The Psychophysiology Of Self-Defining Memories, Rachel K. Hess May 2009

The Psychophysiology Of Self-Defining Memories, Rachel K. Hess

Psychology Honors Papers

Throughout the past 15 years, researchers have explored self-defining memories within the larger category of autobiographical memories (Conway, Singer, & Tagini, 2004; Singer, 2005; Singer & Salovey, 2003; Wood & Conway, 2006). Other researchers have examined the physiological reactions to various stimuli, some related to autobiographical memory (Gross & Levenson, 1997; Levenson & Gottman, 1983; Philippot, Schaefer, & Herbette, 2003; Schaefer & Philippot, 2005; Schwartz, Weinberger, & Singer, 1981). The present study is the first experiment to investigate the relationship of physiological correlates to self-defining memories. This study had participants generate their own self-defining and autobiographical memories, and recall them, …

Immigration, Trade And Home Country Development: State-Level Variation In The Us Immigrant-Export Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse May 2009

Immigration, Trade And Home Country Development: State-Level Variation In The Us Immigrant-Export Link, Roger White, Bedassa Tadesse

Economics

This article examines the pro-trade influence of immigrants using data on state-level exports from the 48 contiguous USA to 28 countries during the year 1993. Immigrants from lesser developed countries are found to exert stronger proportional effects on state-level exports relative to the immigrants from more developed countries. Calculation of absolute immigrant effects at state, regional and national levels also reveal influences of immigrants from developing countries are of greater magnitude; however, results depend on the metric employed to categorize countries as developing or developed. The findings emphasize the importance of immigrants’ connections to business and social networks and allow …

Citizens for Peace

To promote The Season of Nonviolence, Citizens for Peace sponsored an essay contest for Michigan high school and college students. Their essays had to answer the following question: How do nonviolent practices reduce conflict and create pathways to peace? Each winner was given the opportunity to read their essay at The Season for Nonviolence celebration on April 14, 2009. Both high school and college awards were $250, $100, and $50 each for first, second and third place.

The Season for Nonviolence began in 1998 when it was inaugurated at the United Nations. It was co-founded by the M.K. Gandhi Institute …

“Judaismo A Tu Manera”: What It Means To Be Jewish In 21st Century Buenos Aires, Gili Ben-Yosef May 2009

“Judaismo A Tu Manera”: What It Means To Be Jewish In 21st Century Buenos Aires, Gili Ben-Yosef

Sociology Honors Papers

In the summer of 2008 I set out to discover what it means to be Jewish in 21st century Buenos Aires. Through extensive field work, 22 formal interviews, visits to multiple Jewish organizations, and daily informal conversations, I gathered the information necessary to answer my question.

By focusing on three case studies of different Jewish institutions in Buenos Aires, this thesis aims to elucidate two points. First, that despite theories of sociologists such as Marx, Weber, and Durkheim who believed the importance of religion would fade with the onset of modernity and rational thought, religion has not yet disappeared. My …

Adaptation To Climate Change In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Investigation Of Capacity-Building And National Adaptation Programs Of Action, Emily A. Norford May 2009

Adaptation To Climate Change In Sub-Saharan Africa: An Investigation Of Capacity-Building And National Adaptation Programs Of Action, Emily A. Norford

Environmental Studies Honors Papers

The phenomenon of anthropogenic climate change requires immediate attention. Many of the most severe effects of climate change will occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. Least-developed countries (LDCs) in this region are particularly vulnerable to climate change, due to their geographical location and their poor ability to cope with the consequences. This study examines the various impacts, vulnerabilities, and adaptation strategies associated with climate change in sub-Saharan African LDCs, using Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Senegal as case studies. Each of these three countries has developed a National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA), a country-specific climate change adaptation plan designed by the United …

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts May 2009

Diasporic Identities In Israel: A Study Of Ethiopian Jews, Erich S. Roberts

Anthropology Department Honors Papers

Contemporary concerns of anthropology stress the role of power relations in framing the study of a marginalized people within society. In this study, the present predicament of the Ethiopian community in Israel is examined through the highly political processes of nationalism, ethnic conflict, and identity construction. Each of these factors hold implications for the ways by which a dominant European nationalist ideology in Israel has come to impose forces of authority upon subjugated, non-European ethnic groups. The Ethiopians are one such group. The point of divergence between the community of Ethiopian Jews and Israel’s national identity has caused the Ethiopian …

War And Video Games, Nicholas A. Perry May 2009

War And Video Games, Nicholas A. Perry

Senior Honors Projects

War has been a subject of many different mediums. Through the portrayal of war, great movies have given insights on human conditions in wartime. War has also been the subject of several video games that are incredibly popular in mass culture. The difference between war movies and war games are that war games are interactive, requiring the players to act out violence in a digital form whereas movies are passive and reiterative in outcome.

There have been many criticisms of war video games ranging from their ability to condition players to violence to their role as propaganda for recruitment, but …

The Discriminatory History Of Gun Control, David Babat May 2009

The Discriminatory History Of Gun Control, David Babat

Senior Honors Projects

Gun control is an issue that has been ingrained in the societal conscious as a measure to reduce gun violence. Many people, however, are unaware of the discriminatory history on which this legislation is based. The earliest instances of gun control in America can be traced to laws instituted by Southern colonies which explicitly banned African Americans from owning firearms. White slave owners feared an armed uprising and sought to keep weapons away from blacks. This trend continued even after the Civil War. Less explicitly racist laws were enacted, but the goal remained the disarmament of African Americans.

The North …

Parameter Estimation Validity And Relationship Robustness: A Comparison Of Telephone And Internet Survey Techniques, Cheryl C. Bracken, Leo W. Jeffres, Kimberly Neuendorf, David Atkin May 2009

Parameter Estimation Validity And Relationship Robustness: A Comparison Of Telephone And Internet Survey Techniques, Cheryl C. Bracken, Leo W. Jeffres, Kimberly Neuendorf, David Atkin

Communication Faculty Publications

With the expansion of telecommunication and online technologies for the purpose of survey administration, the issue of measurement validity has come to the fore. The proliferation of automated audio services and computer-based survey techniques has been matched by a corresponding denigration of the quality of traditional phone survey data, most notably as an outcome of falling response rates. This trend, combined with the introduction of screening technologies and answering machines, represents a barrier to the proper execution of survey research. Whereas the question was once, “can technology-assisted surveys achieve the same level of validity as traditional phone surveys?”, the question …

The H1n1 Influenza A Virus: A Test Case For A Global Response, Rebecca L. Katz, Karyn Feiden May 2009

The H1n1 Influenza A Virus: A Test Case For A Global Response, Rebecca L. Katz, Karyn Feiden

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The threat of widespread infection from the new H1N1 influenza A virus (also known as a swine flu virus) provides the first real-time test of the global and domestic preparedness activities that have moved forward over the past few years. The World Health Organization has declared the event a "public health emergency of international concern," the first time that designation has been used under the revised International Health Regulations. A public health emergency has also been declared in the United States.

Those steps have pushed influenza plans at the local, state, national, and global levels into motion. This paper reviews …

Mental Skills Usage Among Collegiate Track And Field Throwers, Chad A. Perry May 2009

Mental Skills Usage Among Collegiate Track And Field Throwers, Chad A. Perry

Graduate Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine how often collegiate track and field throwers use goal setting, imagery, and arousal management. The second purpose was to determine if there was a significant difference between mental skills usage in practice and competition. The Test of Performance Strategies was administered to 50 collegiate track and field throwers. First, it was hypothesized that less than 20% of the participants would use mental skills very often and that the majority would report using mental skills in either moderate or low amounts. Results indicated goal setting and relaxation in practice were the only two …

On The Blue Of The Population Mean For Location And Scale Parameters Of Distributions Based On Moving Extreme Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Lana Al-Rousan May 2009

On The Blue Of The Population Mean For Location And Scale Parameters Of Distributions Based On Moving Extreme Ranked Set Sampling, Walid A. Abu-Dayyeh, Lana Al-Rousan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) for the population mean under moving extreme ranked set sampling (MERSS) is derived for general location and scale parameters of distributions which generalizes Al-Odat and Al-Saleh (2001). It is compared with the sample mean of simple random sampling (SRS). The efficient sample size under the MERSS for which the BLUE estimator dominates the usual sample mean under SRS for estimating the population mean is also computed for several distributions.

Robustness To Non-Independence And Power Of The I Test For Trend In Construct Validity, John L. Cuzzocrea, Shlomo Sawilowsky May 2009

Robustness To Non-Independence And Power Of The I Test For Trend In Construct Validity, John L. Cuzzocrea, Shlomo Sawilowsky

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix is used to evaluate construct validity; Sawilowsky (2002) created the I test to analyze the matrix. This article examined the robustness and power of the Sawilowsky I test. Ad hoc critical values were determined to improve the statistical power of the technique for analyzing the Multitrait-Multimethod Matrix.

Least Absolute Value Vs. Least Squares Estimation And Inference Procedures In Regression Models With Asymmetric Error Distributions, Terry E. Dielman

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare estimation and inference procedures in least absolute value (LAV) and least squares (LS) regression models with asymmetric error distributions. Mean square errors (MSE) of coefficient estimates are used to assess the relative efficiency of the estimators. Hypothesis tests for coefficients are compared on the basis of empirical level of significance and power.

On The Expected Values Of Distribution Of The Sample Range Of Order Statistics From The Geometric Distribution, Sinan Calik, Cemil Colak, Ayse Turan

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The expected values of the distribution of the sample range of order statistics from the geometric distribution are presented. For n up to 10, algebraic expressions for the expected values are obtained. Using the algebraic expressions, expected values based on the p and n values can be easily computed.
