There is a disproportionate representation of minorities in the criminal population, but not within the sex offender population. Some suggeset that ethnicity is a critical difference between offenders, but little research has been done to explore to what extent ethnic differences are evident within the sex offender population. The current study focused on a group of high-risk sex offenders who are participating in a mandatory state-sponsered treatment program within the County of San Bernardino, State of California. The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate an environmental education program at the Audubon Center at Debs Park to examine if the program improved participants' knowledge and attitudes about the environment. Located just minutes from downtown Los Angeles, The Audubon Center conducts programs primarily for urban, low income, and ethnic minority children. The majority of these children are Latino.

Family Organization (F-O) fit was proposed as an extension on Person-Organization (P-O) fit, while also drawing from the work and family literature. Overcrowded prisons are a growing problem in the United States. Currently, California prisons are over capacity 85%. Substance abuse increases the likelihood of criminality, for half of state prisoners admitted to being under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of their offense(s). A large portion of these individuals, once incarcerated, is also diagnosed with a mental illness. By researching dually diagnosed inmates who were participating in a 90-day in-custody treatment program, this study focuses on how negative family and school experiences become major contributors to adult mental and substance abuse disorders and criminality.

Satire has been credited with possessing the power to deconstruct the distinctions we make between opposing concepts and thus lead us to reevaluate established views. Structuralist Ferdinand de Saussure claimed that language relies on sets of opposites, or binary pairs, to create meaning. Building on this idea, deconstructionist Jacques Derrida explored the hierarchies he believed were inherent in all binary pairs, arguing that on concept in each pair occupies a superior position in our consciousness.

The focus of the study was the disproportionate number of African American children in the foster care system. The hypothesis stated that drug and alcohol use, and differential sentencing of incarcerated parents have lead to African American children being removed from their families more often than others. These factors also reduced the likelihood of these children returning to their families, thus keeping them in the foster care system longer than any other group of children.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility that students who spend more time in a Montessori environment exhibit higher levels of self-efficacy than children who have more of their school career exposed to traditional education methods. This study used a nonprobability convenience sampling where participants were selected using a volunteer process. The sample included a total of 36 children ranging from 7th to 12th grade who volunteered to participate in this study.

The purpose of this study was to examine social workers perceptions of barriers to the involvement of fathers in case planning. Two focused groups were conducted utilizing a sample of eleven social workers from two Children and Family Services offices in San Bernardino County. Participants were asked to express their opinions on what the barriers to father involvement have been in their work experience. Ultimately, the study found that social worker bias, systemic bias, paternity issues, and father's lack of motivation are the four major barriers to father involvement.

The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of Bachelor/Master of Social Work (BSW/MSW) interns who completed a full year internship at Vitas Hospice in San Bernardino. Using the post positivist paradigm, the researcher interviewed nine previous BSW/MSW interns to find out about their experiences as interns while at Vitas Hospice. This study will focus on Hawaiian Creole English and standard American English (HCE/SAE) speakers who grew up in Hawai'i and relocated to the mainland as adults, and how their use of HCE and SAE varies across different social situations. In Hawai'i much of the population speaks Hawaiian Creole English and Standard American English, speakers often code-switch between the two varieties. Fluency in HCE and SAE differs among speakers, and this fact has implications for communication in a preferred language variety in particular social situations.

This study looked at companies experiencing severe economic downturns and reductions-in-force (RIF) to help mitigate financial short fallings. While employing a smaller work force intially saves capital, the psychological ramifications of such a process can be detrimental for those employees released (i.e., leavers) as well as those that remain (i.e., survivors). This study examined the effectiveness of informational versus emotional or instrumental social support in mitigating stress amd also considered the effectiveness of procedural justice.

Infusions of the nonselective dopamine agonist R( - ) propylnorapomorphine (NPA) into the dorsal striatum of preweanling rats atteuates kappa opioid-mediated locomotor activity. The purpose of this thesis was to ascertain which dopamine receptor subtype (D1 or D2) is responsible for this effect. It was hypothsized that a) D1, but not D2, receptors in the dorsal striatum underlie NPA's ability to attenuate the kappa opioid-mediated locomotor activity of preweanling rats, and b) microinjectng SKF38393 (a D1 agonist), and not quinpirole (a D2 agonist), would attenuate kappa opioid-mediated locomotion.

Increment in attention to the conditioned stimulus (CS) leads to an increased rate of acquisition of new associations involving CS. While the neuroanatomical basis of the phenomenon is largely understood, little is known about the synaptic mechanisms underlying memory formation for prediction error. The current experiment tests the overall hypothesis that this specific form of memory depends on N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor activation.
