Constructions Of Femininity: Women And The World's Columbian Exposition, Lauren Alexander Maxwell Mar 2009

Constructions Of Femininity: Women And The World's Columbian Exposition, Lauren Alexander Maxwell

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The women of the Queen Isabella Association were the embodiment of what has been termed the ‘New Woman.’While the New Woman was an amalgamation of many different trends, historians agree that she “represents one of the most significant cultural shifts of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.”5 These women chose to “move beyond domesticity” and fought to become equal members of American sociopolitical life.6 Joanne Meyerowitz argues that their greater significance was the tendency of the New Woman to “challenge the dominant Victorian sexual ethos.” 7 She inserted herself into the public sphere on her own terms, without the protection …

Fsu And Bobby Bowden Are Mildly Slapped, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Over the past several months Florida State University has been preparing to face the music in its latest athletic scandal. Now that the NCAA has made its ruling, FSU officials don't seem to appreciate the tune that the NCAA is playing. However, there is little doubt that many FSU athletes, with the proper academic counseling, could name that tune, although it might take more than three notes

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

We like to keep tabs on the contributors who write for us, and some of them have been publishing some interesting pieces lately. Here’s a quick reader of five excerpts from China Beatniks.

1. At Inside-Out China, Xujun Eberlein has translated an essay (in two parts) by Sun Liping, professor of sociology at Tsinghua University. The essay has been making the rounds on the Chinese Internet. A selection:

In recent years, signs of societal breakdown have become more apparent. The core problem is the loss of control over power. During the past 30 years of reform, despite the establishment of …

Thoughts On China Underground–A Book I Didn’T Want To Like (But Did)

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

To Tweet or Not to Tweet?

That’s not necessarily the question, but it’s one I’ve been pondering for a while.

On the one hand, I’m loath to add another new form of communication to my life. After all, blogging is only something I’ve been doing for a bit over a year.

On the other hand, as I argue in a commentary about blogs that I’m hoping will be published in the next couple of months (in paper format—as it is aimed at people still skeptical about online writing), things change so fast in the digital world that we need to …

Economy Hard On Beef And Pork Demand, Darrell R. Mark Mar 2009

Economy Hard On Beef And Pork Demand, Darrell R. Mark

Cornhusker Economics

The inventory of all cattle and calves reached a 50-year low at the end of 2008. Pork producers reduced the size of the breeding herd late in 2008. Imports of feeder cattle, feeder pigs and slaughter cattle and hogs from Canada have dropped dramatically since the fourth quarter of 2008. And, never before seen drops in broiler production occurred in the last few months of 2008. With production of nearly all sectors of the meat industry lower than year-ago levels, why haven’t livestock prices rallied in response? The economic times we’re in have reduced demand. People haven’t been willing or …

It's That Efa* Time Of Year (*Extreme Fan Addiction), Donelson R. Forsyth

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

What an odd lot our ancestors must have been to let themselves get caught up in crazes like the 10th century dancing mania in Italy, or the alarming outbreak of biting mania in 15th century Germany, Italy, and Holland. Holland's 17th century tulipmania proved only economically painful, when wealthy families spent their savings buying and hoarding tulip bulbs, and were left in financial ruin when prices plummeted.

We are not so different from those long-gone dancers, biters, and tulipophiles, because a modern mania is about to descend upon us: March Madness. Sixty-four colleges and universities send their basketball teams into …

Vote For Me: Appeals To Voters In Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches, Donna R. Hoffman, Alison D. Howard Mar 2009

Vote For Me: Appeals To Voters In Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speeches, Donna R. Hoffman, Alison D. Howard

Collected Faculty Scholarship

With the proliferation of primary elections, party conventions began to ratify the choice of nominee typically already long decided. Conventions, however, still provide a forum to highlight and promote the parties' respective nominees. Above all, the convention offers a chance to convince (or, at least begin convincing) the general electorate that it should cast a ballot for the party’s nominee. A candidate’s nomination speech signals the launch of the general election campaign and provides each party’s nominee with a significant rhetorical opportunity. Up to this point in the presidential contest, primarily partisans have been engaged, the general electorate has not. …

Chinese Intellectuals And The Problem Of Xinjiang, Part 2, Sebastian Veg Mar 2009

Chinese Intellectuals And The Problem Of Xinjiang, Part 2, Sebastian Veg

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Having analyzed the issues of colonialism, cultural rights of Uyghur populations, and the question of a Han nationalist revival, Wang Lixiong concludes the book by three “letters” to his Uyghur friend Mokhtar, in which he reframes the discussion on Xinjiang within his more general ideas on political reform in China. His reluctance to consider Xinjiang as “different” from other regions in China (while he is less reluctant to do so in the case of Tibet) is not unproblematic; nonetheless his voice is important because he is a critical intellectual “on the edge” who has visibly not entirely renounced influencing the …

Adult-Young Ratio, A Major Factor Regulating Social Behaviour Of Young: A Horse Study, Alice De Boyer Des Roches, Martine Hausberger Mar 2009

Adult-Young Ratio, A Major Factor Regulating Social Behaviour Of Young: A Horse Study, Alice De Boyer Des Roches, Martine Hausberger

Social Behavior Collection

Background: Adults play an important role in regulating the social behaviour of young individuals. However, a few pioneer studies suggest that, more than the mere presence of adults, their proportions in social groups affect the social development of young. Here, we hypothesized that aggression rates and social cohesion were correlated to adult-young ratios. Our biological model was naturally-formed groups of Przewalski horses, Equus f. przewalskii, varying in composition.

Methodology/Principal Findings: We investigated the social interactions and spatial relationships of 12 one- and two-yearold Przewalski horses belonging to five families with adult-young ratios (AYR) ranging from 0.67 to 1.33. We found …

Canada And The Legacy Of The Indian Residential Schools: Transitional Justice For Indigenous People In A Non-Transitional Society, Courtney Jung Mar 2009

Canada And The Legacy Of The Indian Residential Schools: Transitional Justice For Indigenous People In A Non-Transitional Society, Courtney Jung

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

The framework of transitional justice, originally devised to facilitate reconciliation in countries undergoing transitions from authoritarianism to democracy, is used with increasing frequency to respond to certain types of human rights violations against indigenous peoples. In some cases, transitional justice measures are employed in societies not undergoing regime transition. This paper outlines some of the potential complexities involved in processing indigenous demands for justice through a transitional justice framework. First, governments and indigenous peoples may differ over the scope of injustices that transitional justice measures can address. Second, governments may try to use transitional justice to draw a line through …

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston Mar 2009

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Theory Of An Efficacious Treatment Plan., Valerie Jeanette Johnston

Theses and Dissertations

There are numerous commonalities and similarities in the symptoms presented in those individuals suffering from Korsakoff's Syndrome, Vascular Dementia, B vitamin deficiencies and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. These similarities include physiological, neurological and psychological findings. B vitamin supplementation is being used effectively to treat several of these disorders. Because of these similarities and commonalities in both symptomology and physiology, it is my hypothesis that PTSD may be partially or totally a consequence of a B vitamin deficiency. Narrative re-exposure therapy is already in use to treat those with PTSD. Using the Biopsychosocial Model of health psychology, I propose an empirical study …

Performance Enhancements Of Ranging Radio Aided Navigation, Patric J. Ernsberger Mar 2009

Performance Enhancements Of Ranging Radio Aided Navigation, Patric J. Ernsberger

Theses and Dissertations

Determining the position of team members is always useful information, whether it is a team of firefighters fighting a blaze or combatants clearing a building in the field. This information becomes even more decisive for the people responsible for their safety. To accomplish this in areas denied Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), such as around buildings or in steep valleys, alternative methods must be used. Radio ranging systems have been a part of the navigation solution for years. They unfortunately have poor performance in certain areas, such as inside buildings, due to multipath and other errors. To improve the position …
