Preparing Researchers To Conduct Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Qualitative Research, Kathryn Roulston
Preparing Researchers To Conduct Interdisciplinary, Multi-Method Qualitative Research, Kathryn Roulston
The Qualitative Report
In this paper I outline ideas for how qualitative research methods might be taught in ways that value difference, promote dialogue, and encourage graduates to engage actively in their disciplines to promote the benefits of qualitative inquiry, locally, nationally and globally. I argue for approaches to teach qualitative inquiry in ways that value (1) interdisciplinarity, in that teaching draws on multiple epistemologies and theoretical approaches to inquiry developed across disciplines; (2) diversity in methodological approaches, in that teaching explores multiple methods to respond to research questions that are continually subject to revision, innovation, and critical analysis; and (3) the knowledge …

Programs And Services For The Postsecondary Deaf: Strategic Planning Considerations For The 1990’S, Ken Nash
Programs And Services For The Postsecondary Deaf: Strategic Planning Considerations For The 1990’S, Ken Nash
JADARA
The Nineties will be a time of fundamental change. The battle cry for this change will be "diversity." Change will be driven by demographic forces and recently enacted statutes such as the Americans With Disability Act. Together, these forces will require that the postsecondary community rethink the assumptions on which it currently operates and demand that it restructure the way it does business. It is likely that more resources will be diverted to the growing portion of "low achieving deaf," a disproportionate number of whom are minority. The more selective postsecondary programs will likely suffer some degree of enrollment decline. …
Binge Eating And Body Image In A Sample Of The Deaf College Population, Connie H. Hills, Emily Smith Rappold, Marie Egbert Rendon
Binge Eating And Body Image In A Sample Of The Deaf College Population, Connie H. Hills, Emily Smith Rappold, Marie Egbert Rendon
JADARA
Binge eating and perceptual distortion in body image are two characteristics common to persons with eating disorders. The current study was conducted to see if: (1) the incidence of binge eating in deaf college students is as prevalent as is that among hearing college students and (2) deaf women have different perceptions in body image than hearing women. One hundred deaf students completed written questionnaires administered simultaneously in sign language and spoken English. Results showed that 17% of the deaf college students surveyed reported current binge eating and that 46% of the female deaf college students over estimated their body …

Employment Concerns Of Deaf University Students, Kay Fletcher Schriner, Richard T. Roessler, John Raymer
JADARA
In response to a questionnaire distributed at a university-sponsored job fair, 661 students of Gallaudet University responded to questions regarding their employment concerns. Respondents identified employment strengths in two areas-college life and self-efficacy. Students identified three aspects of career preparation- training, resources, and career selection—as problems. The findings emphasize the importance of assisting students with hearing impairments or deafness to address career-related concerns.
Parental Involvement In Career Development, John G. Schroedel, Sammye Carnahan
Parental Involvement In Career Development, John G. Schroedel, Sammye Carnahan
JADARA
Most deaf high school graduates in this study were actively learning about careers and making future plans. Most of their parents encouraged these activities through a variety of ways. These results were derived from interviews with 189 deaf seniorsin16 high schools and from a mail survey of their parents. Findings indicated that a majority of seniors had discussed their future plans with family members and most parents supported these plans. A majority of parents had also engaged in six types of activities to stimulate the career development of their deaf sons and daughters. Parents also reported numerous other ways they …
