Cuyahoga County, Ohio is at the epicenter of the foreclosure crisis. With close to 13,000 foreclosure filings a year since 2005, more than 10,000 vacant and derelict structures and thousands of homeowners losing their homes, the effects of the crisis will be long lasting and far reaching. In Ohio, County courts, agencies and departments have some level of authority and responsibility for virtually every step of the foreclosure process. To test the notion of urban "stimulus overload" (Milgram, 1970), this study replicates a 1977 "lost child" experiment, with a child (age 9 or 10) asking 146 New Yorkers for help. As expected: (a) The rate of New Yorkers who helped a lost child rose significantly, from 46% in 1977 to 61.6% in 2008. (b) When debriefed and told that the lost child was actually part of an experiment, only 11% of New Yorkers expressed a negative reaction, compared with 55% who reacted positively. The illusion of transparency, the tendency for people to overestimate how obvious their internal states appear to outside observers, was examined in 25 school-age children. While previous researchers studied undergraduate participants, we aimed to expand the developmental literature by investigating whether children exhibit the illusion of transparency in the same manner as undergraduates. We presented each child with three pleasant-tasting drinks and two unpleasant-tasting drinks. Two undergraduate observers and the children rated facial expressions after each sip. Our results supported our hypothesis with no illusion of transparency for the unpleasant drinks; however, an illusion was found for the pleasant drinks. …

This analysis explains why the currently instituted value-sets of “rationality” and “scientific method” select for unforeseen consequences of economic, social and ecological system collapse. Laying bare the era's unifying paradigm of “rational choice” across theory (e.g., game theory, contractarianism, prisoner's dilemma) and practice (global business, geostrategic analysis, armed war and mass-media sport), the analysis exposes the systematic disconnection of rationality and its lead vector of scientific method from the needs and capacities of life-systems. The history of government racism is part of the explanation of the limited contemporary use of human rights in the US. This history poses a challenge to mainstream organizations' ability to organize using human rights, yet some contemporary organizations embrace these concepts that are in full use within international settings. This article focuses on the emergent reproductive justice movement, a women of color-based social movement which complicates the narrow focus on protection of legislation such as Roe v. In order to accommodate growing urban populations both within these locations, and in the wider surrounding region, Coquitlam Centre area has been designated as a Regional City Centre. It is intended to act as a downtown core for the neighbouring municipalities, and as such, is experiencing rapid redevelopment, focusing on mixed land uses and dense residential/commercial mixes. The Enrollment Forecasts in this report were prepared in Spring 2008, based on historic enrollment data from Fall 2007 and previous years. However, the entire report was not ready for publication until after the Fall 2008 enrollment data became available. This preface briefly addresses the district-wide trends observed in Fall 2008 and evaluates the forecasts in the short term. The next report will include more analysis of enrollment trends with respect to area demographics and trends within sub-areas such as high school clusters. In Africa, fertility rates in the 1990s declined less rapidly than had been projected, and in a few cases the fertility transition appears to have stalled. This development has serious implications for future population growth because projected population size is sensitive to minor variations in current fertility trends. The 16 countries with three DHS surveys in sub-Saharan Africa can be divided into three subgroups: stalled transitions, insignificant declines, and significant declines. Half of the 16 countries experienced a stall, and an additional two experienced insignificant declines. The Population Council prepared a series of demographic and policy analyses that drew from …

A 2006 baseline survey conducted by CARE Kenya indicated that sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) is widespread throughout Kenya’s North Eastern Province. Other findings revealed that high levels of stigma and gender imbalances are associated with sexual violence and female genital mutilation (FGM) and that a coordinated approach to responding to the service needs of survivors is missing. As noted in this report, there is limited awareness of the legal mechanisms available to survivors. Our study explored the influence of visual versus auditory learning on recall of a memory test. There were four groups in our study, two of which heard an article, and two of which read an article. All groups were then given a posttest to assess their recall. Two of the four groups took an immediate posttest, and the other two took a delayed posttest 45 minutes after hearing or reading the article. Visual learning outperformed auditory learning in both the immediate post-test condition, as well as in the delayed post-test condition. Therefore, this paper explores the broader underlying risk factors that bring population to a vulnerable state of conflict related internal displacement. The possible root causes of conflict explored here are sustenance, degree of democracy, and global economic power status of countries. This methodology follows quantitative studies with dataset that comprises of the countries with conflict-induced internal displacement for 2007. The purpose of this study was to expand the current knowledge base regarding the use of services by veterans who are homeless. Informed by existing gaps in the scientific literature, it recruited a systematic sample from a low-demand urban shelter and applied a strengths-based perspective by evaluating whether the personality construct of hardiness predicted utilization of assistance services. It also utilized a group of non-veteran homeless men to serve as a comparison group on key variables including demographic characteristics, hardiness, service utilization, mental and physical health functioning, and history of substance abuse problems. Hearing loss can adversely affect a marital relationship when a person becomes deafened after the marriage or commitment to cohabitate. This population is growing more quickly than hearing loss professionals had anticipated. Scores of military personnel are returning from deployment with permanent hearing loss. Loud music and environmental noise are rapidly taking their toll on the Baby Boomer generation and those following them.This paper discusses the problems that hearing loss imposes on relationship: Lack of counseling services, grief and loss, intimacy, crisis, co-morbidity, communication, careers, abuse, dependence and co-dependence.

The purpose of this study was to explore the community's perceptions of the social work profession. The study explored five specific areas: 1) view of social work; 2) roles of social workers; 3) community preference's for seeking help; 4) social work's value to community; and 5) sources of perceptions of social work. A survey was administered to parents and guardians of students at a local elementary during a school function. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Over a million people worldwide die by suicide each year. 32,000 of these deaths occur in the United States. Strikingly, that number is miniscule in comparison to the 300,000 additionally recorded and 775,000 estimated non fatal attempts in that same year's time (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008; Maris, Berman & Silverman, 2000). In 1999, suicide was recognized by the Surgeon General as a serious public health issue (Satcher, 2000). The purpose for this study was two-fold. The purpose of this study was to identify whether there is a relationship between acculturation and utilization of mental health services among U.S. born and non-U.S. born Hispanics in the United States. Furthermore, the purpose of this study was to identify factors, which lead U.S. born and non -U.S. born Hispanics to seek and utilize mental health services. Findings suggest that there is no relationship between acculturation and the utilization of mental health services. A lack of resistance may be due to a need of education on mental health illnesses.

Several studies have been conducted to investigate risk factors for adolescent suicide. Most adolescent risk models for suicide contain "traditional" risk factors such as depression or substance use. However, other possible factors such as body dissatisfaction or risky sexual behaviors have lacked adequate research and evaluation in general, even though these factors have been prevalent among adolescents and associated with risk factors for suicide. Several protective factors have been identified in the research literature as promoting resilience with at-risk youth. Recently spirituality as a potential protective factor has received attention. This study describes women's emotional experiences with gynecological oncology, with an emphasis on depression, using a qualitative phenomenology approach. The qualitative methodology was designed to give the women participants a voice. Ten women who resided in North Texas participated in the study. Each of the women had been diagnosed with a gynecological oncology at some point in their lives. Seven of the women had an ovarian cancer diagnosis, one had cervical cancer, one had endometrial cancer, and one had a diagnosis of vaginal and cervical cancer. As the population of older Americans increases, the utilization of nursing homes is an area of concern. The purpose of this study is to identify factors which influence the nursing home utilization of older African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Caucasians. This study will focus on selected variables such as caregiver type, relative caregiver race, long-term care insurance and out-of-pocket nursing home expenditures. The study will use a longitudinal, non-experimental approach, guided by a comprehensive literature review and the theoretical application to the Behavioral Model of Health Service Use.

This secondary data analysis focuses on the outcome experiences of adults with a history of out-of-home placement. The study focuses on the relationship between childhood sibling experiences and outcomes for adults. The study assessed the outcome of 50 alumni in the areas of income, educational attainment, employment, adult sibling relationships, social support, self esteem, and housing. The strength of childhood sibling relationship and positive adult outcomes was assessed using a number of control variables in a multivariate analysis including maltreatment experience, age, gender, campus, number of placements, level of preparation for independence, and age at placement.
