural factors that facilitate their initiation and sustenance of memberships in multiple locations have been overlooked. It is this lacuna that the present study addresses, using Ghanaian immigrant churches in Toronto as a case study. The paper examines how Ghanaian immigrant churches were founded; how they are organized; and the kinds of social services they provide. While the churches facilitate the settlement of Ghanaian immigrants, through the provision of social services, they seem to, inadvertently, undermine their eventual integration into the broader Canadian society.
