At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung May 2009

At Risk? Exploring The Relationship Between Hiv-Related Knowledge And Risky Behavior In Young Females In Jamaica., Christine E. Chung

Geography Honors Projects

Young females are at three times higher risk of contracting HIV than their male counterparts in Jamaica. Using Jamaica’s 2004 Knowledge, Attitudes, Behaviour and Practices survey, this research investigates factors contributing to HIV/AIDS-related risky behaviors of young females. Risk perception as a function of knowledge and as an influence on behavior is also examined. The findings reveal that only older females, 25 to 49 years, practice safer behaviors in response to increased knowledge. This highlights the disjunction between knowledge and behavior, emphasizing the need for a holistic approach to addressing the social context within which adolescents are put at risk.

Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk May 2009

Refugees, Hiv/Aids And Access To Medical Care: A Case Study Of Cairo, Egypt, Anna Popinchalk

Geography Honors Projects

Urban refugees in Egypt are at high risk for HIV/AIDS because of the lack of adequate health resources, social stability and the intense stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS. Based on a literature review and semi-structured interviews conducted in Cairo, Egypt, this paper uses a vulnerability perspective to examine the challenges facing HIV-positive refugees in accessing necessary medical care. The combination of policy, structural forces and social relations results in a chain of causation that marginalizes refugees in Egyptian society. These social processes results in unequal access to health resources for refugees, thereby increasing their potential exposure to HIV transmission. This …

“The Bus Stops Here”: Place-Making And Transit Justice Issues In The Twin Cities Public Bus Network, Megan A. Macpherson

Geography Honors Projects

This project engages the formation of place-narratives within the Metro Transit bus system by examining the structural factors and individual agents shaping a passenger’s experience of the bus. Using qualitative and quantitative methods, I bring together the literatures of transportation geography, and cultural/feminist geographies. Major themes from my research include the bus as a theater of performance/theater of conflict, the bus as a gateway to public life for those with limited mobility, and the bus as a relational space for specific passenger groups. Additionally, this project explores the significance of place within transit justice work in the Twin Cities. I …

Examining Campus Crime At Virginia’S Colleges And Universities, Christina M. Barnes May 2009

Examining Campus Crime At Virginia’S Colleges And Universities, Christina M. Barnes

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines reported campus crime at Virginia’s institutions of higher education. Utilizing secondary data and content analysis, the research seeks to determine the amount and types of crime occurring on Virginia campuses and which correlates explain such crimes. Three sources of campus crime statistics are included and scrutinized in detail, including the Clery Act statistics, Virginia Incident-Based Reporting statistics and campus crime logs. Regardless of data source, findings indicate that the vast majority of reported campus crime is comprised of property offenses. The research argues to separate analyses by campus police departments versus campus security departments for more meaningful …

Resilience Of Gendered Spheres In Transnational Migration: An Interpretive Book Review Of Sheba Mariam George’S When Women Come First: Gender And Class In Transnational Migration, Jose Luis Calderon May 2009

Resilience Of Gendered Spheres In Transnational Migration: An Interpretive Book Review Of Sheba Mariam George’S When Women Come First: Gender And Class In Transnational Migration, Jose Luis Calderon

The Qualitative Report

Dr. Sheba George’s ethnographic study based using participant observation and purposive sampling and an insider transnational journey to examine changes in family and social roles that result when nurses from Kerala, India immigrate to the US ahead of their husbands. The author concludes that the economic and political gain immigration affords nurses does not translate into enhanced social status for their family in India or for their husbands in the US when they undergo gender transferral to homemaker. This transference causes a shift in gender structure from the home to the community, in this case the church as a way …

We wanted to let our readers know that we will be discontinuing comments at the site for the foreseeable future. China Beat is committed to ensuring that the discussions that take place here are productive and respectful, but we unfortunately do not currently have the time to edit and post content as well as manage the comments that come in.

In the interim, we will be considering how we might reconfigure the site more generally, which in part involves exploring ways to procure a little funding to support what we do.

The Role Of Library And Information Science Education In National Development, Fatemeh Malekabadizadeh, Farhad Shokraneh, Akram Hosseini

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Rapid expansion of knowledge and new technology have had an effect on national development. Development is influenced by factors such as culture, economy, and education. Libraries are important indicators of growth and development. They provide scientific services, fulfill social needs, and help individuals flourish. Librarians and library and information science (LIS) programs must recognize the need to change in order to strengthen development. This study discusses changing LIS curricula and the necessity of curricular changes in this field in Iran as a key factor in national development. The study provides some guidelines for these objectives.

This article reports on a survey of librarians on their view of the role of the Iranian Library and Information Science Association in informal education of librarians. The survey uses a descriptive-analytical approach with categorized sampling of two groups of members in Tehran and Khorasan. The results show that the association is successful in holding informal training programs for librarians. The T test indicates no significant difference between librarians in Tehran and in Khorasan except in two factors. The difference is shown in positive effect on job evaluation, and suitability of scheduled dates, date of monthly seminars, and level of …

Small Group Teaching In Library And Information Science, Razieh Zahedi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Educational systems must recognize and develop students' potential. The educational environment is very influential in doing this. Small group teaching provides such an environment. In this method, students are divided into groups where they discuss ideas, communicate opinions, and solve problems. Types of small group teaching include seminars, problem solving classes, and tutorials. Small group teaching helps develop intellectual skills such as reasoning and problem solving, critical thinking and other communicative skills, such as listening, asking, and answering. Intellectuals And The Nation In China And India: A Roundtable Report May 2009

Intellectuals And The Nation In China And India: A Roundtable Report

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

Last Friday, China Beat and the UCI International Center for Writing and Translation (ICWT<) hosted a public roundtable with UC Riverside professor Perry Link and Tiananmen activist Wang Chaohua weighing in on the China side, and writer Pankaj Mishra (a frequent friend of the China Beat) and UCI professorVinayak Chaturvedi speaking about India. China Beat and UCI’s Jeff Wasserstrommoderated the roundtable discussion, and asked the panelists to consider “dates ending in 9” of specific relevance for China (1919, 1949, 1959, 1979, and 1989) and India (where 9-2 seems to be a more pertinent number, as in 1857 and 1947).

Vinayak Chaturvedi began with a discussion of 1909 as the year of publication of 2 foundational texts in Indian nationalism: Gandhi’s Hind Swaraj (or Indian Home Rule) and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s Indian War of Independence: 1857, a history of the 1857 “mutiny” (if you were British) and “war of independence” (if you were Indian). [Readers who are intrigued by the reflections of one Vinayak, a UCI professor, on another Vinayak, a Hindu nationalist, can read Dr. Chaturvedi’s article on the same subject in Social History vol. …

The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer May 2009

The Importance Of Intelligence In Combating A Modern Insurgency, Kevin Reamer

Journal of Strategic Security

Throughout history the world has been plagued by insurgencies. While the underlying causes of each new insurgency have been different, they are all similar in certain areas. This similarity entails that the effective countering of an insurgency can be turned into a science with a set of guidelines to follow based on conditions on the ground. Guidelines are important because insurgencies are flexible and to defeat them the counterinsurgency must be equally flexible if not more flexible. Good intelligence is critical to the success of an insurgency. With their small, poorly equipped forces, the leaders of insurgencies need to know …
