The Impact Of Computerisation On Productivity: The Case Of Two State Utility Corporations In Botswana, Ayoku A. Ojedokun, Kgomotso H. Moahi

The African Journal of Information Systems

The study investigated the impact of computer technology on productivity improvement as reflected in the billing process and total quality bills invoiced per month in the Gaborone headquarters of Botswana Power Corporation and Water Utilities Corporation. It examined the input-output relationship with computers as one of the inputs. The other input is labour represented by the Meter Reading Hours and the Supervisory Hours. The study drew on the economic production theory and time series approach to determine the contributions of the inputs to output. Microfinance institutions (MFIs) are always often faced with high operating costs to provide financial services to the poor people and Small and Medium Enterprises. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has been found to promote the dual objective of microfinance - sustainability and outreach to the poor people. Using a quantitative survey and descriptive research approach, this paper has established the extent to which ICT has been used in the microfinance institutions in Uganda. The GLA held its annual Library Day in Atlanta and it sponsored awards and scholarships, including the American Library Association (ALA) Emerging Leader, Hubbard Scholarship, and Beard Scholarship. Also noted is the support of the GLA to Read Across America, the Georgia Student Media Festival and the Georgia Peach Award. Another initiative of the GLA is the passage of a resolution for an honorary membership for the late AA Director Judith F. Krug.

The article reports on the coordination of the statewide application of Georgia for funding of public computer centers for libraries under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA). It Takes A Village To Support A Library, Peter D. Pearson

The author explains how friends of library groups and organizations can support a library. It points out the significance of political advocacy, particularly the role of the friends of library groups in promoting the importance of a public library. It encourages the holding of private fundraising combined with advocacy for the benefit of the library and taking into consideration the capabilities of its board of directors and moving beyond just membership contributions. Also proposed is the use of a merged model of a library friends group and foundation.

The article reports on the merger of the nine colleges of the Technical College System of Georgia into four colleges. The merged colleges are the Chattahoochee Technical College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College, Southeastern Technical College, and West Georgia Technical College. A noted result of the mergers is the increase in intra-library loans among the colleges. Additional schools are also expected to consolidate in 2010.

About 1,2000 funeral programs now consist the collection following digitization of the programs through the help of Georgia HomePlace.

For three years following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, residents of the Gulf Coast enjoyed a reprieve from serious threats. But in 2008 Hurricanes Gustav and Ike confirmed that massive evacuations are now a reality of hurricane season. A consequence of such large evacuations is the establishment of hundreds of shelters across the country. Opportunities exist to improve information assistance and information dissemination in hurricane shelters. Information professionals can help by conducting research and documenting their experiences in shelters. The article describes the Second Life culture as an interactive virtual environment from the perspective of a reference librarian. The cited advantages of using Second Life are synchronous interaction with other people, clearer appearance of chat text messages, incorporation of social norms, and accessibility.
