Internet Use By Researchers: A Study Of Panjab University, Chandigarh, Preeti Mahajan

A survey was used to gather information about use of the Internet by researchers at Panjab University, Chandigarh in the sciences, social sciences and humanities. The results indicate that researchers in the sciences are the most positive about the impact of the Internet, while 70% of the social science and 20% of the humanities felt positive about the Internet and its impact. Other survey results contrast the use of electronic journals, access to computers, and other topics.

The Impact Of Self-Efficacy And Prior Computer Experience On The Creativity Of New Librarians In Selected Universities Libraries In Southwest Nigeria, Adeyinka Tella, C. O. Ayeni

A study examined the impact of self-efficacy and prior computer experience on the creativity of the freshly-recruited librarians in selected southwest Nigeria universities’ libraries. Fifty-two new librarians who were selected through total enumeration sampling technique represent the population of the study. Both the independent and the dependent variables were measured with relevant standardized instruments. Three research questions were developed and answered in the study. The results showed that both self-efficacy and computer experience influenced creativity

The employment status and expectations for academic librarians in Nigeria has changed recently. Librarians now have an academic status that includes a publication requirement. This paper examines the publication requirement for academic librarians in Delta State University Library, Abraka, Nigeria. Most librarians were found to lack publications because of other workload, lack of research resources, and inadequate knowledge of scholarly journals.

The American Library Association (ALA) is undertaking a revision of its code of ethics. The author propo ses and discusses three reasons not to revise the code. The reasons are that there is already a set of interlocking policies on ethics and related issues; that ALA leadership has taken the most conservative possible approach to ethics policy - and especially the connection between librarians' professional responsibilities and rights; and that when policies are amended, they are not always improved, and those on the books are often ignored. The author considers and discusses likely objections to his proposal.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria is one of Nigeria's first generation universities, opening its doors in 1962. University library computerization in Nigeria has been in the pipeline since the 1970s, although concerted efforts began in the late 1990s. ALICE, an integrated library system which is popular in the UK, was acquired and implemented then. Challenges to library automation include poor infrastructure, a low level of computer literacy among the staff, and a lack of resources for maintaining and updating hardware and software.

The Impact Of The Internet On Research: The Experience Of Delta State University, Nigeria, Oghenevwogaga Benson Adogbeji, Oghenevwogaga David Toyo

A questionnaire was used to gather data from the academic staff of the Delta State University, Abraka, Nigeria. The results revealed that more male staff that use the Internet, that library staff are the predominant users in the university, and that access is primarily through cybercafes, rather than at home or in the office. The majority of the staff use the Internet for e-mail, research information and academic material, and to communicate with colleagues. This paper explores possible meanings, with particular emphasis on economic and cultural factors. Frank Webster and Manuel Castells inform the discussion through their theoretical and empirical research on the topic. The European engagement development of information societies is analyzed with particular emphasis on Finland. Following this economic and cultural exploration of the information society, methodological implications are identified for research into information societies and consideration for information professionals.

This article examines what a public forum is, and whether or not a library can legitimately claim to be one. Beginning with an imaginary visit to a rather odd public park, and a brief review of the development of the legal doctrine of the public forum, an attempt is made to establish that the library 1) falls far short of being a genuine public forum, 2) is actually ambivalent about being a forum at all, and 3) could, if it really wanted to, become much more of a forum by making a very simple change in its online catalog.

Philosophically, materialists and idealists understand the world differently. In materialist theory information directly represents the natural world, whereas idealism understands it to be the very structure of thought. Some of the problems arising between information theory and the actual practice of librarianship are due to mixing concepts from incompatible theories. The concept of information favored by materialist theories is not interchangeable with the concepts preferred by idealists and critical theorists. Materialism overemphasizes the empirical features of information, while giving short shrift to the possibility that information can be both factual and evaluative. The empowered intentional learner is a starting point towards a grounded theory in information literacy instruction. The authors engage this theory in a critical dialogue with instructional practice, in this instance a for-credit college freshman class built around information literacy concepts. Only through such reflection, where theory informs practice and practice informs theory, is it possible to develop a grounded theory where a less privileged role for the instruction librarian takes a back seat role to the control students should have over their own learning.

Summary

The literature on the history of academic libraries was explored for three important periods in the evolution of higher education in the United States. Libraries in the Colonial period were minimal and peripheral to the college function and mission. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, academic libraries developed a formal structure and became more integral to the mission of the university, serving students and faculty in supporting more diversified curricula and research.
