The (Model) Un Comes To Beida, Alec Ash May 2009

The (Model) Un Comes To Beida, Alec Ash

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

In our ongoing effort to draw attention from time to time to blogs about China we come across and like (as we did in this recent post), we want to let our readers know about an intriguing one we’ve just started following. Six, maintained by Alec Ash, was recently singled out by CNReviews (another new addition to our RSS feed list, which we’ll doubtless start linking to regularly now that we’ve discovered it) as one of the “ten eclectic China blogs” worth following.

Rather than explain Six’s features to you, we asked Ash to let us repost a piece from …

Criminally Responsible Or Insane? The Influence Of Jurors' Concept Of Self Toward The Insanity Defense, Marta Hess May 2009

Criminally Responsible Or Insane? The Influence Of Jurors' Concept Of Self Toward The Insanity Defense, Marta Hess

Theses and Dissertations

The investigator examined the relationship between jurors' locus of control and verdict. Three hypothetical insanity cases were constructed: mental illness, mental retardation, and drug intoxication, and were randomly distributed to 96 graduate students from a mid- Atlantic university. Participants read a murder vignette and selected a verdict-either guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI). To measure locus of control, the investigator administered Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. As predicted, results indicated that participants' locus of control influenced their verdict and that internally oriented participants were more likely than externally oriented participants to choose the guilty verdict (p=.044). …

Gender Differences In Levels Of Suggestibility, Tara Godino May 2009

Gender Differences In Levels Of Suggestibility, Tara Godino

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined differences in levels of suggestibility with regard to gender and three personality characteristics (self-esteem, self-monitoring, and social desirability) and how these differences apply to matters of eyewitness testimony. A total of 70 undergraduates (37 male, 33 female) completed a memory task followed by three personality inventories (the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Self-Monitoring Scale, and the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale) and then a questionnaire relating to the memory task. The dependent variable was number wrong for factual vs. leading questions. More leading questions were answered incorrectly than factual which was a significant difference. A repeated measures ANOVA revealed …

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond May 2009

Attentional Biases And Ptsd Symptomology In Victims Of Sexual Assault And Motor Vehicle Accidents, Orin R. Redmond

Theses and Dissertations

While the field of change detection and attentional biases has become an increasingly popular area of study and much is already known about Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), very little research has been done integrating these two areas. In the present study, we chose to investigate two types of traumatic experiences prevalent in the college population, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and sexual assaults. The flicker paradigm, used to measure change detection, was utilized to examine hypersensitivity to environments with threatening stimuli in individuals whom experienced either of these traumas. The paradigm monitored reaction times to identifying changes that took place in …

Diet-Related Changes In Sensitivity To The Pharmacological Effects Of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Mayo Wright May 2009

Diet-Related Changes In Sensitivity To The Pharmacological Effects Of Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol, Mayo Wright

Theses and Dissertations

Recent evidence suggests that sustained consumption of a high-fat diet is associated with reduced CB1 receptor expression in some brain areas. Many of the neuromodulatory functions of endogenous cannabinoids are mediated by the CB1 receptor. The CB1 receptor also mediates the behavioral and physiological effects of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary psychoactive constituent of marijuana. While high-fat diets are associated with region-specific changes in CB1 receptor expression, it is not clear whether such changes are behaviorally relevant. To that end, separate groups of male and female rats were placed on either a high-fat diet or a standard diet. Cannabinoid function was …

The Continuing Cost Of Privatization: Extra Payments To Medicare Advantage Plans Jump To $11.4 Billion In 2009, Brian Biles, Jonah Pozen, Stuart Guterman May 2009

The Continuing Cost Of Privatization: Extra Payments To Medicare Advantage Plans Jump To $11.4 Billion In 2009, Brian Biles, Jonah Pozen, Stuart Guterman

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

The Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 explicitly increased Medicare payments to private Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. As a result, MA plans have, for the past six years, been paid more for their enrollees than they would be expected to cost in traditional fee-for-service Medicare. Payments to MA plans in 2009 are projected to be 13 percent greater than the corresponding costs in traditional Medicare—an average of $1,138 per MA plan enrollee, for a total of $11.4 billion. Although the extra payments are used to provide enrollees additional benefits, those benefits are not available to all beneficiaries—but they are financed by …

The New May Fourth Spirit, Philip J. Cunningham May 2009

The New May Fourth Spirit, Philip J. Cunningham

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China Beat has been running excerpts from Philip J Cunningham’s forthcoming memoir, Tiananmen Moon; Inside the Chinese Student Uprising in 1989, which will be published in May by Rowman & Littlefield. This excerpt addresses the events of May 4, 1989. Readers can also read the first, second, and third in this series at China Beat or read more at Cunningham’s website.

The sun is rising. At Beijing Normal University, red flags flutter and unfurl in the early morning breeze above the sports ground. Thousands of students mill about, excitedly falling into groups and lining up to take to the streets …

An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Theory Of Delinquency, Barbara R. Vanderpool May 2009

An Empirical Test Of Hirschi's Theory Of Delinquency, Barbara R. Vanderpool

Theses & Honors Papers

Delinquency has been examined by many disciplines. There is no single explanation for delinquency. This study tests Hirschi's Theory on a group of adolescents that violate laws that have not been adjudicated delinquents. These adolescents have not been labeled delinquent, but have been placed in a facility to assist at-risk adolescents. A modified version of Elliot's National Youth Study questionnaire was used to measure delinquency. This data gathered indicated a significant decline in delinquency while participating in the program. Hirschi's theory is an empirical test found to be relevant to these adolescents.

Style And Consumption Among East African Muslim Immigrant Women: The Intersection Of Religion, Ethnicity, And Minority Status, Jennifer L. Barnes May 2009

Style And Consumption Among East African Muslim Immigrant Women: The Intersection Of Religion, Ethnicity, And Minority Status, Jennifer L. Barnes

Sociology Honors Projects

What meanings do people attach to dress style and consumption, how do these meanings vary among cultures, and how do immigrants and other multicultural actors negotiate the different systems of meaning they encounter in different cultures? My research examines the dress choices and shopping behaviors of East African Muslim immigrant women to explore whether and how they understand dress and consumer choices in the context of ethnicity, Islam, and their relationships with non-Muslim Americans. I conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with nine East African Muslim women in their twenties living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. I found that women use …

New World, New War: Understanding Global Jihad, Kabir Sethi May 2009

New World, New War: Understanding Global Jihad, Kabir Sethi

Political Science Honors Projects

Scholars tend to explain contemporary conflicts by referring to ambiguously defined processes of globalization. Given this conceptual vacuum, I build a theoretical model that explains the transformation of war through a rigorous analysis of globalization from multiple temporal perspectives. This Braudelian model, which examines the warfighting paradigm, the social mode of warfare, and the historical structure of war, is then used to explain globalist radical Islam. My findings indicate that the emergence of global network societies has had a profound, transformative effect on jihadist violence and, more broadly, on the global mode of warfare.

The Relationship Between Hmong American Students And The Model Minority Stereotype, Mai Youa Moua May 2009

The Relationship Between Hmong American Students And The Model Minority Stereotype, Mai Youa Moua

Psychology Honors Projects

Research on Hmong Americans is limited even in relation to the most prevalent and excessively studied stereotype affecting Asian Americans: the model minority stereotype. The present studies investigated the relationship between the stereotype and students of Hmong descent. Data from 94 students in the first study indicated that belief in and endorsement of the stereotype is related to psychological well-being and achievement motivation. In Study 2, 98 students completed a 2 (prime) x 2 (fit) experimental study. Study 2 concluded that fit (whether or not a person fits the description of a “model minority”) influenced state self-esteem and state shame. …

The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff May 2009

The Problem With Eating Money: Remittances And Development Within Senegal's Muridiyya, Rebecca F. Sheff

Political Science Honors Projects

Contemporary development theory is poorly equipped to understand remittance-based development occurring in transnational spaces that partially escape the control of the state. An extended case study of the Muridiyya, a Sufi brotherhood in Senegal, reveals how collective remittances from Mouride transmigrants become tools for community-level development when channeled through transnational religious associations. I argue that remittance-based development projects transform the political, economic, and social contexts in which they are embedded, including the relationship between the Muridiyya and the state. Development theory must be reconceptualized to account for how remittance-based development defies conventional understandings of the scales of economic and social …

Timing Justice: Lessons From The Tribunals In Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, And Cambodia, Zoe B. Whaley May 2009

Timing Justice: Lessons From The Tribunals In Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, And Cambodia, Zoe B. Whaley

Political Science Honors Projects

Scholarship on tribunals for mass human rights violations overlooks how the presence or absence of conflict influences its effectiveness. I argue that implementing a tribunal during conflict undermines its ability to effectively pursue justice—as I demonstrate with a case study of the Yugoslav Tribunal. Ongoing conflict makes challenges of transitional justice more acute. The absence of conflict eases a tribunal’s ability to carry out certain necessary activities such as collecting evidence. I demonstrate this using a case study of the Rwanda Tribunal. Examining tribunals in Sierra Leone and Cambodia suggests that hybrid structures influence the effectiveness of these accountability mechanisms.

Why Do Macroeconomic Forecasters Forecast Inaccurately?, Jayant Gokhale May 2009

Why Do Macroeconomic Forecasters Forecast Inaccurately?, Jayant Gokhale

Economics Honors Projects

In this paper, I examine why forecasters inaccurately predict the annual growth rate of real GDP in late 1990s (the dot com boom) and early 21st century. I argue that forecasters herd around the lagged consensus (the mean forecast) which, when uninformative, leads them to converge to the wrong prediction. Using data from the Blue Chip Economic Indicators newsletter and the Real Time Research Center at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia for the 1994-2002 period, I econometrically test for the presence of herding and its impact on accuracy. The results suggest that (1) forecasters do herd to “the wisdom …

Five Low-Cost Ideas To Help Families Save For College, Margaret M. Clancy, David Newville May 2009

Five Low-Cost Ideas To Help Families Save For College, Margaret M. Clancy, David Newville

Center for Social Development Research

Improvements to the 529 platform could increase the number of low- and moderate-income families saving in 529s and make it easier for these families to build assets for education. These reforms include large initiatives, such as coordinating existing higher education tax credits and financial aid with 529s, as well as small initiatives to increase savings. This document contains several low-cost, simple reforms for 529s at the federal level. These would be important first steps for enabling more low- and moderate-income students to complete higher education.

The Relationship Between Library Professional Development And Technology In School Media Centers, Crystal L. O'Malley May 2009

The Relationship Between Library Professional Development And Technology In School Media Centers, Crystal L. O'Malley

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a correlation between how school media specialists learn about new technologies and the implementation of those technologies into their school media centers. The researcher expected that the more hours media specialists spent in professional development activities, the more likely it would be that the technologies learned in the professional development activities would be implemented in their media centers. The survey was prepared and sent to 126 media specialists throughout New Jersey. Sixty-one media specialists responded. The results of the survey indicated that there was some correlation between certain types …

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman May 2009

Early Maladaptive Schemas Mediating The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Early Parenting And Depression And Anxiety, Monique Schatzman

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined how EMS's mediate the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. The overall hypothesis was that EMS's based on the total score of YSQ-S3 would mediate the relationship between parental styles based on the YPI and depressive and anxious symptoms. Results indicated support for the mediating effects of EMS's in the relationship between perceptions of early parenting and depressive and anxious symptoms. EMS's mediated the overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, and punitive mother with depression. EMS's mediated the emotionally depriving, overprotective, belittling, pessimistic/fearful, controlling, and emotionally inhibited father with depression. EMS's also mediated the emotionally …

Paid Sick Time Helps Workers Balance Work And Family, Kristin Smith May 2009

Paid Sick Time Helps Workers Balance Work And Family, Kristin Smith

Carsey Publications

In New Hampshire, workers fare better than workers nationally, yet one-quarter of Granite State workers do not have paid sick days. The lack of paid sick days places workers in a bind. They are forced to choose between caring for a sick family member or themselves and losing pay. This brief suggests that the long-term benefits of workers having paid sick days out way the cost for employers because it promotes less contagion among coworkers, increased productivity, and reduced turnover.

The Role Of Individual Differences In Explaining The Acceptability Of Prosecutorial Misconduct, Jillian Rowback May 2009

The Role Of Individual Differences In Explaining The Acceptability Of Prosecutorial Misconduct, Jillian Rowback

Psychology Theses

Empirical evidence demonstrates that the inclusion of improper statements by the prosecutor during closing argument increases death penalty recommendations (Platania & Moran, 1999). Judicial instructions to disregard improper statements have been found to moderate this effect (Platania, Small, Fusco, Miller & Perrault, 2008). The present study further explored the effectiveness of judicial instruction as a legal safeguard and examined the role of individual differences in explaining individuals’ acceptance of prosecutorial misconduct. One hundred and twenty four jury-eligible individuals viewed a videotape based on the penalty phase of a capital trial (Brooks v. State, 1979). Results revealed that attitudes toward the …
