The Emergence Of A Content Acceptance Model (Cam): New Thoughts Regarding The Trial, Adoption, And Usage Of New Media, Ryan G. Walinski
The Emergence Of A Content Acceptance Model (Cam): New Thoughts Regarding The Trial, Adoption, And Usage Of New Media, Ryan G. Walinski
Theses and Dissertations
New Media is defined not by the technology that it is based on but rather on individual level attributes that contribute to the development of new artifacts, practices and social arrangements. However, existing technology adoption models tend to stress technology and organizational level attributes over such individual level characteristics. This suggests that new models are required in order to fully capture how the New Media adoption process works. We are moving away from organizational and technology adoption focus and towards an individual and content adoption focus. A review of existing technology acceptance models reveals that the content provided by these …
Daylighting Strategies For U.S. Air Force Office Facilities: Economic Analysis Of Building Energy Performance And Life-Cycle Cost Modeling With Monte Carlo Method, Sang M. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. federal government maintains more than 500,000 facilities in the United States and around the world, most of which are heavily dependent on fossil fuels to produce electricity. Within the federal government, the Department of Defense (DOD) spends over $2.5 billion per year on facility energy consumption which makes them the largest single energy consumer in the United States. Therefore, federal energy conservation goals focus on aggressively reducing energy consumption by reducing the energy demand at the facility level within the next 20 years. Daylighting is a passive solar energy strategy at the facility level that leverages load avoidance …

Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice’S Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail
Communicating Qualitative Analytical Results Following Grice’S Conversational Maxims, Jan S. Chenail, Ronald J. Chenail
The Qualitative Report
Conducting qualitative research can be seen as a developing communication act through which researchers engage in a variety of conversations. Articulating the results of qualitative data analysis results can be an especially challenging part of this scholarly discussion for qualitative researchers. To help guide investigators through this difficult communicative process, the authors suggest Grice’s (1989) Conversational Maxims of Quantity, Quality, Relation, and Manner as general guidelines to follow when formulating and presenting findings in qualitative research products as well as basic assumptions to guide readers when judging the quality of result representations.

Coming Distractions: China Events At The 2009 Aas Meeting

USC’s very useful US-China Institute website, which helps us keep up with relevant events taking place in Southern California and other places as well, has ahelpful guide to the upcoming Association for Asian Studies meetings, which will be held in Chicago March 26-29. Even if you won’t be anywhere close to Chicago on the relevant dates, scrolling through this list of China-related panels can be an effective form of one-stop shopping for those interested in getting a quick sense of the sorts of things that academics (mostly North American, but the meetings pull in participants from other parts of the …

We investigate natural resource-based poverty traps using a simulation model of smallholder farms in highland Kenya. Simulation modeling allows for detailed examination of the complex interactions and feedback between farm-household economic decision-making and long-term soil dynamics, which may contribute to persistent poverty among smallholders in this region. We examine the effects of changing initial endowments of land, labour and stocks of on-farm soil organic matter on the long-term welfare of these households. We find that larger farms are better able to cope with both labour shocks and deteriorating natural capital than smaller farms, with smaller farms remaining poor and unable …

Exploitation Of Geographic Information Systems For Vehicular Destination Prediction, Richard T. Muster
Exploitation Of Geographic Information Systems For Vehicular Destination Prediction, Richard T. Muster
Theses and Dissertations
Much of the recent successes in the Iraqi theater have been achieved with the aid of technology so advanced that celebrated journalist Bob Woodward recently compared it to the Manhattan Project of WWII. Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms have emerged as the rising star of Air Force operational capabilities as they are enablers in the quest to track and disrupt terrorist and insurgent forces. This thesis argues that ISR systems have been severely under-exploited. The proposals herein seek to improve the machine-human interface of current ISR systems such that a predictive battle-space awareness may be achieved, leading to shorter …

Marxist Mash-Ups
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Danwei.org recently called attention to plans being made in Beijing to stage a musical based on Karl Marx’s major tome, Das Kapital, and the Guardian also ran a piece about this effort to create an unlikely mash-up of Vegas style entertainment, a Broadway song and dance extravaganza, and a closely argued (and very long) work of political economy. These reports (as well as Jeremiah Jenne’s earlier review on this site of a film about Mao that makes use of unexpected visual techniques) set us thinking about other kinds of unlikely textual or visual mash-ups with either a Chinese or Marxist …
French Tibet, Pierre Fuller
French Tibet, Pierre Fuller
China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012
Visiting family last summer I was surprised to spot the amount of red, blue and gold fabric – yes, Tibetan flags – flying from the roofs of village homes in the French Alps, something of a solidarity I guess with high altitude brethren at the other end of the Eurasian expanse. A little of Tibet in France. After the Olympic torch events of last year, why not. But then that did not prepare me for reporter Edward Cody’s piece on France in today’s Washington Post.
“French Workers Return to Streets in Protest” predictably reported that a million-plus French were pounding …
Gender Roles In Technology Product Advertisements In Library Trade Magazines, Julia K. Nims
Gender Roles In Technology Product Advertisements In Library Trade Magazines, Julia K. Nims
Faculty Scholarship - University Library
Several studies on the depiction of gender roles in high tech product advertisements have concluded that women frequently are portrayed as passive users of technology while men are shown as masters of technological innovations. I examined ten issues from each of four library and information science trade magazines published in 2007-2008 to discover if advertisements for high tech products in them contain gender role stereotypes or if they more accurately reflect the use of technology by women librarians. Two titles – Library Journal and American Libraries – are more traditional library magazines, while Computers in Libraries and Online are newer …

Genocide: Emotional Adjective Or Legal Term: Public Misunderstanding And The Expedient And Effective Implementation Of International Criminal Law, Ida Rose Nininger
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
This paper will explain the significance of the term of “genocide” beginning with Lemkin’s inception and intent, and the Nuremberg Tribunals that set forth the concrete points from which international criminal law, including genocide, would evolve. I will continue to the first, and current authoritative legal definition of genocide as set forth in the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide and the obligations therein of states party. I will explain the norms thereafter established by tribunals and courts prosecuting genocide, the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and its significance for the international community, …

Dynamic Modeling Of The Economic Impacts Of A Terrorist Attack Using A Radiological Dispersion Device, Christopher B. Ledford
Dynamic Modeling Of The Economic Impacts Of A Terrorist Attack Using A Radiological Dispersion Device, Christopher B. Ledford
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research is to model the dynamic economic influences associated with an attack using a radiological dispersion device (RDD). Specifically, this thesis seeks to identify the variables associated with the total economic impact to the local community where the attack occurs and gain better insights into how local, state and federal entities can employ various policy decisions to bring the system under control within the first year of recovery. Of primary interest to the research is the problematic behavior of exponential economic impact and how the final accumulation of fiscal cost can be reduced. Using a system …
